Swimsuit shopping

Last time I went out swimsuit shopping was about 2 years ago...I'd lost a lot
of weight and my old swimsuit hung on me; I was desperate to have something I
could take on vacation with me. I hadn't finished losing my weight, but I was
very close. Finally, after much searching, I found a suit that fit well
enough...and I was happy enough with it.

But it didn't fit quite right, there was too much waist in the waist and length
in the length...especially last time I'd put it on, since I'd continued
shrinking. So today, I was near the swimsuit shop I favor, and I dropped in. I
looked around, didn't find anything I liked (I'm proportionally more "chested"
than I am "hip and waisted," plus I'm short)...but for a change, I asked a
sales person for help. She found me a swimsuit to try on...and it was perfect.
Still not the ultra-sexy look I favor in my wildest imagination, but a perfect
fit. And as it turned out, it was the same brand as my previous one, only one
"dress" size smaller.

Irony? Even though my weight is a little up than it's been, it's still down
since that last swimsuit I settled for, apparently. There's a part of me very
pleased to have dropped a swimsuit size. And I'm even more pleased to actually
own a swimsuit -- even if it's nothing fancy -- that fits PERFECTLY on me ...
and I believe, looks very good on me. Finally, I won't feel like cringing when
I'm walking around in a swimsuit.

Future dream? To find a tankini that would cover the tummy and fit the chest.
But it's not a practical style for someone like me, and I'm not holding my
breath. On the other hand, from what I saw today, one's options change (no
matter what one's proportions may be) when one drops into more standard (i.e.,
smaller) sizes. It was a lot of work to get where I am, but it was worth it to
me...and for me, it's worth the struggle to lose the few pounds I need to lose
and stay the course. If nothing else than: I feel better now. Healthier,
happier, more self-confident...better dressed. You know a weird thing? Only
since I've lost weight have I worn makeup.

A wish for myself: May I be able to stick to my plan enough this summer to get
back to where I want to be...and to then stay there.

Good stuff, Beeswing!  I may have to try a shop sometime with
salespeople who can help.  I'm also hard to fit -- also a bit bigger
on top, and quite long-waisted.  Tankinis -- the sort where you buy
the parts separately -- sound like a good solution for people with a
top/bottom size disparity, but all the tops are too short for me, so I
end up with 3" or so of tummy showing between the top and the bottom
-- especially because all the bottoms are low-rise, it seems.  This is
NOT a good look for someone with a wrinkly tummy, nor what I consider
particularly age-appropriate for someone who's 56 :-).

Thanks, Chris!

The top of the tankini I tried on came far enough down that the bottom of the
top met with the top of the bottoms, if that makes sense. Remember, I'm short,
so that gives me an advantage since I want coverage in length. I have a wrinkly
tummy, too, and wouldn't be caught dead showing it!

My trouble is actually in the top department...it's next to impossible to find
a tankini top that would support a...um...fuller figure. I liked the look of
the one I tried on, but it was a size or two too big all over, and when I
leaned over...well, let me say I had a "wardrobe malfunction." They didn't have
any other sizes in that suit, but I don't think a smaller suit would have
covered my front up adequately.

So, I don't see tankinis in my future any time soon. With any luck, the tankini
fad will pass quickly so I can stop resenting not being able to wear one! :)

I hear you... I have forever been searching for the perfect tankini.  But
unless I'm willing to a) sacrifice design AND b) sacrifice my wallet this is
not possible for me.  So, this year I gave up and attempted the bikini and
actually found that they DO make bikini tops that fit those us that are a
little more endowed WITHOUT looking like a tramp in the process!  I'm not
worried about having not having washboard abs - however, I have lost about
90% of my gut and am not afraid to show it really.

Hey, if any of you were out shopping for suits last summer, I was the one
constantly slamming change room doors and walking off in a huff while
throwing 6 or 7 suits at the attendants - I only did that twice this year.

Who needs washboard abs?! Congrats on your weight loss, and I hope you enjoy
that bikini. You've earned it.

Unfortunately, for me, a bikini is totally out. I won't show my tummy; it's
pretty much been ruined, between having had a baby and then my weight gain and
loss. So if I bought any kind of two-piece, it would pretty much have to be a
tankini.

That was you?! Wow, I didn't realize that at the time! :)

Congrats on finding a style you like!

I always hated shopping for a swimsuit until I found a style I liked a few
years ago.  Thankfully it's a popular style with Jantzen and they have kept
it around for several years.  I just buy it in another color every few
years<g>  This year I have the red one - I've also had it in brown and blue
over the past few years.  I would still have the brown one but I left it
somewhere on vacation a couple years ago.  It helps to control the slight
tummy bulge.

That's a great-looking suit! The first swimsuit I bought that I ever genuinely
liked was a Jantzen. In some ways, I still consider that the perfect suit,
though long ago I shrunk out of it and for that matter, I'd pretty much worn it
to death. I wouldn't mind finding another one just like it, only in the size I
am now.

My last two suits (the one I just bought and the one that preceded it) were
made by Roxanne. What's nice about them, for me, is that I can buy them by bra
size. Since the top is my tough-to-fit area, it's worked out great for me.

I know that one can buy some Janzten styles by bra size, too, but I've only
seen the styles I happen to like on line. I'm not quite brave enough to buy a
swimsuit without trying in on first!

Thanks for writing.

Try Lands End....they sell swim suit seperates also different torso lengths.
I know it is a pain to do the return thing when you shop by catalog, but
they offer so many styles and the seperate thing, with some really cute
options, is wonderful.  I just ordered a new suit yesterday....hopefully it
comes soon and is as wonderful as I hope!

I looked and was pleasantly surprised to find a tankini in their Overstocks
section that I liked and would likely fit me! I've already bought a swimsuit
I'm happy with, so I'm not going to get it. But it gives me an idea of where to
look "next time." Thanks!

I've looked at their separates and considered them, but I haven't
noticed the tankini tops coming in different torso lengths.  I'll have
to check more carefully.  I do like their one-piece suits, and their
D-cup, long torso cut is perfect on me.  Unfortunately, only a few of
the suits come with both those options.

I'm looking forward to seeing your new suit :-).

Do you mean that the Land's End ones specifically do not?  The ones I
have tried in stores most definitely bare my midriff.  I'm not
particularly tall, but I have a quite long torso.  If the Land's End
ones are longer, they might be worth checking out; I do like their
stuff.
