Slim-Fast is not only a terrible way to control one's weight, now the
company has revealed itself to be just another anti-freedom-of-speech
corporation. Slim-Fast has fired comedian Whoopi Goldberg for speaking
out against George W. Bush. Bravo Whoopi!

Support the First Amendment, and stop supporting Slim-Fast. Far better
alternatives can be found at http://www.slimstore.com/ (and many other
sites).

Note that Slim-Fast products contain aspartame, which inside the
gastrointestinal tract, especially in the stomach, is broken down into
its constituent components. In some instances the dipeptide is lysed
within the cells of the gut. Within the tissues, substantial amounts
of methanol's two metabolic breakdown products (formaldehyde and
formic acid) have been shown to accumulate in many tissues.
Formaldehyde and formic acid are extremely toxic to tissues in very
small amounts.

Way to go Slim-Fast.  I suppose I had better buy some of their
products now.  Thanks for pointing this out!

that's not anti-freedom at all.

whoopi goldberg has complete freedom to espouse her views and to compare
bush to female genitalia

however, slim-fast, who hires whoopi as a SPOKESPERSON, iow a representative
of their company has every right not to hire (or to fire) a public
representative of their company based on perception that her
image/statements will hurt their bottom line

THAT is part of freedom as well

if a slim fast rep had openly marched in a KKK rally, espoused racial
hatred, etc. would you be decrying slimfast for their decision?

of course not.  it's a content based analysis

the reality is that with some exceptions (like civil service public
employees), these are responsible and legal BUSINESS decisions.

certainly, a company can decide to fire a person who presents a public face
of their company, based on this person's public statements.  this has ALWAYS
been true.  look at lynn redgrave for pete's sake

Slim Fast is part of Unilever, so there's plenty of ways you can show
your support, e.g. Bertolli Olive Oil.

I could never stomach that gunk anyway.  When are they going to start making
instant shakes that taste like potatoes anyway?

Mind your cross-posting, Em, I'm pretty sure you don't post in all those
groups.  I trimmed it down to alt.support.diet.

The answer to your question is Myoplex Lite.  I really like the
Cappacino Ice, but I love all the flavors (except Orange, which my
children like, and Chocolate Fudge, which is a sad parody of chocolate.)

I buy it at www.vitaglo.com and usually get two boxes plus some vitamin
or another and get free shipping.

You will notice on the side of slim-fast, boost, etc., it says the product
can be used for weight loss.  With Myoplex and others, it says, do not use
for weight loss, and these statements have not been evaluated by the FDA.  I
finally found the real reason, I think.  To get a product FDA approved costs
a lot of money, and many double blind, placebo controlled studies.
Supplements companies do not want to take that time and effort to get a
product approved.

re: vitaglo

I have returned some boxes of Myoplex because the taste was really bad.  So,
I stopped using them for a while and have been buying locally.

re:  Supplements

I watched senate testimony by several people about steroid use and teens.
The doctor who testified said that a coach will sometimes tell a student to
add 20 lbs. of muscle during the summer break.  The point made several times
over during the testimony was, there is no way one can add 20 lbs. of muscle
in 3 months unless they are juicing or lying (said they did but didn't,
lol).  This applies to both children and adults.

Right after hearing that,  I looked at the 'body for life' web page and saw
this person claiming to add 18 lbs. of lean mass in 12 weeks:

http://www.bodyforlife.com/success_stories/timothy_leaman.shtml

Lean mass is everything but fat, so maybe his teeth got heavier or
something, lol.

Nothing like political debate in a diet group, lol.  I thought being
conservative had to do with traditional values and institutions.  When did
trashing people and/or companies enter into the conservative movement?

Here is an idea:  How about you do not buy slimfast because it is
GARBAGE.  It is nothing but processed fake food that is anything but
good for you.

[a] SlimFast is bullshit.
[b] Your junk science is bullshit.*
[c] Whoopi Goldberg is bullshit.

Treat all three accordingly.

Well, yes.

Uh-huh.  "Dude, it's, like, processed 'n' stuff, and like, not
natural, y'know, so it's, like, bad for ya."  How scientific.
