Body Fat Breakthrough!

OK, a couple years ago, I bought a Tanita scale for more accuracy in
weighing. It also has the body fat measuring bit... which I know is
not really very accurate, but I figured it was useful to see
upward/downward trends.

Well.... back in 11/2002... it was reading me as high as 56%. (Mind
you, these readings are morning readings... the instructions suggest
an evening reading when the body is properly hydrated is better... but
I'm too lazy to weigh twice a day.)

I don't often log the number, just everyso once in a while in
Lifeform. But since I bought the scale, I have NEVER seen anything
under 50%. Though the trend to 2004 has indeed been downward,
thankfully.

Until today.

Today, I stepped on this morning and it read 49%!!!!!

So maybe something IS happening from going to the gym and working out.
Last month, it was reading 51%. Of course, the reading I got this
morning may not hold... but it was really encouraging to see!

It shocked me! But in a good way. And I feel way motivated!

This is great progress, Cynthia!  Congratulations and keep up the good
work.

Thanks! The number itself is depressing, but so much better than where
I was two years ago!

Back at the gym later today!

Good for you!

If you want to compare your Tanita's body fat estimate using another method,
check this link:

http://www.he.net/%7Ezone/prothd2.html

It uses the so-called "Navy Method" for estimating body fat percentage, and
only requires some simple body circumference measurements.

Thanks, I may try that. I know the Tanita is not supposed to be that
accurate with BF%. Like I said, I got it more for a "monitoring the
trends" kind of thing.

I'm half scared to know where I really am, though with luck, probably
less than what the Tanita says. Only I know I float really, really
well...

WTG!  This is certainly progress in the right direction.

I have a Tanita and I was surprised to see that the measurements at home and
at the gym are very close.  I'm due for a checkup at the gym tomorrow.  I'll
see if the gym workouts and the bike riding are getting me headed in a
downward mode.

I'm not so sure I want to hear that... if I really am 49% BF, that's
pretty bad. But it wouldn't necessarily surprise me. OTOH... better
49% than my previous 56%.

Today was a so-so workout, my arms were really tired, so I decided to
just leave them be until Saturday. Some days, I just know better than
to push them. It's a huge struggle to gain strength in my arms and
very slow.

But I did work my legs extra hard. They seem to show more improvement
quicker.

I already had a little episode where I hurt my arms on one machine and
had to back off on some exercises, so better slow than sorry for me.

My old pedometer looks like it's giving me anywhere from 10-15 extra
steps per 100 steps. It does seem better today, maybe it was just
rusty from it's long period of disuse.

Hope your checkup goes well for you!

The checkup went well.  I'm down 4lbs from a couple months ago, the bf% has
gone down 2% and most measurements were down 1/2 inch.  I'm pleased since I
lost about 3 weeks during this period on medication that caused water
retention and increased my appetite for awhile.  Today was not a real good
day for the diet - too much festival food<g>  But at least I got a bike ride
in this morning and I'm hoping to get back out there Monday.

Great! That's super!

I got a tape measure yesterday so I can measure myself. I only have
really old measurements recorded and would like to get some current
ones to go by in the future.

I wish I had measured myself in the beginning.  Everybody! Measure
yourself!  You'll love making the comparison later, I promise!

Let me second this.  I didn't either, and really wish I had.

I do still have one pair of size 26 jeans -- which is a size I wore at
my very heaviest -- probably around 275 -- several years ago.  They
now look really, really large to me, but I know at one time they
didn't.

Yep, that's exactly it, I'd like to measure now so I have some kind of
benchmark to check on if I seem to stall out on pounds.

I don't have any personal experience with the Tanita, but I understand
that it only measures the fat in the lower body, by passing a current
through one leg to the other or some such.  And I've heard that, as a
result of this, people who carry a disproportionate amount of their
fat below the waist will register an overly-high number.  I don't know
if this is really true (or how it relates to Cynthia's or Beverly's
body types, of course).

But anyway, Cynthia, congratulations on a new milestone!

Thanks Chris. I seem to carry my worst fat in the hips and thighs, but
also in tummy. My lower legs and arms and face don't show it nearly as
much.

I may be getting similar readings between the Tanita at home and the hand
held unit at the gym as my body fat seems to be evenly distributed.  I
probably carry the most fat around the waist area.

That sounds like good news for you, but I don't see how the scale can
know body composition.

The Tanita scales use Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis or BIA. You enter
your height, gender, and antlete or non-athlete into the scale. The scale
discharges a small current through your body that measures the impedance
or resistance to muscle and fat. The more muscle, the lower the value as
the electricity passes easily through lean mass. The scale converts all
of the data to indicate what percentage of the body is fat.
