Steve Bayt - 20 Jul 2004 23:35 GMT STEVE BAYT (Parma/Brook Park, Ohio) Original posting failed on Sunday
Prologue: As usual I am not trying to convince the usual people who post one-line brain dead comments against my attempts to save the lives of millions of people on Atkins/ Low Carb Death Sentence. My only interest is the responses of Internet readers' doctors and emergency room personnel throughout the country.
Also, although love means never having to say, you're sorry. I would like to apologize for the lack of proofreading in last Sunday's article. Where the posting form bottom has after "Preview Message" the choices of "Go Back and Edit" or "Post", my cat accidentally jumped on my desk and moved the mouse over to Post instead of where I had it at Go Back And Edit
People interested in not dying on Atkins/Low Carb death style should consult their doctors and not consult newsgroup responders-who if on Atkins/Low Carb will probably be dead within 2 years.. There is no American Doctor who will disagree with 98% of the contents of my articles. .
**************************
Pre-Kathryn Morris Article:"Turning Atkins Into a Closed Case":
DEDICATED TO REBECCA SCHAEFFER who died on July 18,1989. Because in America we wait for tragedies to occur, with so few to prevent them in the first place.
Hopefully everyone in these groups has gone to a library and read the many medical books in the NF616 section. The question of Atkins shouldn't be is Atkins/ Low Carb fatal, but how can one survive the inevitable Atkins Related Heart Attack (ARHA.)
Sunday's July 18,2004 comic Fox Trot foreshadowed of 2005 and Atkins. While Bill Amend created a Tina Fey-like satire. My articles along with Consumer Reports June 2002 page 30 et al etc. paints more of a MASH-like Black Humor.
THE TOTAL GUIDE TO A HEALTHY HEART copyright 1999 by Seth. J. Braun, MD, FACC a board certified Cardiologist and professor at Florida Atlantic University spends many pages describing what I call Atkins Related Death Syndrome. Pages 151, 165, 162 and 163 have two great passages:
"What Atkins neglects to share with the reader is that his diet can be dangerous" "The Atkins Diet is the adult equivalent of telling children that they can solve their dietary problems by entering a candy store and eating whatever they want."
THE YALE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE HEART BOOK call number 616.12 by Barry L. Zaret et al. copyright 2002 supports my ARHA claims on pages 54, 56, 142, 339, 342, 347, 259 et al. I am hoping Atkins' healthy next of kin will utilize carbs to burn off fat by walking or biking to the library and not just sitting in front of their computers to verify my claims.
Consumer Reports June 2004 page 12 "NET CARB claims on labels have vastly outstripped the scientific evidence". "In April, The Department of Treasury Alcohol and Tobacco and Trade Bureau ruled labels on wine, beer and distilled beverages can't even imply the term net carb' or any low-carb claim plays a healthful role in weight maintenance "
HEART ATTACK ADVICE TO PATIENTS BY PATIENTS copyright 2002 by Kathleen Berra MD. Published by Yale University Press and the Cardiac Therapy Foundtion in Palo Alto (call number 616.1237) states on page 140:
"The Atkins Diet have not been studied thoroughly and there is little scientific information on which to base conclusions" Page 87 and Page 119 profile people who survived heart attacks about a year into Atkins ,which I am calling Atkins Related Heart Attacks(ARHA's).
Those people survived because someone called 911 within the hour time that determines life and death of an ARHA person. For 60% of ARHAers' die before arriving at the hospital. 50% of the situations resulted in death before Paramedics even arrived. An overwhelming number of times a medical examiner (like on Crossing Jordan or CSI) explains something like "The group decided to hold an all day meeting to decide whether the person was having a heart attack."
Many coroners report people died before a call was even made. If you're with someone on Atkins for more than a year or so call 911 first then apologize if wrong later.
Also, collectively averaging 40 books I used for the last three articles, a heart attack victim has a 25-30% increased chance of survival if someone at the scene knows CPR. For paramedics will arrive with everything else needed.
Every year about 720,000 people die due to Atkins related death style. Half because people around the ARHAer didn't take the situation seriously enough to call 911. Anyone who knows someone on an Atkins / Low Carb death style should monitor them closely during any aerobic activity. They should also insist the Atkins person have regular Electrocardiograms, Body Fat Tests and Cholesterol tests. A few trips to their doctor could get them off Atkins and able to not suffer an ARHA.
It is vital that anyone on Atkins inform someone at any events where aerobic activity will be involved. For after even 6 months on Atkins, the excessive fat and lack of carbs could result in heart attacks. Although a year on Atkins is a more realistic time frame.
There should be plenty of people with cell phones turned on with speed dial to the local emergency room. For with an Atkins Related Heart Attack every second will mean the difference between an Atkins Intervention at a hospital, and an Atkins Funeral.
Anyone on Atkins who decides to exercise alone should take a cell phone with a plastic cover so the phone won't break when the heart attack starts. It would save more time if the phone has a speed dial to the local hospital instead of 911 for if one can't speak, the hospital operator can then use GBS to locate the person with an ambulance. A call to 911 would create ambiguity as to a police or medical emergency.
Everyone on Atkins should never go exercising without a cell phone, or some identification with a website that ER personnel could use to tell specifically what the ARHAer has done. As previously stated, a doctor will be able to tell generally how much fat and cholesterol an ARHA has, but there is no Carbohydrate Test. Or any need to restrict one's amount.
If a group is at an event involving aerobic activity, even a softball game, and a known Atkins person starts grabbing their chest, don't assume it's not a heart attack. For following Atkins will most certainly result in Coronary Artery Disease.
If the event is at a location where a hospital is too far away for a paramedic to arrive, the ARHAer should be taken to the hospital with the ARHAers minimum exertion. If they have eaten recently try to get them to sit up to avoid suffocation by vomit. Once the healthy low fat high carb person(s) gets the AHRAer to the ER, they should yell as loud as possible something like "This person is having a heart attack". Continuing YALE's HEART BOOK the persons should be as obnoxious as necessary to get immediate attention.
No hospital employee will ever, ever, ever, ever, be even remotely upset for even a false alarm or any amount of obnoxiousness in the hospital.
Alcoholics have interventions usually at their homes by loved ones who escort them to rehab centers. Atkins Related Heart Attack sufferers will have their interventions at Coronary Care Units surrounded by hospital employees.
Loved ones of ARHAers should expect their ARHAer to have a 10-day hospital stay. During that time they should make sure the Atkins food has been thrown out, along with all their low-carb foods and somewhere the ARHAer probably has a 10-foot poster of Dr. Atkins to be shredded.
When they arrive home their diets should be carefully monitored to make sure the ARHA survivor is eating at least 200 grams of Carbs and no more than 20% of calories from fat.
The biggest factor of how many millions of people will die in 2005 due to the media allowing mass communication of the concept of Atkins/Low Carb death style, will be how many ARHAers make it to the hospital. About 4 00,000 Heart Attack sufferers die before a paramedic even arrives.
There are no long-term studies on Atkins (Berra page 40) simply because there are so few long-term survivors. Either people save themselves by going back to a healthy diet, due to human's self-protection mode, or they die.
For people can't survive without at least 100 grams daily of carbohydrates. In order to maintain that amount many people will seemingly subconsciously consume carbohydrates without even knowing. Most bodies' instinct to stay alive will prevail without any conscious level recognition they are actually eating carbs.
It's sort of like the thousands of subconscious things people do every day to not die-like properly walking down stairs, not cutting oneself during dinner preparation.
Many people who start entering pre-ARHA mode will simply subconsciously consume carbohydrates. Thus, the self-instinct survival could save millions of lives. How many millions of ARDS totals will ensue will be a sort of battle between conscious level marketing and subconscious level survival.
The danger of the present marketing is that fewer products are available which have carbohydrates. At present pace, people's self-instinct to not die won't be possible. The July 18, 2004 FOX TROT Satire of the lack of carbohydrates in the market place should really be viewed as black humor. For "Fox Trot" quotes "This Atkins craze can't end soon enough" It certainly can't for there are only so many paramedics and Colma, California is too full of dead people.
The next article: Adam Walsh, Columbine, Rebecca Schaeffer, AIDS, September 11 and Atkins. Can disasters be prevented? Or must there be death before apologies. For Love Means Never Having To Say. You're Sorry.
STEVE BAYT
EPILOGUE:
To get help for those on Atkins or loved ones who don't want to be attending funerals go to www.clevelandclinic.org/heartcenter www.americanheart.org Call 1-800-242-8721 or THE CLEVELAND CLINC Preventive Cardiology Rehabilitation Program (216)444-9353. Visit your local library's NF616 section. Or the most preferred option to visit your local hospital or any doctor. For According to HEART DISEASE FOR DUMMIES Coronary Rehab Programs are so good that 88% of Heart Attack survivors don't have a 2nd.

drhowarddrfinedrhoward - 21 Jul 2004 01:00 GMT Most of what you posted has to do with heart attack victims and nothing to do with Atkins.
My sons world famous trainer has been doing an Atkins style low carb diet since the 1950s. He is now 76 and has had thousands of advocates, including my family.
You quote news stories but you, apparently, are not aware of anyone who has positively had this problem.
There are other "low-carb" diets besides Atkins, including "Protein Power", the Paleo diet, and others but you do not mention them. Why are you targeting Atkins only?
Doug Freyburger - 21 Jul 2004 19:10 GMT > There are other "low-carb" diets besides Atkins, including "Protein Power", > the Paleo diet, and others but you do not mention them. Why are you > targeting Atkins only? Eating all those excess carbs apparently caused so much brain damage that he no longer has the intellectual capacity to flame other popular low carb plans.

|| "The Atkins Diet have not been studied thoroughly and there is little | scientific information on which to base conclusions" Page 87 and Page | 119 profile people who survived heart attacks about a year into Atkins | ,which I am calling Atkins Related Heart Attacks(ARHA's). I have been doing Atkins since November 2001. These are some of my before - and current - statistics:
Blood Pressure Before: 165/92 (very high) Blood Pressure Now: 120/70 (nomal)
Cholesterol Before: 232 (Very high) Cholesterol Now: 188 (nomal)
Triglycerides Before: 650 + (deadly level; off the doctor's scale) Triglycerides Now: 217 (still a bit high, but still dropping and no longe deadlya)
Weight before: 270 pounds (very high) Weight now: 215 pounds (within a few pounds of nomal for 6'3")
Fasting blood glucose before: 132 (high) Fasting blood glucose now: 91 (normal)
HbA1c before: 9.0 (extremely high) HbA1c now: 6.0 (normal)
In addition, I have had my kidney and liver functions checked also during my annual physicals; both are perfectly normal. My former chronic IBS as well as acid reflux disease are completely gone, with no medications.
I am off two medications for high blood pressure (including a transdermal catapes patch that I woe 24 hours a day); I am completely off medications for acid reflux and IBS, my diabetes is completely contolled with my Atkins diet with absolutely no medication, and the cholesterol and dramatic triglyceride drops have been just through my Atkins diet, with no medications.
My doctor is ecstatic with the incredible health improvements I have achieved solely through my Atkins diet; she says I am her "best patient" and uses me as an example to her other patients with conditions similar to what I had.
Now please explain to me again -- so that I can understand -- how the Atkins diet was supposed to have given me a heart attack after one year? Is it the lower cholesterol, lower blood sugars, lower triglycerides, lower weight or the lower blood pressure that is supposed to cause this?
I think you need a new hobby.

wsinoler@ready.gov - 22 Jul 2004 11:54 GMT >Yeah, I just Googled him and saw his numerous other "crusades" such as >trying to get Soap Opera Digest closed down. He's a genuine nut job. This is exactly why people like you need these fad diets. If you got so much time on your hands to sit in front of a computer spending hours tracing people, then it's no wonder you are fat and need a diet. Why not get off your fat a.s and get some exercise. Who knows, you might even find your Atkins bible is no longer needed, because you are losing weight from doing things, and might even develop a life in the process. Until you do, you are all a bunch of lifeless fat blobs melting your fat into a chair. In fact, did anyone ever notice that dieters like yourself are so damn lazy that you cant even say the full words. You say carb instead of carbohydrate, and say abs instead of abdominal muscles, and cal instead of calories, etc. Of course we all know that you need to use those jaw muscles for chewing, and there is little time to use them for talking. They are lilkely the only muscles in your body that are developed.

Oh goody. Normal Consumer is back. What's the sob story this time? Let's see, you tried; "I lost my wife because of Atkins" last time. Why don't you try some tall tale involving children or a family pet this time? Better yet, use pets *and* children.

You know you are wasting your time trying to convince those who the Atkins Corp. have brainwashed. They are a cult, more powerful than those religious suicide cults, but the end result is the same.
If the Monsanto Corp. used these same techniques used by the Atkins Corp. they would have people drinking insecticides, and would have lots of these brain dead persons actually drinking it by the gallons.
We live in a world where there are many people who cant live without having something to worship. For some it's religion, for others, particularly those who are worried about their weight, it's the quack doctor Atkins and the scam business he created. Many will die from their suicides created by their worshipping these cults, and others will ruin their lives permanently. The bottom line is that no one is going to convince them they are wrong. That's the programming they have been put thru. There are de-programmers for religious cults, but so far there does not appear to be a de-programmer for the Atkins cultists, at last not yet.
