Dropping out of the challenge

It was great while it lasted! It's gotten me back on course walking the stairs
at work *every time* and pushed me to take walks when I can. But my work
schedule and life schedule vary so much from day to day that what I can do in a
day varies equally, and I don't want to set a goal and log and post my numbers
any more. Yesterday, I didn't get out at lunch, and I had maybe 4600 and some
odd. (I've misplaced my pedometer this morning and don't feel like hunting for
it.) Today, I don't expect to be able to get out, either, and I have an
appointment directly after work...I'm...like...busy. (No criticisms. Please?)

I think I'll just remember to do *more* instead of set a specific goal and wear
a pedometer right now. But this challenge has helped me move the right
direction, so to speak. Thanks.

I know what you mean.  I'm staying in the challenge but I failed to meet my
goal yesterday.  I thought the plan was for my DH and I to go empty out the
office since he's closing his consulting business for the teaching job.  So
I didn't go for my walk in the morning because I thought I'd log a lot of
steps going down that long hall taking boxes from the office to the elevator
and then out to the car.  When DH got out of class, he said he only wanted
to go home and sleep since he was finished with his class work and finally
didn't have a paper or presentation to write.  That was OK but by then it
was too damn hot to go out walking.  I only logged 8,028 steps yesterday.
My goal is 12,000 a day.

Good going on the number of steps you *did* log yesterday. You may not
have reached your goal, but you still did well for the day. I hope you
can keep that in mind.

What I'm glad of about this challenge is that, for me, it refocused my
attention on how much walking I do and pushed me to do more. I'd let
myself slip, not always climbing the stairs at work instead of taking
the elevator, for example. So now I'm back to climbing the stairs
dilligently, as I should be. And I've generally been getting outside
more to walk. I'm not planning to drop the focus simply because I
don't wear the pedometer...I'll just not get hung up by the specific
number (and whether I'm a "success" or a "failure" for that specific
day)!

Thanks for reading!  Today, I'm afraid is going to be worse than yesterday.
I just don't want to move my a.s.  It's so hot and humid and I've hardly
done anything.  Maybe it'll cool down later and I'll go walk at a nearby
park that has a 1/4 mile walking path.  It's not as much fun as the park way
across town that has the playa lake in the middle of it but it's much
closer.

I think goals and priorities are important, whether you do them in the
context of a challenge or not. Your schedule may not lend itself to an
"every day the same" kind of activity level. But you should still set
goals that will fit into your life, or you won't stay fit and maintain
your body weight loss.

Since you have been in maintenance a while, you know pretty much what
you need to do on a weekly basis to prevent the scale from going up.
If preventing weight gain and loss of fitness is a high priority to
you, then you should put together a routine that will promote meeting
that goal. You may have to do more on the weekends, or evenings, or
early in the morning. Figure out what you're willing to give up to
give yourself the time to take care of yourself.

Then absent a dire emergency, stick to the program.

I forgot my pedometer yesterday too when I went to the gym  -- there must
have been something in the air!

If you've gotten back on course with adding more daily activity, then you
were a success! Don't worry if you didn't reach a set goal every day -- this
was just a personal challenge, not a competition, and it worked for you!

Thank you, Mary! I did get what I needed from it -- which was great. If I can
find my pedometer (and I *might* know where it is, off hand), I'll probably put
it back on today and then from time to time, I just don't thinking I'm going to
be reporting further!
