Is this possible? I am not sure yet which is the culprit but when I have coffee
(usually with splenda syrups) I have a crash similar to someone coming off
cocaine! I get sick, heart palps, dizzy, aggressive, emotional....I used to
drink coffee all the time!! I still drink caffinated tea and have no problems.
I am really thinking it might be the splenda - I do not lose weight when I have
splenda regularly. I know it is supposed to have no effect on weight loss but
it does for me, for certain. I also feel hungrier and very weird after having a
lot of it. Anyone else have any comments? I dont want to have to give up these
two things - I am getting to the point where I can barely have any foods that
dont make me sick and fat. SIGH!

Do you have a blood sugar monitor, you are describing symptoms of
hypoglycemia. ``sick, heart palps, dizzy, aggressive, emotional''
Supposedly, ating artificial sweeteners makes body produce insulin,
but since there is no sugar to tuck away, blood sugar drops. Coffee
also has a blood sugar lowering effect. I suggest ditching splenda for
you to see if it helps.

I follow an excellent duet for gastric illness. We use diluted regular
coffee not decaf. here is what it says about Splends:
Splenda (sucralose) has been extensively discussed and it is not
allowed for several reasons.
"First, most splenda is packed in a filler called maltodextrin. This is
a starch and is very difficult to digest. So it is not allowed on the
diet.
Splenda, aka sucralose, is a sucrose-like molecule. Basically, they
have added Chlorine atoms to sucrose to make it indigestible by humans.
However, since it is not digestible by us, it does not get absorbed and
passes down the GI tract. It is digestible by bacteria. So in essence,
if you consume sucralose, you are sending down an energy source to the
bacteria you are trying to starve. So sucralose is not allowed.

thanks for the good comments. I tried caffeine only today without splenda and I
felt fine. I think sucralose needs A LOT more testing before people start
claiming it doesn't affect you like sugar - it sure did me and I am literally
allergic to sugar. Thanks everyone!

allergic to sugar? Can you tell us more about this allergy? types of testing?
what happens? what kind of sugar?

It is not hard at all to live without sweeteners, if you cannot eat
them, like you.

This relates to my Specific Carbohydrate Diet which is not for weight
loss and excludes maltodextrin, also Stevia.

A study was just publicized showing artificial sweeteners cause weight
gain. Maybe you are looking at the wrong mind :-)

I think you should have more faith in you understanding of your own
body. If you don't think splenda is working for you then don't take it.

Splenda has been great for me. No problems whatsoever. I've taken to
carrying a few packets in my purse in case I'm having coffee away from
home. But YMMV.

Well, V, ALL foods will make you sick and fat in excess. Keep at it -
you've got every meal for the rest of your life to figure out how to
feed your body. You'll get it eventually, considering how much practice
you get to do!

You sure like to take the most dramatic approach you can think of
to any issue.

Classic low blood sugar symptoms linked with the release of
adrenaline in response to the low blood sugar. Caffeine makes
any existing hypoglycemic symptoms worse.
> I still drink caffinated tea and have no problems.
Right, the caffeine almost certainly.
> I am really thinking it might be the splenda
That's quite an assumption in the face of symptoms that are
classic for low blood sugar.
> I do not lose weight when I have splenda regularly. I know it

Who cares about what it's supposed to do. Everyone is
different.
> for certain.
Dubious since you jump to conclusions far too fast.
> I also feel hungrier and very weird after having a

What's a lot? Some folks take 3 packets per day as their
maximum. Are you using more than that?
> Anyone else have any comments?
Drop splenda and caffeine *separately*. Drop one this week
and wait two weeks. Then add that one back and drop the
other.
Because your symptoms sound like hypoglycemia, look closely at
your carb intake. Actually how spread out it is across the
day more than the amount of carbs.
