Here I am, same stupid 20 pounds again

Melissa - 19 Jul 2004 15:16 GMT Ugh. I am so stupid. Every few years I do the same thing...gain back the same 15-20 pounds that I've lost before. In the past, I've kept it off as long as 4-6 years, then it came creeping back. This past 18 months, it's come slamming back.
I know "some" of it has to do with my age, 45, and peri-menopause. I'm all over the map with my cycle, and the mood swings are worse, and I tend to be an "emotional" eater. The past year especially has been very difficult for me on a couple of levels...stressful family issues, minor financial issues, just plain life really. I've been really busy, and have let my exercise really slide to the point of non-existent. There is no excuse for this...we have a good stepper and a really good quality weight machine. Hubby is really good at his 3x per week workouts.
So I'm back to 140 pounds, from where I should be at 120-125.
So today I'm back to counting calories, 1,400 my daily goal. Cutting back on the refined white food and sugars, more greens, and I'm going to hit the exercise room. No unattainable goals...just realistic. At least 3 times per week workouts, weight loss of 1-2 pounds per week. I know from experience that the first few pounds go quickly, and then it slows down.
I know all this. Why did I let myself get back to this point? (theoretical question) I know I feel better when I take care of myself. I know I feel better when I feel better about myself. I know I know I know.

What you are describing sounds not perfect, but there are much worse alternatives. Like ballooning to 300 lbs.
If you gain and lose 20 lbs and are normal/close to normal in weight, over many years, I would say, you deserve a solid B in weight management.

I am not sure if 125 is a good goal weight for you -- could be pretty ambitious given your upcoming menopause -- but if you stay under 140, that would be great.

Melissa - 19 Jul 2004 16:19 GMT My biggest frustration is that I'm very smalled boned...I wear a size 4 ring and have very little hands and wrists etc. On the other hand, I am broad shouldered, and carry most of my weight between my shoulders and hips.
I don't gain weight like most women...I have a large waist and small hips and thighs and basically no butt. I "hide" my weight, but it makes it tough to buy clothes. If I get pants to fit my waist/tummy, they are too large in the legs.
I've also had 4 kids...who are now 24, 22, 20, and 17. My tummy is very large, lots of fat and skin there. Even when my weight is down to 120, (my lowest was 116), I don't have a small waist and my tummy is always a bit flabby. It's frustrating, when you have 20" thighs (at my 120 weight) to have a 28 inch waist along with 35" hips.
Right now I'd like to get back to 130, and on a regular exercise routine again. I just hit the weight room, 5 minutes warm up on the stepper, 1 round on the ParaBody machine, another 10 on the stepper, and stretches when done.
I know from experience that when I exercise on a regular basis, my weight is very stable. Getting the exercise back into my routine is at the top of the list.

I read an interesting book about aging, and it said that with menopause, weight for women migrates from their butt and hips to the waist.

Sounds like you have a good plan, you know you can't change things like small boned and wide shouldered, but at least you will look your best. Plus, exercise supposedly helps with osteoporosis.
Good luck!

Melissa - 19 Jul 2004 17:24 GMT > Has it always been this way? Yes, for the most part, my shape has always been this way. My ribs weren't so broad before having kids, but I got very large with my 3rd son, hit 170 pounds and he weighed almost 9 pounds. My shape changed the most after him I think.
When I look at pictures of myself when I was younger, even when thin I was pretty straight up and down with not much shape. I weighed 120 when I got married, but of course at age 18, looked different than I do now at 120.
I am going to try to not get caught up in the scale, and just do what I know to do.

Chris Braun - 21 Jul 2004 04:14 GMT >I read an interesting book about aging, and it said that with >menopause, weight for women migrates from their butt and hips to the >waist. I think this is generally considered to be true, but it's generally a change to where one carries bodyfat. A relatively lean woman isn't going to have dramatically different proportions than she did when younger.
I weigh now about what I did in college. My measurements then were roughly 40-27-41; now they're roughly 39-28-38. I'd guess my bf% is lower now, with muscle making up more of the size. My breasts are smaller but my pecs and back are wider. My butt is flatter and my quads are more muscular. My hipbones were and are wide, but I have never carried fat on the outer hip area. My tummy was pretty flat then and is now, but definitely not when I was heavy. It took some time for my waist measurement to shrink in proportion to other things, but now it has. When I was heavy, though, I definitely carried more weight through the middle than I probably would have when younger. My waist was over 40" at my heaviest (actually around 275 lbs., a couple of years pre-diet).

Well, I gained sort of slowly between ages 30 and 45, then added some more rather rapidly after entering perimenopause. I then stayed in the 250-275 range for several years before deciding to lose weight. I was lifting and going to the gym regularly before I decided to lose weight, so I was relatively fit for somebody that size, so I didn't find it a real hardship being that overweight. But I like it better this way :-).

You'll find that some of us have never left. :)

Welcome back, your plan sounds very good. I have much more to lose this time around, but the goal is - like yours - to bring back the exercise routine into the daily schedule (which I managed to do in the last 3 days :-)
Elly breastfeeding mom of a 9 months old, on a balanced low carb WOE Mid July 2004: 193.6 / 193.6 / mini-goal by August 20th: 182.6 sometime in the (distant) future: 150 lbs
Brad Sheppard - 19 Jul 2004 19:40 GMT Melissa,
daily weighings work for me. Without them I might "refeed" big time.

I know how easy it is to let those pounds slip back on<g>
