If you started very obese, it could be okay.
If you ended up very slim, it was not a good idea, but you may be lucky and now suffer any consequences.

Jamberoo - 29 Jul 2004 23:34 GMT I eat on average 900 calories per day and use aprox. 600 calories in exorcise.
Don't do as I do but do as you need to!!

I already lost my weight, I was simply impressed. My suggestion to you, seriously, is to start eating more, maybe 1900 calories. You can seriously mess yourself up by losing weight too quickly, we just had a thread about it. At least read up a little bit about it. You may end up being very sorry and unable to maintain your weight loss.

If you enter maintenance at a 900 calorie intake per day, It may be hard to maintain long term. Start eating more now to get your body used to the extra. Your metabolism will/should increase as well. I stopped counting cals and just started using portion control and maintain quite well. ((so far)) I recently did a weeks journal and average around 3100 cals per day. Some days I may eat 4200. Some days I may eat 1700.
congrats on your success thus far!!!!

Ignoramus2121 - 30 Jul 2004 04:19 GMT You've been maintaining for how long, about 5 months by now? Congratulations on both great maintenance and on burning so many calories.:)
i who wishes he could burn 3100 calories per day!
Ignoramus2121 - 30 Jul 2004 04:32 GMT Alien, I hope that you do not mind my question, we had a thread here about excess skin that is left, according to some posters, on all people who lose over 100 lbs. Is there some truth to that?

I would say a good 5 pounds of skin in total..(not fat) Its pretty gross really. LOL everyone says. "oh you look great." I just smile and say, "Its and illusion. You should see me naked. But thanks!" LOL I have a little saggin on my inner thighs. But the more I walk and hike the more it seems to be pulling inward/upward.. ?If? I am still maintaining in 2 years I will opt for some sort of surgical alternative. I also must make a point. I see some people say look at my sagging skin under my arms. When in fact there is still lots of fat under that skin. Just pinch it and you can tell. The area at the bottom of my belly, under my arms and the sagging drips that used to be my double D man boobs have practically no fat in between. The skin looks worse when there is that layer of brown fat just underneath.Which can be 1/2 to and inch thick. Or more! When you get rid of that (which is the hardest part) it dont look as bad. Which brings me to another point. When I read that someone got 25 pounds of skin removed after weight loss. And they only lost 100 pounds. I would love to know the fat/skin ratio of that removed.

I would love to know the fat/skin ratio of that removed. Depending on the type of surgery, quite a bit of subcutaneous fat comes out with the skin. A simple tummy tuck doesn't take out a lot of fat, but if you have a torso surgery (affects the back and sides also), they can remove the entire front panel of your abdomen. I saw it on tv once and it they took everything from the rib cage down to the hip in two sections (down the middle) off entirely then stretched the skin around from the back like a jacket. You end up with a scar down the middle and one full circle around your hip area so you still look scary when naked.

This brings me to my biggest beef with the entire Body for Life program. the "look good naked" motto. There's just no way I'm going to look good naked ever again. Not going to happen. Setting it up as a goal is just depressing.

How about "look good in tight jeans"...

Between my gall bladder surgery done the old fashioned way, stretch marks and the remnants of some burns, I was never going to look good. For me, having the torso job would probably *improve* the appearance of my abdomen.
BION, I have seen some BFL pics of women who appear to have an apron, but found a bikini bottom that camouflaged it well. Ok, still not naked...

Jamberoo - 30 Jul 2004 23:36 GMT When I was 27 having a 30" waist and no belly was important to me. Now at 40 in December with 2 young boys my main goal is to live to see them grow up so having some excess skin is not a problem. I have heard of people who have went in to have a tummy tuck and died under the aesthetic... WHAT IS THE POINT OF THAT?
Peace

Assuming your post is not BS (hey, this is usenet...):
At that level of caloric intake, you are probably not getting enough vitamins and minerals and may be doing long-term harm to yourself.
Most folks who don't have an eating disorder would consider a 900 calorie per day diet to be very challenging, if not impossible, to maintain. It's a "crash diet", and not a healthy recipe for long term success.
Your weight loss was about 5 times faster than is generally recommended (most authorities recommend 0.5-1 lb per week - you supposedly lost 4.6 lbs per week). Many people who lose weight that fast also end up gaining it back, because they are not establishing good eating habits for long-term health and wellness.
Was there some overriding need for you to lose weight that fast?

Have you begun plans for a maintenance plan to keep it off? "Fail to plan an plan to fail". It would suck to gain it all back because you fell off the wagaon and binged back the whole way. Figuring out how to maintain it is crucial for you now.
Generally the folks who lose slowest have the best chance for keeping it off. How much of this is because slower means better planned, no one can say. But at least it means the time for you to start planning is now.
Jamberoo - 30 Jul 2004 23:14 GMT Thanx for your positive input.
To be honest the amount I eat at the moment is very OK so to increase to 1900 cals is a bit frightening. I like my self now and NEVER want to put the weight back on no matter what it takes. One other thing. Some body mentioned that I would not be getting the proper vitamins and minerals, I take a supplement every day so don't worry.

Lictor - 03 Aug 2004 11:39 GMT > To be honest the amount I eat at the moment is very OK so to increase to > 1900 cals is a bit frightening. You can still increase in little steps, and see what happens... Like, +200 calories, keep that for a week or two, check how you're doing and adjust... I don't think it would be a very good idea to jump right from 900 to 1900. You're body is likely to be in economy mode, so 1900 might be way to much for it right now... Increasing the intake in small amounts other time might allow it to go smoothly out of economy back to normal caloric needs...
> One other thing. Some body > mentioned that I would not be getting the proper vitamins and minerals, I > take a supplement every day so don't worry. There are supplements and supplements. Some use the cheapest minerals available, and the body has a very hard time using some minerals in some chemical forms. Likewise, the body has a hard time assimilating some vitamins and minerals if you don't eat enough fat and/or eat too much fibers. That's why I think it's always better to get whatever you need through real food that have been available and proven for centuries. If you must take supplements, make sure you use the highest quality ones available, not the cheapest no-brand ones... Also, be careful with overdoses. Some vitamines/supplements are unhealthy in very large amounts (vitamins B, D, potassium, iron...).

Jamberoo, a 5'10" tall man living on 900 calories a day is screwing himeself. I understand your urge to shrink, but you're not paying attention to where the weight is coming from. You're f.cking up your metabolism, to put it bluntly.
You are losing muscle mass, bone density, heart strength. Your skin's metabolic needs aren't being met and you're going to have dry patches and eczema or psoriasis and certainly lose elasticity and the ability to have it recede reasonably.
If what you REALLY want to do is lose fat and fix your metabolism and maintain a healthy weight for the rest of your life then you are going to have to change substantially. Otherwise I'll just wave as you yo-yo past.
Dally, who's lost 70 pounds in 2 years

Jamberoo - 30 Jul 2004 23:18 GMT Please don't worry I have been to see my Doctor since loosing so much weight and he shook my hand and told me that I made his day. I think that if my general practitioner of 12 years thought that my weight loss was OK then it's OK.

You definitely showed a lot of determination.
The real challenge now is in front of you, which is to remain slim for many years.
So, be prepared for it, and one way of being prepared is to learn to eat at maintenance levels.
