Dewolla Stepon - 03 Aug 2004 14:07 GMT
Well, after one week's reflection and some serious delving into Outlook
Express I've decided to come back.  I know now not to share all the details
I had been, and I found a clever way to use OE to my advantage.

So, for all my friends here, I thank you for your kind words and
encouragement.  I had a loss this week (Yay!) and am on track to my goal.

Today is the first day at my new job as a church bookkeeper.  Wish me luck!

This is such a childish response, Ig.  It's entirely uncalled for and just a
prime example of why you're in many people's filters.

Look, she got some very good suggestions, namely to test her blood
sugar frequently.

She became all upset and said that she does not take advice from self
appointed usenet doctors.

Is this rational behavior?

No it is not rational behavior. The rational behavior would be to
check whether the advice makes sense or not.

Accidentally, yes, blood sugar testing is important.

http://familydoctor.org/x6528.xml

`` Every person with diabetes should have a blood glucose monitor and
know how to use it.'' The article then goes on how and when to test,
why etc.

I am not going to tell her what medications to take etc -- there are
doctors for that -- but frequent testing of blood sugar and glycemic
control is the basic strategy to maintain good health. This way she'd
know if her medications and diet are working. Or know when they stop
working, as diabetes is a progressive disease after some point and
requires adjustments in treatment.

If you post how you eat in a diet newsgroup, you might as well expect
someone to say their opinion about it.

I frankly do not think that Dewolla has any sort of legitimate gripe
here, she posted how she eats, she received a helpful suggestion that
was very pertinent to her health, etc. She is not a victim here by any
stretch of the imagination.

Is repeatedly badgering the hell out of someone to the point that you've so
completely pissed them off and made them find you an extreme annoyance
rational?

You were extremely obnoxious in your persistence that you knew what was best
for her.  Rather than treating her like an adult receiving competent medical
care and backing off when she wasn't receptive to your ideas, you just
couldn't give it a rest and made things extremely unpleasant.  All that
matters to you is that you are right and she is wrong...period (in your own
perception).

Not everyone is an emotionally stunted robot you know.

Yes, totally!  We are here to support one another, I think, not to
dictate to one another, and advice that goes against what she was being
told by her own doctors is at best, silly, at worst, dangerous.  We do
not know nearly everything about our fellow-posters, only what they
choose to tell us. Moreover, what works for one might be totally
dangerous for another!

Blood sugar testing is not dangerous to anyone. It may or may not be
necessary, but it is not dangerous, unless you beat someone with it.

I was not the only person who suggested getting a glucose monitor. She
was told the same thing on the diabetes forum, by the way.

The problem wasn't with the advice, it was the fact that you continued to
beat her over the head with it after she acknowledged receiving the advice
because you couldn't accept that she chose to disagree with you about what
*she* wanted to do in *her* situation.

Dewolla Stepon - 09 Aug 2004 18:13 GMT
Jenn, let me just wade back in here to say something.

First, thanks for your (and everyone else's) support and understanding.  It
means a lot.

Second, in response to Ig:  Your blanket generalities do not work.  If you
recall, more than once I have stated I am on blood thinners.  That means
that my blood does not clot normally.  That makes me a chemical-induced
hemophiliac.  I am under doctor's orders to avoid anything which may cause
bruising or cuts.  I cannot shave my legs or underarms.  I have to adjust my
medications even when I go to the dentist for a checkup or a cleaning.

When you say "Blood sugar testing is not dangerous to anyone" you don't know
what you are talking about.  For me, it is dangerous.   Until you have ALL
of my medical history you are in NO position to insist that your advice to
me is valid.  You don't know the first thing about me.

Try to keep that in mind the next time you try to argue or scare others into
following your prescriptions.

I think he feels an urge to point out that he was right.  Ig, it would
be better to try to suppress these urges occasionally.

Sheesh, you're an a.shole! Did the word "support" in the name of
this NG escape your notice? I guess it did. I give up, Ig -- I've
tried very hard to see your good side, but it's been eclipsed by
your need to be right and get the last word about everything. Most
sincere good wishes in your weight maintenance and other endeavors,
but I won't be reading about them anymore -- you're now in my
killfile...

Dewolla, do you know how to put Ignoramus in your kill-file?  It's easy
to do and just announce you've done it and people will make an effort
not to quote his more assinine moments when responding to him.  (I'm
assuming you have him kill-filed so I spared you quoting his snide remark.)

And ditto from me.  I think it's appropriate to take a break from
newsgroups sometimes when they are more frustrating than helpful, but I
also think they are, in the end, more useful than awful.  :-)
