Free weights suggestions?

Looking for some advice concerning free weights and strengthening my
shoulders and arms.  I just began walking again after a very long time, and
it is great for my legs, but I need to work on the rest of me.  My arms have
always been scrawny, no muscle, and I can't afford a gym so I was thinking
that free weights might be the answer.

Any suggestions as to types of exercises, how much weight, when/how to do
it, that sort of thing?  Last time I had any instruction at all was in high
school, some 35-40 years ago!

Thanks,

- Dewolla

A better place to ask this question would be misc.fitness.weights.

Try stumptuous.com, you would find everything.

Also, buy used weights, they are much cheaper. Look for second hand
sports stores.

Weight lifting is a good way to make a better body, better posture,
etc.

A lot of training can be done using your own body as a weight.

Thanks for the responses.  I checked out
http://www.stumptuous.com/weights.html and I'm sure the info I want is in
there somewhere, but it is quite a lot to wade through.  Guess I was looking
for something more like what you'd get as an instruction brochure with a set
of dumbbells.

This is a good supplement to the stumptuous site.  It will show you how to
do the exercises described in Krista's site.  IIRC she has some links to
similar sites for many of her exercises.
http://www.exrx.net/Lists/Directory.html

I was a little overwhelmed when I first started weight training, too.  I
just picked  one of Krista's routines, printed off some examples of the
exercises from the exrx site and started slowly.  After awhile you'll breeze
right through the workouts.

Try misc.fitness.weights, they are not as bad as their reputation, and
they are very fair towards people who are honest about their
condition.

Anyone in MFW would answer immediately the same way Queen did.  In fact,
I as about to post the program8 frame but saw Queen beat me to it.

MFW is best lurked in first.  It's a completely different place.  Much
better to advise her to google in MFW for a thread asking the same
thing, IMO.
