Matty - 26 Jul 2004 16:47 GMT
Well, another month has passed on my journey to a 'slimmer' me. Had some ups and downs, I've been consistent with my calories - I am currently averaging 1900cal/day. For the most part I've been under my daily limit, but there have been a few occasions of going over. Only one occasion that was a significant amount, that being last night, where I went over by 383cal. I trace it back to feeling nervous for my wife; she had to go to court today to help out a close friend of ours. She was feeling a little overwhelmed and I was picking up on that. I don't feel too badly about going over, I was under on calories Friday & Saturday by a total of 490cal, so it kind of evened itself out. I am still struggling with my emotions & eating, but Rome wasn't built in a day, so I can learn from my mistakes and move on.

I told the folks on the alt.support.diet group this, but I had reached another goal this past month! Our yard is a bear to mow; we sit on corner lot that is a total of 1-½ city lots, with a large portion of it being grass. Since we have lived in the house (6 years) I have been able to mow the entire yard a total of maybe 3 times, each time taking over 3 hours to do with our power mower. Mainly I have been doing about half before I have to quit because I'd get so winded and tired that Brenda (my wife) would have to take over. Even doing ½ the yard it'd take me 1-½ hours. Well, 2 weeks ago I was able to do the entire yard myself in get this, a little over 1 1/2 hours! Brenda was happy that I could do it, but was concerned that I had gotten a little dehydrated in the process. May not seem like much, but the feeling of being able to complete a 'manly' task like that was very satisfying.

I found out through my boss that his doctor's office had a scale that weighs around 600lbs. Since the doctor's office is a part of my doctor's association I am able to use their scale now instead of having to trek up to Grand Rapids! I went out today and found that another 12.6lbs have found their way off my body! This rate of loss is down about 1lb/week from the last couple of months which now equals out to around 3.11lbs/week vs. 4lbs/week. But I'm still above the average of 1.5lbs/week, which is excellent! With this continued weightloss I should be hovering around 350lbs by Christmas. I haven't weighed that since at least 9th grade. My wife had commented to me that she is glad but also surprised that I have been able to stick with this WOE/WOL (way of eating/way of life) for this long. I too have been amazed, but with the support I have from all of you it really hasn't been that hard to stick with it.

Thanks again to all of you for your prayers and encouragement, I really do appreciate all of it!

Here's a little recipe that I've modified to make it a bit more low fat/low cal:

Matty's Taco Pie

1 to 1 1/2 lbs ground turkey

1 medium onion, chopped (Vidalia preferred, but whatever's available)

1 sweet red pepper, chopped

½ cup black olives, sliced

1 packet taco seasoning (Lawry's, Old El Paso, Generic, whichever)

½ cup baked Lay's tortilla chips, crushed

2 containers crescent rolls (any brand will do, try for light/low fat variety)

½ cup shredded cheese (use real cheese, low fat/reduced fat doesn't melt well)

½ cup non-fat sour cream (I use non-fat, feel free to use whatever you like)

Brown turkey & drain fat; add onion, sweet red pepper, olives, & taco seasoning

Simmer all until cooked through (onion will become translucent)

Grease a 9"-10" pie pan (glass is better) and unroll crescent rolls into pan to form a piecrust

Sprinkle crushed tortilla chips over bottom of crust

Spoon turkey mixture evenly into piecrust

Spoon sour cream evenly over top of turkey mixture

Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over sour cream

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and bake for 30-45 minutes, or until crust is done and not doughy

Cut into 8 slices and serve with tortilla chips & salsa (homemade salsa is best!).

Matty, your success is very inspiring and your slow (relative to your
weight) rate of loss is a good thing. I am happy for you.

Thanks Ig,

Is it my understanding now that the less weight I have, the less calories
are burned, thus the less weight I lose? I have been noticing the since I've
started that my calories burned are starting to go down. Not sure if I
should cut back the calories some more or ride it through the next month and
see what happens. What's your opinion?

Yes, although the dependency may not be very linear.

Are you losing 3-3.5 lbs per week? If so, I think, you are in an
optimal point. The most important point is to a) stick with the
program, which is easier if you eat enough, and b) not mess yourself
up too much by too rapid weight loss.

Just in case if you are ever frustrated by supposedly "slow progress",
(which I am not alleging you are), then note that you will have to
"stay on a diet" forever to maintain your weight loss.

Your weight loss is only a first phase in the lifetime of
conscientious eating. Most likely, when you arrive at some reasonable
weight, you will eat about as much as you are now (1900 cals), maybe
as much as now plus a sandwich sized amount of food. I know that your
target weight is 250 lbs, which is fine and would let you eat maybe
2700 calories per day, but, I suppose, once you get there you might
decide to drop a bit of weight further.

Seems like I get the advice I need at the time I need it most. Thanks Ig,
your thoughts are well-noted...

hmmm, I guess one *could* use as a rule of thumb a good optimal rate
of 1% of bodyweight/week *max*. I haven't come across that before, but
it does make a certain amount of sense for nearly everyone AFAICT.

Now that I'm safely under 200 I don't feeld the need to lose 2lbs/week
anymore :)

I thought I was going to stop at 200, but why stop when you're on a
roll -- I'm more worried about *not* stopping at this point.

Wonderful news, Matty! Personally, I wouldn't worry about going over 1900 calories --
that's very little calories for a person of your starting/current weight.

Matty, I'm so happy for you!  You're doing wonderfully!  Just take it
a day at a time, and remember that every pound lost is a victory.  And
do keep us posted!
