Jarkat2002 - 06 Jul 2004 15:01 GMT I'm having problems finding workout shorts that are long enough or don't give the Fat Chick Ride. (FCR is the way some fat women wear shorts that ride up the middle, I'm sure we all have seen it.) I'm a fat woman (however I'm currently in shrink mode) and hate that particular 'look' although I'm finding it hard to find work out clothes that are made to fit a larger woman. That and the "butt stickers" You know .. the knit pants w/ the knit top that sticks to the woman's butt and just looks awful. Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions on where to find well fitting larger workout clothes at a reasonable cost please let me know. I'm tired of ill fitting, boring workout clothing.

Hey - the FCR doesn't happen to just fat people... :-) Its the "thigh rub Ride" TRR. The one where when you are walking, every so often you have to take your right leg and wiggle it so the shorts go back into place - or worse yet, reach and release them by hand - emulating a buttpick.
I hate that.
For me - my workout clothes at the gym are usually my bike shorts (which are butt stickers) a sports bra or tanktop and a t-shirt over top (keeps the sweat off the equipment).
I found I like the bike shorts best for workouts as they are long enough and hug the thighs enough that I don't feel like I'm flashing the world on the hip abductor machines or on the leg press machines.
The open, loose gym shorts - even those with the tigher lining just are too loose aroudn the thigs that I feel self consious on the machines.
But - the point also is - the butt hugger pants really shouldn't be shied away from - its not like these people are looking at you and what you wear. OK - so they are looking at the workout bunnies - the ones with the fake boobs and skin tight pants and itsy bitsy sports bras. The women in bike shorts and a tshirt they don't pay attention to. :)

Are these the padded bike shorts or just a pair of shorts you wear for biking? I have the padded shorts for biking and doubt I would feel comfortable wearing them at the gym. I have a couple pair of shorts I bought at Walmart for wearing to the gym. They come almost to the top of my knees and they're a stretch material. I love them for working out at the gym.

Generally I bike to the gym when I can - and I'll wear the padded shorts. The wicking the material does is nice to keep the sweat away from the body. I also have the cotton/spandex shorts, but don't really feel that comfortable in those as I do in my bike shorts.
The key is I wear a tshirt over top that I don't tuck in, so it does hide the butt some, so I don't feel so *exposed* when I'm walking around.

This is pretty much what I wear, except that on Olympic lifting nights I wear leggings rather than shorts. This is because the bar can hit or rub against the shins as you pull it up, and long pants help avoid scrapes and bruises.

I always liked the Champion for Women line that is available thru Hanes or JMS. Even though I'm in misses sizes now, I still wear Champions 9" shorts to work out because they hold in all of the loose skin. I wear a sports top and an oversized t-shirt (due to severe scarring on my upper arms and back), except when running outdoors, then I have no choice but to wear a tank top.

Perple Gyrl - 07 Jul 2004 13:45 GMT I learned about these from Jenn and I really like them. I found them at the hanes outlet...

Thanks, there is a Hanes outlet not to far from me, I'll try to get there this weekend.

I wore those NordicTracking just today. They don't get outgrown (or undergrown) too fast because of their elasticity. I'm still wearing my 1X ones even though I'm a size 14 now.
But I also want to recommend pants and shorts from Title 9 Sports. I have "Not-so-tight fitness shorts" and I really like them. Not a clingy material, a good length... they ride up once in a while but not nearly as bad as others I've had.

For longer pants I've got a light-weight breathable pan, their "cross sport pant" t that I really like for when I want leg coverage but not too much warmth:

Same here. What I'd like is something stretchy, just above the knee, and with pockets for my keys, like my sweatpants have.
I have a couple pairs of shorter ones... but they do ride up and it is a pain, so I mostly only wear those around the house for comfort.
Unfortunately, about the only place to shop around here is Walmart. I did manage to find some regular shorts, but I'm not sure yet how well they'd do. Worse, I am right around their upper limit for sizes, and they don't carry much in my size.
If any one knows a place where I can mail order something like this...

They last a long time, and were comfortable for me even when I weighed in at 275 (although the legs are getting pretty flappy now). I wear them constantly during the summer...

I wear them constantly during the summer... Thanks, will check it out. Perhaps I can leave keys in my locker, though I always feel a bit nervous about that. Or find something else to put them in to keep with me.

Chris Braun - 07 Jul 2004 04:47 GMT >If any one knows a place where I can mail order something like this... www.junonia.com is a catalog/internet store exclusively devoted to workout wear for larger women. They tend to be pricey, but they have good quality merchandise in a wide range of sizes and styles.
I also like the spandex shorts they sell at Target. I believe they go up to 2X or so.

Also Target next time I go... but it's a 4 and a half hour round trip, so I don't go often.

My friend down in Maryland commutes that far to DC for work every day. Sometimes it takes 3 hours. I'd kill myself.

And if the distance doesn't get you the traffic will. Fortunately, my commute isn't too bad for here -- around 35-40 minutes -- but I know many people who commute well over an hour each way. When I have to be downtown for something I have to allow 2 hours each way.

That has to wear a body down. In NJ I drove 9 miles to work and here it's 3 to the Blue Poppy Garden and I can walk there :-)

But a friend of mine has been dropping wt for the last year and is about 2-3 sizes smaller than me, she gave me some workout clothes yesterday! I still need a couple of things and would really like to get Yoga pants, but for now at least I have some that won't give me the FCR :)

Well, when I was larger I used something similar to these, found at old navy:
http://www.oldnavy.com/asp/Product.asp?wdid=200802&wpid=233245
I don't think mine had pockets, though- but I did tie the legs up under my knees, so they aren't really shorts but I was waaaay more comfortable in them that I would have been in shorts anyway. They were low rise, too, which was good for me. I was a size 14 when I bought a large, and I see they're webpage goes up to an XXL but I'm not sure what size that would be. I'm not sure what size you are or if you like old navy, but maybe something along those lines might work for you too.

I8bklyn - 06 Jul 2004 22:49 GMT kat, there is a store in california (maybe SF?) and colorado called title nine sports. they have a catalog and a website. if you google under their name you should find it. i threw out my last catalog or i would give you the website here. in any event, they sell a pair of black lycra type shorts called "never ride up" and they do not. i bought mine in XL two years ago, have washed them in washer, line dried and they have also "held up"materalistically. they are a little pricey around $25 + shipping but i think they are worth the price. they come to right above my knew. Title IX sports also has wide variety of bras for the larger busted woman. they are very helpful if you call and speak to them directly and they take everything back (if not worn) no questions asked. hope this helps.
