I got home from North Carolina -- where I was staying with my mom
while she had hip replacement surgery -- last night at around 8:30.
It was a stressful week.  The surgery went well, but Mom was quite
disoriented afterward -- an effect of the pain meds, probably
compounded by her age (88) and her small size (108 lbs.).  She was a
difficult patient -- argumentative without making any real sense.  She
was more lucid yesterday, and was moved into the rehab clinic at noon,
after which I left for the 7-hour drive home.  Unfortunately, soon
after I arrived home I got a call from the rehab place saying that
they'd decided to send her back to the hospital as she was having
severe stomach pain and vomiting.  Apparently it was some sort of
intestinal obstruction, which I gather is cleared up now, but they're
keeping her in the hospital a few more days, and my brother and I are
both keeping in touch by phone.

I ate more than I should have some of the time this week -- sitting
around in Mom's room was a bad combination of boredom and stress --
and I only found time to exercise once.  I would like to not turn to
eating at such times, but I wasn't out of control or anything, and I'm
sure no real harm was done.  (I'll be posting my food & exercise log
later, after I get everything into my spreadsheet.)

It's good to be home, anyway :-).

Welcome back Chris, I hope that your mom's recovery goes better.

I can personally relate here completely!  Having 2 children with special
needs (one severe), I have done the hospital and surgery thing many times.
It is easy to eat all of the wrong things due to stress, and then it has the
double whammy effect when it is hard to get the exercise factor in.  I often
try to take walks with the stairs as much as possible whenever I get a break
from the room.  The problem is the fear of leaving the room very
often...that tends to be when the doctors come.  This seems to be a time
when exercise, etc, just needs to take a back burner for a little bit.  I
sincerely hope all goes well with your mom.  You will be in my thoughts!
Keep us posted on her progress!

Welcome back Chris.  I missed your posts.
Sorry to hear about your mother but I do hope she'll soon be on the

Welcome back, Chris.  You are allowed to be stressed under the
circumstances!  I do hope things settle down for you, and that your mother
makes a good recovery.

Thanks, Mary -- and others who wrote.  Mom is doing better, though
still in the hospital.  We're hoping she may get back to rehab
tomorrow.  I think they're trying to be very sure that she's
processing food normally before they send her back, as the rehab
facility isn't really set up to deal with other medical issues.

I've talked to her on the phone several times and she's still a bit
disoriented, but is getting back closer to normal.  (Normally she's
fine mentally -- maybe a little forgetful but nothing significant.)
