Just today I learned that I have a growing nodule on the place where
half of my thyroid was removed due to adenoma 10 years ago. The nodule
is hypoechoic and is about 1x1x1 cm.

My grandpa had thyroid cancer in 1969, so it must be hereditary. He
says he still has my histology report from my surgery 10 years ago,
it said the adenoma was benign (to say benign adenoma is redundant)

news like this are a great appetite suppressant...

I'm so sorry to hear it! I apologize, but I'm not really familiar with
thyroid problems. What's the next step for you? Do you have to get it
removed and biopsied?

The next step is to do a CT scan and also "thyroid scan" (in the
order, I interpret it as a radioactive scan to see if the nodule
absorbs iodine). As for biopsy, it seems that it is called for, but it
has not yet been ordered.

I think that, for me, the next step is to get a good relevant doctor,
do the scans, and probably ask for the needle biopsy, given that the
nodule is growing and given my past history.

We'll see about removal.

Sorry about this news Ig. I hope it's soon resolved for you.  Being
you, I'm sure you'll be doing lots of research around the issues.

I am going to a radiactove iodine "uptake and test scan" tomorrow, and
have a CT scan on Tuesday...  We'll see how it goes...

Most nodules are not maignant, but, the thing is, this nodule is
growing where the thyroid is not anymore... That's disconcerting.

Likely I will have to have a surgery.

Thank you Gloria.

Well, the nodule seems to be cold, which is not that great, but not
definitive... I will have a CT scan tomorrow, and then, I think, will
need to see a good specialist. It is not a completely run of the mill
situation.

I'm sorry you get to ride the Cancer Scare Coaster.  In another reply
post you mentioned a needle biopsy.  It's good for you to keep
thinking ahead to what's next.
My most fervent hope is that it is once again benign.
In the meantime hold onto your wife and son.

Thank you Annabel. Hopefully it is nothing, only 15% of such nodules
are cancerous.

I'm sure it will be - and I'm equally sure that this is scant comfort to
you right now.  Let's hope they can do a biopsy very soon and rule out
anything horrible.

Ig,

Sorry to hear of your bad news.  The only good thing I can think of is that
the worst possibility, thyroid cancer, is quite curable. Hope it doesn't
come to that, but at least it isn't your pancreas.

That's what I'm thinking.  It's just one of those adventures of having a
body.  He'll live.  Lucky he has health insurance.

What does hypoechoic mean?  That it's hollow?

That's the most likely outcome.

That it does not reflect sound waves from the ultrasound scanner.

My readings seem to suggest that hypoechoic means that it does not
collagen inside.

I don't know yet. I guess that if it grows 2x every year, and is
behind the carotid artery, I do not have much of a choice. That's just
a guess on my part.

Ig my thoughts are with you. I have been through a nodule removal to
have to have repeated surgury 4  days later for a melignant thyroid
cancer. I then had teh radioactive iodine therapy. Currently waiting
for my next lot of testing in september. I know what it is like. Be
strong, continue to feed your body correctly so it is in the best
possible condition to fight. I think that I was at my fittest and
healthiest in about 5 years helped me through a very tough time.

Thank you Michelle. I was sympathizing with you when you had your
surgery, so much, partly for a reason that I had one of my own 11
years ago and suspected that one day, another one might come. Little
did I know that it came so soon (possibly, as we do not know yet what
is the histology or etiology). I appreciate your good wishes, and will
keep trying to stay in the best shape.

Even malignancy, as you know, is very likely to end up well with a
good long term outcome.

My grandfather had stage 3 thyroid cancer 35 years ago, and I am
going to visit him in 2 weeks.

I got similar news Friday when a CT scan for a different purpose turned up
a nodule on the thyroid. One of my friends suggested www.endocrineweb.com.
If you haven't checked there yet, give it a try. It had more information
than anyplace else I've looked so far, and most of the news was good. I
was pleased to see that the usual diagnostic procedure, fine needle
aspiration, is said to be painless.

The same friend pointed out that sudden weight loss can be a symptom of
some thyroid lesions and asked if that was how I'd lost weight recently.
No way. I worked hard for those 28 lbs. and it hasn't been sudden. I'm not
sharing credit with some nodule.

Best wishes,

Paul

Thanks for that website.  I have endocrinological issues (parathyroid and
