hello all ...
I got a wake-up call yesterday .. after years of being "a few pounds
overweight (okay more than a few ;-), the fates have decided that my
"extra pounds" need to leave or my pre-diabetes will become a roary
diabetes sooner than later or so says my ever-lovin' doctor.
Dang it! I was hoping for a few more years of decadence :-)
I'm looking to do this "shedding" in a sensible manner because I've
tried the fads and it's not worked.
Lower carbs, lower calories (nothing excessively low), moderate
exercise and a whole cart load of determination ... <?>
I'll let you know how it's going ... mornings are always full of
determination aren't they :-)
more to come ...

Imagine an imaginary person who is holding you at gunpoint and demands
that you eat less, more correctly, and exercise more. This is, in
fact, very close to your situation.

Wouldn't it be easier to change the way you think about food? The reality
is that many of the former foods you ate are poison to you now. It worked
for me.

That's just the phrase I use (borrowed from Overeaters Anonymous) when visually
tempted by sugar, especially those lavish dessert cases in restaurants: "Poison in
pretty packages." It works for me too!

Sounds like a good approach. You might check out my diet and fitness
page if you feel like reading how I've managed it. My method in brief
was to recognize that I don't have a lot of willpower and so to diet,
but gently.

Exercise, exercise ! More you exercise, more muscles you build, less you
will eat, better your BG numbers will look.
For stimulation, watch sports on TV, buy and read fitness magazines, read
about it, talk about it.
Find some one, friend willing to work out with you or play with you, like
tennis, bicycling or other sports, join a club.
Make fitness your life style.
You'll feel stronger, healthier, smarter, no stress, takes you through work
and dally life easier.
Your diabetes will be a lot more controllable.

Welcome, Mary Mag -- so like my own name (Mary Margaret though I don't use the
Margaret) -- and so like my own situation (lots of diabetes in my family and if I
hadn't kicked the sugar habit 19 years ago I'd be in the same boat -- I don't believe
for a minute that overconsumption of sugar doesn't contribute to diabetes, as many
claim -- you can't put that much strain on your insulin/blood sugar functions without
some kind of consquences). Your plan sounds good and we are here if you need support.

Welcome, mary mag! This is a good group (I'm writing from
alt.support.diet, and not cross-posting to whereever else you sent
your originial message) and I think you can get a lot of help with
your new lifestyle. And it's surely better to start now than to wait
a few years :-).

Looks good. I think the main thing I learned from my loss is that
shooting for slow & steady losses is the best way to go.
I don't know how much you need to lose, but 1 or 2lbs a week will get
you there without much pain or sacrifice, as long as you indeed cut
out the empty calories and just eat for health & energy.
I also found it useful to track my weight every day in a graph. The
ups & downs every day diminish in importance when you can see the big
picture in a graph, and seeing the trend go downwards was good
motivation for me to stick with the plan and not torpedo it.

I'm sure your doctor has told you about it but most people follow either
carb counting or exchange diets.
