I was browsing through the other threads (the challenge one) and I don't
own a pedometer :(
I want one, any rec's on brand and functions?
I mentioned before that I am moonlighting waiting tables 3-4 days a week
and someday I feel as if I've walked 100 miles, I would like to see what
I am really putting in each day. Plus, I'd like to join in the next
challenge.

btw, as per the other news of my son, we found out for sure he has type
1 diabetes. So.. we go see an Internist next week and decide on meds
etc. I've also scheduled an appointment with a therapist/counselor for
the other issues. Dallas has done real well with the info overload of
diabetes information he and I have been reading and talking about. I
think he will do well with coping.

Anyway, down a pound this week, and have been doing well on my WOE plan.
Had one slip up and had a biscuit with a big breakfast on
Sunday(breakfast with family) but short of that, staying under 1600 cals
each day, taking all the water I can and keeping up with my walking,
free weights and stationary bike. I'm also sorta surprised at my lb loss
this week as its my TOM(or what I refer to as HELL week) It's day 2 of
it and I hope this months is better than the nightmare one last month.

I spoke to a friend of mine who's daughter has type 1 diabetes.  The
daughter is 17 now and has been working for the last few years toward her
goal of getting an insulin pump - it was even in her IEP at school (she's
also dyslexic). I believe she will be getting it sometime at the end of this
year.  I don't know much about it but I know that it is supposed to be a
wonderful thing.  BTW she sees an endocrinologist.

It's good that your son is mature enough to participate in his treatment.  I
have a number of diabetic students ranging in age from 4-13 and even the
adolescents don't seem to be able to handle aspects of their treatment.  We
(teachers) ended up with schedules from the school nurse (and daily reminder
calls) for these students to check their blood sugar or have their snack,
etc.

I hope everything goes well for you.  If you have specific questions, my
friend said she'd try to answer them. Feel free to email me - this email
works.

My brother-in-law got his pump a few months ago when my
sister discovered she had money in her medical account
that needed to be spent (or lose it).

He had tried controlling his diabetes with diet alone
when he was first diagnosed, but he kept losing weight,
so he was on insulin injections for a few years before
getting the pump. It's made a huge difference for
everyone--he no longer has the highs and lows and the
emotional and physical problems that go along with the
sudden drops--which was a huge relief to my sister.

One of the things they did before having the pump
installed was attend a diabetic support group--it
helped my brother-in-law a lot to understand how other
people deal with the disease, and it helped my sister
understand what he was going through.

Correct me if I'm wrong. My husband participated for a short while in the
diabetic ngs.  They all want the pump so "I can eat whatever I want
then".  The one actual person I know with one is the same way.  This
can't be good?  btw, my husband gave up on those groups because it seemed
as if they were only interested in how to *cheat*.

It depends on what features you want.  If you want to count steps only,
I suspect that about any $10 model will do.  I know that Target had
several in the under $20 range when I was looking for mine.  After that,
it sort of depends on what you want.  Some features include talking
(tells you every 1000 steps), mileage (set stride lenght and it says x
steps times stride length = y miles), etc.

I'm with you.  I hope that we do this sort of challenge every month or two.

Thanks for the update.  I am really sorry that you and your family are
having to go through this.

Well, the main thing is that you were able to get back on track after
the slip and you didn't just say, "Well, TODAY was a loss" and then go
overboard in a not good way, if you catch my drift.  Hang in there!

It's basic, but McDonald's are giving step-based pedometers away with their
go active (something like that) Happy Meals: a salad and a drink, and you
get a ped.

This is the one I own.  I haven't used it recently but I never had any
problems with it.  I just pulled it out of the cupboard and it's still
running and working fine.  It was recommended by the owner of a fitness
store where I shop.

Congrats on the loss!

Sorry to hear the diagnosis was positive but it certainly sounds like you're
doing everything to handle the situation.
