Mary E. Hill - 26 Jul 2004 22:06 GMT I've never been to this group before - hi all! You guys look very interesting and good for me:)
I'm going to a place called LA Weightloss tomorrow http://www.laweightloss.com and talking to them about what they do. I've been to weightwatchers and didn't stick with it. Has anyone been to this place before? I wonder if there's been any successes (besides the ones they provide!).
I was reading down through the posts and saw mention of pizza and beer - I think I'll have some of each tonight before I crack down on it:)
Thanks for being here & sharing...
Mary
Patricia Heil - 27 Jul 2004 00:37 GMT Have you worked with your doctor? Did he give you a referral to a registered dietitian or state-licensed nutritionist? If not, then you need a different doctor.
Apply the same standards to LAW. Who are you working with? What is their training? Look at their diplomas. Check their school out on the web. If they don't have state licensing as nutritionists and they aren't registered dietitians, they shouldn't be advising you on eating.
What tests are they going to run while you pay them money? If they won't be checking cholesterol and triglycerides and other blood chemicals, how will they know you are healthy?
What do they say about exercise? Do they have training as sports instructors? If not, why not? If they don't tell you to exercise, leave. You can't be healthy without exercise.
Do they want you to buy supplements? What is in the supplements? Get a printout of the values. Take them to the store and check the price of the supplements against a bottle of Centrum. Then consider two facts. One is that clinical studies show that anti-oxidants and fiber from supplements are less effective than getting them from food. The other is that megadoses of all nutrients can cause problems.
If you didn't stick with weigh watchers, why not? The chances are the same thing will happen with LA Weightloss. Did you ever join a gym? Did you stick with that? If not, then your pattern is not to stay with anything. Why go to the expense?
If you want to be healthy, you have to exercise and you have to eat portions that are limited in size and number from a wide variety of high fiber low fat food. You can do this on about $2500 in food and $200 in shoe-leather per year. Now look at what LAW will charge you. Why spend the money? First learn to stick with whatever program you start. Then if your health doesn't improved, work with your doctor first.

LA Weightloss is much the same as any weighloss company. They tell you what to do, show you how to do it and then it is up to YOU. If you are motivated to lose, you will, and if you aren't - you won't.
Trouble is - if you are motivated to lose you don't need LA Weightloss. You can get the same information from any library or probably a zillion websites on line. There is no magic wand that they wave that makes you lose weight. It is all up to your following their diet and sticking to it. Their diet plans are based on calorie intake (surprise!) just like most other sensible weightloss plans.
They also have "snacks" that they require you to eat which, surprise again! they sell. Those snacks are nothing more than meal or snack replacements and, again, have no magic effect on the diet. But it makes them a pretty penny to require them as part of the diet and sell them as a pretty price, if I recall.
They will give you the hard-sell (there was a lot of emphasis on SALES there, as I recell). Really you are better off saving the cash and doing your own research as to a low-cal diet plan (with exercise, of course) that will work for you.

I'm not 12 - I've been at war with myself over weight since that age. But a bit of support IS helpful. So thank you for an actual answer to the actual question!
My sister made an appt for both of us there today. I had never heard of the place before yesterday, that's why I asked about them.
She thought it might be helpful to have one-on-one with someone and to be weighed every week with someone else watching over your shoulder.
We do already know about nutrition intake (we're professional dieters), but because this offered the personal interest of another individual, we thought it might give us that extra oomph (sp?) needed to stick with it!
Ah well. It's good to check into this stuff:)

susanjoneslewis - 30 Jul 2004 22:59 GMT I hope this isn't offensive to the OP, but I had to laugh when I read this part of your statement. " We do already know about nutrition intake (we're professional dieters)" Something I had to learn the hard way when I first started my new WOE was this a.) wasn't a "diet" and b.) I had to toss out all my old info, preconditioned ideas, opinions on losing weight. Obviously none of them had worked for me anyhow. For me.. and YMMV of course.. I had to start from scratch. Totally relearn things I thought I knew. Toss out all the old wives tales I had heard, all the info I'd been fed over the years or my interpretation of them anyhow. One of the hardest parts of dealing with my weight and subsequent weightloss was learning that for once in my life I didn't know it all. Just a thought.
Good Luck with your journey.

Of course, one of the big motivators about Weightwatchers, LA Weightloss, or any of those is that you have paid good money to join and follow their programme, which you don't want to waste. Another motivator is that someone is going to stand you on the scales each week and record exactly how much you lost or gained, so someone else is going to see if you've been trying or just pretending.
This group can, I'm sure, help with the latter, if you post your weight each week - but you have to be honest! Not because of us, but for your own self-esteem.

GCoggi - 30 Jul 2004 01:51 GMT Hi Mary!
I just read the response from EM. I, too, also worked at LA Weightloss and I can confirm all the advice she gave you! LA Weightloss is a good program but it is high presssure sales and they will "require" that you buy their supplements! I hated that part of my job. I was a nutrition counselor who was given very little training. My main job was to motivate people and I really enjoyed helping them achieve their weightloss goals. I had one client who lost 110 lbs and I was her main counselor. I was very proud of her. I gave her a hug every time she came in! When she reached her weight loss goal, she brought her Mom and boyfriend in to meet me....she thanked me for helping her lose the weight...and I said "Honey, you don't need to thank me,...you did all the work"...and she said...."Yes, but you loved me through it"...I will never forget her words. They brought tears to my eyes. It was clients like her that kept me working there. I would still be there, but they fired me when I was hospitalized with crohns disease. I went to the labor relations board, got my job back, went back to work and was hospitalized a month later...they fired me a second time!!!!!..Said I was "too ill" to work there. I have nothing positive to say about LA Weightloss...I would advise you to save your money and go to Weight Watchers or a similar program where you will get support....that, in my opinion, is one of the most important things. As others have said, you will get the same support here!!!!! Good Luck, MaryAnn
karen t - 29 Jul 2006 16:23 GMT I was looking for reserch on la weight loss as I went yesterday and joined. I do not think it has sunk in yet as I will not actually start the detox till tomorrow. It was exactly the accountability that I needed to lose the weight. I've enjoyed being able to eat out and eat the same foods that I fix for my family. I have lost 13.8 lbs (in just 5 weeks)....I feel like the commercials! :) My mom and I started together, but she has had to take a medical leave for 4 weeks. I don't feel like I'm in this alone because the counselors are wonderful, but if you need some encouragement....I'm here for ya! hehe

I started La Weightloss at 162 lbs and am only down to 150. I did get down to 146 but I am a college student at UNC Asheville and have had complications finding food that I actually want to eat at the cafeteria that fits with my diet. Somehow it seems that La Weightloss can't understand that. I thought they were supposed to be supportive of my struggle with food and making the right choices, especially when I have to eat on campus because I am a resident there. I have had almost no positive experiences with the program. My date to reach my goal was September 6th and lets just say that I didn't reach it. The lady I was working with told me I would have to pay another $132 to continue the program even though I paid for 14 wks of weightloss, 6 weeks of stablization, and 52 weeks of maintenance. So ofcourse I said that I would not pay them any extra money since I have the program and 2 extra diaries sitting back in my room that I can follow. Well last night, about 2 weeks later, I received a call from another lady from the Asheville center telling me that she had my file sitting in front of her and that I am supposed to get free weeks until I get down to my 135 lb goal weight regardless of whether or not I am past my goal date or not. So even though I would rather not see them any longer because I am tired of feeling going in there just to be told that I am not losing weight and being made to feel like I am less than human, my parents paid for the program...a whopping $600 and think I should go get my money's worth. Well anyway, this is my situation with them. I hope that ya'll haven't had the same trouble with them as I have! Good luck and keep up the good work! Ashley

It is the second day of my detox and I am happy to say that I have lost 3 lbs in 2 days. The money was a big deal for me but I am not planning on buying the supplements or the snacks and stuff. I will deal with my own snacks. I saw someone on ebay sells those la lites for a lot less money. You might want to try that. I will be your support buddy, if you'd like. I am in this alone, as well. My family support me but I am the only one dieting. you can email me. evettesmom at yahoo dot com My name is Jennie.. Good luck.

What IS the initial cash required. The thing about weight watchers was that the cash outlay was very little. The ads say you can join for as little as $9/wk is that true?
