Saw sleep doc today. On closer reveiw of my sleep study, he noted that
while I stop breathing about 50 times an hour, down from three times
that a year ago, I am getting far more oxygen. That is, even with the
apnea, my oxygen intake is nearly normal.
So I'm off the CPAP machine! (http://www.sleepapnea.org/cpap.htm)
As always, YMMV.

Congrats Kasey! After taking a look at this I'm sure you're happy to be
through with it. I'm sure the sleep doc was very pleased with your
progress.

Thanks, Beverly.
On rereading this, I guess should not assume that everyone knows what
sleep apnea is and the role obesity plays in it.
This is the biggest health improvement I've had since starting this
WOL in October.

Congrats on the improvement!!
Funny you bring this up today. There was a segment on our local (small
town) news about the new sleep clinic at the hospital and how they're
treating sleep apnea. The options they listed for those affected by sleep
apnea were the CPAP machine, surgery, and two other things I can't recall -
but *none* of the suggestions were lose weight. I was appalled and
hollering at the TV. Coincidentally, the woman they interviewed (who is
being treated for apnea) worked at my school last fall as a substitute.
When I mentioned that I made it a point to exercise 30 min a day, she warned
me not to overdo it.

P.S. My sleep apnea cleared up pretty quickly after losing weight too :)

I would be delighted if I was freed from a machine like that.

WTG! Huge health improvement ... apnea is awfully scary.

Wonderful news Kasey!
When my husband was put on a CPAP machine, I thought it would keep *me*
awake. It turned out that I slept much better because I didn't have to
worry about him not breathing anymore.
He lost weight and has been off it over 2 years now.

Same with us. Also, DH used to snore really loudly and now he does
not. The CPAP is a good thing for both of us (as long as we don't
travel someplace without the right electric current :-) ).

My husband could shake the house snoring.

When I was in college, the guy in the dorm room next to us snored so loudly
we could hear him through the concrete wall. He and I were both in top
bunks in our rooms on opposite ends of the same wall and it was as if we
were in the same room. My roommate and I taped it one night and played it
for everyone the next day.

Excellent! My DH uses a CPAP, and it has been a Godsend for him, but
I know he'd be pleased to be rid of it. He's quite heavy, but I have
another friend who uses one for his sleep apnea and he's very thin, so
it's not always weight-related.
