Well, I've only been working at losing for about two weeks now but I've
already noticed some positive changes. I've dropped about eleven pounds,
which is a lot for two weeks but I'm sure most of it is water. I feel so
much less bloated than I did at the beginning of the month and my clothes
are already fitting a tiny bit better.

For the last few days I've been just flooded with energy. I found myself
dancing around the house earlier this evening. :)

I've been eating small meals spread out through the day and I haven't felt
deprived. Before I would eat huge portions and then feel bad and go as long
as I could before eating again. Now if I feel hungry I EAT and I don't have
to feel guilty because I know I am eating good stuff in healthy portions.
I'm eating between 1900 and 2400 calories per day and learning how to
respond to my hunger cues instead of cravings.

I've just upped my exercise from thirty minutes a day to forty. I still have
a long way to go and sometimes I still get a little worried that I will fail
once again, but I try my hardest to shake those thoughts and just focus on
getting through one day at a time. So far, so good!

It's that little bit of positive feedback that you get from your body and
your spirit that you have to nurture in the tough times - that will help you
keep going.  It sounds like you're doing wonderfully and you are seriously
motivated.  Keep up the great work and if you need a little help or a push,
just whistle!

Thanks Jenn! I'm sure I'll be needing a push soon. When I have tried to lose
weight in the past my enthusiasm starts to wane around four weeks in. I'm
still honeymooning, so to speak.

I had to respond to your post. When I read it I smiled. The reason I smiled
is because I could read a little of myself in your post when I first
started my new way of living. Its sounds like you are deffinately on the
right track. Leave your past failures in the past. Dwelling on them will
only make your road ahead even that much harder. I am so happy for you as I
type and hope you continue to post your success. Its reading post like
yours that keep me on track. :) Congrats on your pounds lost thus far!!

I am curious if you take regular blood pressure measurements, and
whether thay changed at all lately.

I had a full physical last winter and my blood pressure was normal. I also
had my pressure taken when I went to the emergency room with an ear
infection a few months ago and it was slightly elevated but not out of the
normal range. I've been pretty lucky not to have problems with high blood
pressure. (My family history is interesting: my father, who is thin, has
really high BP and has to take medication to regulate it. My mother, who is
fat, has irregularly LOW pressure and has to take medication to regulate it.
Somehow I seem to have fallen right in the middle.)

Congratulations on the great start.  11 pounds isn't a lot for the
first two weeks, especially when you have a lot to lose - as long as
you don't expect it to continue at that rate!

I know so well what you mean about the extra energy.  IMO this is far
more to do with eating less and better, rather than the actual weight
loss itself at this early stage.  

It sounds like you have a good plan.  Don't think of failure, just
take each day at a time and concentrate on the small goals, and how
much better you feel already.

Thanks Janice. No, I know it will slow down soon. I am determined to lose
this weight the right way.

Absolutely. I'm enjoying it. Whenever I'm tempted to overeat I think about
how much better I've felt these last few days and ask myself if an extra
helping is really worth losing all this extra energy and bounce. And the
answer so far has always been no!

I just wish everyone would give themselves an honest shot at your
apparently sensible calorie-counting / non-deprivation approach before
giving up on themselves and either getting gastric banding or letting
it all go. Eating 2000+ kcal/day is not deprivation!

2-3lbs/week is "slow" compared to starving yourself, but as long as
you weigh less this week/month than you did last week/month, you're on
the right track, and that's all that matters in the long run.

When I was on my strict plan I knew each extra 1000kcal delayed a
whole day's progress. What's the point if you're getting enough food
already? Eat for fuel, eat what you need, not what you want.

Now that I'm a lot closer to my goal I've relaxed a bit, but I can
certainly say being on this side of 200lbs is a lot more pleasure than
what any food can give me.

My mom used to have a fridge magnet with that slogan printed on it, back
during her Weight Watchers days.  I really would like to know what thin
feels like. Actually, scratch that - I'd just be happy knowing what average
feels like. :)

Don't think of how far you've got to go, or you'll give up in despair,
which is what I feel like doing when I think how far *I*'ve got to go!
Actually, it's what I feel like doing anyway, but never mind that now,
I'm not going to!

Just take each day as it comes, and if you have a bad day, so what?  It
just means it will take another day to come off.  And could people
please go on telling ME that, I'm having a "funny five minutes".....

I'm having a bit of a rough day today and giving up in despair seems so
tempting. But I'm not going to either.

Thanks, PL.  Yesterday was definitely not a good day, in terms of food.
Partly I woke up hungry, which I don't normally do.  Then there was a
Residents' Association Barbecue in the afternoon.  If you're trying to
lower the amount you eat, I don't recommend barbecues, because the food
comes in dribs and drabs, and before you know it, you've eaten at least
two more pieces of chicken than you meant to!  Plus it was the middle of
the afternoon, and we had had no lunch, so were seriously hungry!

And, of course, eating in the middle of the afternoon put supper out of
phase, because we weren't hungry when it was supper-time.  And I ended
up being hungry at bed-time and having a far more heavy-duty snack than
I would normally allow myself.  Sigh.

Oh well, today is another day, and I'm well on track so far.  And
although I had not lost any weight at my bi-weekly weigh-in this
morning, I hadn't gained any either.  Shouldn't really weigh myself
twice a week, but I can never resist....

Oh I'm right there with you. I have to really fight hard to break the old
habit of climbing on the scale every morning and letting the number that
comes up dictate what kind of day I'm going to have.

When I decided to change, I *never* set out to lose almost 100 pounds.  
It never entered my head.  It was an exciting adventure to get a new life
where one day I'd see someone rollerblading and think "Hey - I need some
of those!" and then DO it.

That was how I was.  I just figured I'd see what happened, and that
losing even a little weight would be a good thing.  If you'd asked me
then if I wanted to get down into the 140s, I'd have thought it out of
the question -- perhaps not even desirable.  

Maybe I was a little strange in this regard, but I was never all that
unhappy with myself at 260.  I just felt like I'd like to be a little
lighter.  And one thing kind of led to another :-).

BTW, I bought a really nice Liz Claiborne suit today in a size 6 --
80% off the original price.  I'd have never imagined that I'd ever
wear a size 6, either.  (There was an Anne Klein one that I liked a
lot, but the top in the size 6 was a bit snug through the shoulders
and bust, and the skirt in the size 8 was way too big, so I decided to
pass.)

I have ALWAYS believed in this "mind" thing (so to speak) as it IS my
mind which is going throgh the BIGGEST changes now. About 20 years ago
(I was 40) I started losing weight. I just cut back my food by doing
this:
I put the same STUFF on my plate except I ate 1/2 and stopped. I felt
this strength and it was inside my head. I went from 269+ (I had quit
looking at my scale) down 100+ LBS. That was a great journey and after
meds that helped my weight go up and a unchosen sedendary life I gained
about 20 back. Now I'm close to where I want and this took a long while
of getting my head changed back again. Yea, I agree with someone's
statement "thin tastes better than food:)" It's true!! Life is beautiful
when I shop in the regular lady's dept now!! I'm eating when I NEED to
eat. Never getting full is great . I FEEL incontrol PLUS I FEEL THIN
now.

That's almost how I started, Gloria! except I used a smaller plate and
only *took* half as much food.

Can I ask you a rather personal question? How long to lose your weight
plus how long have you maintained? YOUR attititude is really great!! I

Sure Glo - it's in my sig line: it took a year to lose and I've
maintained now for 18 months. I never did anything more important or that
gives me more satisfaction than losing the weight and becoming healthy
and athletic!  It is SO worth it.  You keep it up too!

That's a good way to look at it. I'm trying my best to make this about my
health and living a fuller life instead of the numbers on the scale.

Surgery is something I just never considered. I have nothing against those
who choose it but if it came down to a choice between surgery and staying
fat, I'd choose staying fat. Luckily, I am pretty sure there are other
choices.

Don’t lose those thoughts.  Consequences are a great way to control
hunger, eat healthy and keep treats at the small portions they’re
supposed to be.

I love reading posts like this one.  You're doing fine and have a very
sensible plan in place.  Eating smaller meals throughout the day has worked
for many of us.  It has certainly worked for me.

Don't worry about past failures and just concentrate on your success this
time.

It's helped a lot so far. Keeps me from overeating. If I get a craving and I
know I am going to be eating again in an hour or two, I can hang in until
the craving goes away.
