5 days of camping w/ the family and the dog.
We took the scenic trip up the gulf coast of florida to Pensacola.
The usual 8hr drive (by interstate) turned into a 13 hr drive. 5 hrs
to go 100 miles along the now tourist coast of Panama City, Destin,
Ft. Walton Beach then into Pensacola. But it was enjoyable.
After 13 hrs in the truck - my butt hurt. :)
We stayed at Big Lagoon State Park. Its right on the bay in Pens so
surrounded by water. Lots of trails leading from the campground,
thru the sand dunes and down to the beaches. So we could walk to the
beach and frollic in the water.
Food wise, I packed the usual camping supplies. From boiled red
potatoes and eggs to make egg salad, coleslaw, pasta salad, fresh
veggies w/ dip. meats - chicken, hamburg, hotdogs and shiskbobs.
Over the weekend the 3 of us didn't even finish 1 whole bag of chips.
Although we did go thru about 4 hershey bars and half a bag of
marshmellows for smores. :)
All in all - I came back and weighed in today no differently than any
other weekend - a few lbs of water retention that should be gone in a
day or so.
It was rather enjoyable.

I really like this place. We try to get there for hiking every time we go
to Pensacola.
Welcome back!

it was very nice, and the breezes along the water front were wonderful
- especially since they have so many of the large picnic pavilions
that overlook the water. Just a very nice place to go relax, watch
the kid swim and play.
We also went out to Ft. Pickens one afternoon, but found sanddune
hiking in 90+ heat too much to handle... even for us floridians. :)
Also out to the National Seashore on Perdido beach. Being
Floridians ourselves we usually steer away from the tourism traps -
like the main drag on Pensacola Beach - we did the drive by, but
didn't stop. We prefer to find the off beat places that are more
true Florida and much quieter and quainter.

My in-laws live on Perdido Key about a mile east of the Flori-Bama
(Oct-May). We also do a lot of walking around the National Seashore. It's
pretty quiet in December :) I did a lot of running along the seashore when
I was there.
We go to Pensacola NAS to golf - they have an awesome course. This last
time we went to a different base with a really small 9 hole course, but I
have no idea what it was.
I totally understand the tourism thing since I live in a town that goes from
approx 3500 year round residents to 50,000+ over this last holiday weekend.
It was so nice to see the bumper to bumper southbound traffic this
afternoon. Even the gym has been full of vacationers which isn't a bad
thing except that a lot of them don't seem to know how to pick up after
themselves - oh, and they bring their kids. :P
