I picked up some lite silken tofu to make some smoothies for breakfast this
week.  I saw that Mary's version didn't mention using milk - just tofu and
berries, but Beverly's does.  It is necessary to use milk?  Just curious.

Its not necessary.   But my suggestion is make some without the milk (save
the calories) and taste it, if it doesn't give you the taste or texture you
like, add a bit of milk and/or ice if necessary to thicken.

My shakes I don't use milk if I'm using fruit and fruit juice - as a way to
save calories.

The thing about smoothies - they are good and healthy, but be cautious on
the ingredients or it can be very calorie dense.

Although one variety of smoothie I like is milk, protien powder (or tofu if
that's your protein source) cocoa powder and splenda.   Chocolate milk
shake.

It wasn't the calories as much as I don't tolerate milk all that well
anymore.  Maybe a little protein powder & water blend could work.

I'm keeping careful track of what's going in it.

I've done it with protein powder and water (instead of milk).  If you chop
the ice up first before adding the liquid, it stays thicker and more like a
milkshake.

I think it would be fine without the milk.  I add the skim milk for
calcium - these old bones need it :)

I have to take a calcium supplement regardless of how much I get by eating
because of my parathyroid problem - which will lead to osteoporosis.  I do
eat a lot of yogurt and other low fat dairy to try and get as much as I can
naturally.  Milk itself makes me kind of ill though.
