Stopped in after work today. As usual (?) I started out on the treadmill, a
mile and a half including the cool down. Then tried a couple of the machines
that I used before. Still have to work out the amount of weight I put on. I
also tried a couple of ones that I hadn't before. It's going to take a while
to get used to these things.

Tried finishing up with the elliptical, and wow! What  a workout this thing
gives you. Even at level 1, I could barely make it to 5 minutes. Looks like
this is the one I'm going to gauge my progress with. I noticed a couple of
people "walking" backwards on these. Is there any advantage to that?

Dang, I sure wish I could find some kind of trainer or coach in my price
range.

Awww, take US!  Seriously, with some studying at www.ExRx.net you can
get pretty far.  Krista has demonstrations on her website of what NOT to
do and that'll get you even farther.  Then pay attention to how you feel
and that'll get you pretty far, too.

All in all your goal should be to lift heavy things.  Get near enough to
them and you'll figure out how to do it.

Looks like what I've been searching for, thanks. Gonna have to do some
serious looking around there.

This post made me think about my last fitness test.  The woman asked me what
kind of workout I did - I replied that I do cardio and weights.  She
suddenly became very upset that I was using free weights.  According to her
there was no way that I could POSSIBLY know how to lift the weights
properly.  Well, geez, look at my results lady and stop trying to sell me
your personal trainers!  Obviously I'm doing something right!
But, apparently using websites and fitness mags can only harm you...  The
only way to get fit is to spend XXXXXX amount. ;)
Obviously, if you don't know a darn thing about weights and can't access
mags or the Internet, then I suppose spending thousands on a trainer may be
the only way to go.  And of course, if you HAVE the money to do it, then
just go for it.
I'm totally for utilizing the Web and fitness mags.  There's something
satisfying about figuring it all out for yourself.  And don't be afraid to
study others in the gym!

I don't just study others in the gym, I ask them what they're doing
sometimes or why they're doing something a certain way.  I've yet to come
across someone who wasn't willing to speak to me.

*LOL* Apparently, this should also include, "The only way to lose and
maintain weight is to buy a diet.

I've used a trainer for about 9 months now... just 1x a week.  I started out
2x a week for about a month or so.  He watches my form and pushes me to do
higher weights/more reps then I would do w/out him.   He has also shown me
how to use free weights and spots me.  If you can afford it, it is worth the
money to me.... IMO.

It hits different muscles and seems to be more challenging for some people.

I'm going to get bashed for not knowing the technical terms but usually
there is a diagram above the touch pads that shows which muscles are
worked in forward and reverse.  The type I used had several programs
which would prompt for reversing.  One I remember had an interval which
would allow setting separate resistance for the two intervals allowing
the reverse resistance to be less than the forward.  Although this must
have had a better purpose, I used it to break up the monotony and rest a
bit before the next tough forward interval.

Sometimes buying a fitness magazine or subscription can work as a cheap
physical trainer.  Would that be enough advice on a budget?

If it's accurate, dependable advice, sure.

Muscles move levers; muscles only contract.

You get what you (don't) pay for.
