There's a Curves opening in July near me!

I don't know how they'll do.  For example, they are one small parking lot
away from the city fitness center where I can get probably a cheaper
membership -- if it costs me anything.  For another, this town was built
with large blocks to encourage people to walk.  I regularly walk to get
groceries with my personal two-wheeled cart.  For an even better example, I
discovered the Curves while walking to the post office to mail bill
payments.  Oh well, we'll see.

Curves normally caters to women who dislike or are too self-conscious to
work out at a typical fitness facility.

It's a good thing it's a small place then (it used to be a bank) because
there's not enough parking for a lot of women to get there without getting
out in public.  Like I said, the parking lot is small and they have to share
it with a shopping center, the City offices, and the city fitness center.

So? If having a *safe* place to work out, gets people to work out,
what's wrong with that?

Most beginning divers don't go off the high platform either.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with it at all.  AAMF, I was a member
for 2 years before moving on to a full service gym.  I was only trying to
point out that there is definitely a market for the facility in spite of
other options available in the area.

Sorry if my statement offended you.

OK, I hear you! It's just that my sister-in-law started with Curves
and really made great progress. And she's *really* obese. But it got
her started. I think her local Curves closed, and she's at a regular
gym now.

So yes, you are right, there is indeed a market.

I don't understand this statement.  Are regular fitness centers
located in demilitarized zones?

Let us know how you like it. I decided to look for an actual gym
(when I can afford it), because I can see getting bored at Curves;
it's just the same routine every time, even though the time spent
on each machine is short...

Really?  News to me.  I wasn't going to sign up because I understand the
workouts are half an hour long -- correct me if I'm wrong -- and I'm
shooting for full hours.  It's a comfortable length for me, I always feel
well stretched at the end, and it's the new Surgeon General recommendation.

IIRC (it's been a while since I checked out our local Curves), you're
right, it's half an hour -- use one machine, move to a platform where
you jog in place, move to another machine, etc. I'd get bored with that
pretty quickly.

That's not to say that I'm putting down Curves -- I'm all for any
healthy exercise program that gets people moving. I just don't think
it's for me.

I don't belong to a gym, yet, but I'm with you in that 1/2 an hour
seems too short. I usually walk for 35-40 minute stretches, and I'm
still pretty heavy -- I hope to be able to do a lot more as I get
thinner...
