Well, here I am with another monthly update on my road to a slimmer me! I really do appreciate all of you wanting to keep track of my progress. I actually think of you when it comes to making tough decisions about food choices because I don't want to let any one of you down!

This past month has been good, I've been averaging 2015cal/day which is where I want to be at this point in time. My mom came up from Texas a couple of weeks ago for a visit. It was the first time she was able to see her grandson in living color and the two hit it off like gangbusters! We had a good visit, I was even able to visit a couple of buffet-type restaurants and keep my calories in check! I hadn't been to a buffet restaurant since going on the diet and have been very afraid to go to one. Call it a mini-goal!

My Sister-in-law Michelle gave me information on doing stretching and toning exercises which I need to start doing. It seemed this past month there have been too much going on from my mom visiting to fixing up the exterior of our house, there never seems to be enough hours in the day. But I need to make that commitment and start the stretching exercises... (need prayers to help me start and focus on doing the exercises)

I have no idea what I have been doing different but today I stepped on the scale and found that a whopping 18.4lbs have been lost! I don't understand it but the nurse zeroed out the scale and everything so the scale was right. That brings me to my other news: my mini-goal for this month has been achieved! I set a mini-goal to break the 400lb barrier and have smashed it all to pieces! I now weigh in at 393.8lbs! My next goal is to break 100lbs lost by September, that one will be a reachable goal if I keep my weighloss at around 3-3.5lbs/week.

Thank you all for your notes of encouragement!

That works both ways, Matty.  I see how well you're doing and it keeps me motivated to stick with my woe/wol.

Give yourself a pat on the back.  Buffet restaurants can be very tough for people.  It's taken me quite awhile but I normally do just fine at them.  I do have the occasional slip and have a little too much dessert.

My Sister-in-law Michelle gave me information on doing stretching and toning exercises which I need to start doing. It seemed this past month there have been too much going on from my mom visiting to fixing up the exterior of our house, there never seems to be enough hours in the day.  If you find yourself putting them off because you don't feel you have enough time just start with small increments of time.  I don't think there's any law that says you must exercise 30 minutues straight.  You can do it 5-10 minutes a few times a day.

I have no idea what I have been doing different but today I stepped on the scale and found that a whopping 18.4lbs have been lost! I don't understand it but the nurse zeroed out the scale and everything so the scale was right. That brings me to my other news: my mini-goal for this month has been achieved!  As my granddaughters would say "You rock, Matty".   Wow...you did blow right past the 400lb mark.  Congratulations and I look forward to seeing that 100lb goal broken soon.

Maybe I shouldn't point out the "inpsiring".  Oops, too late ;-)  I hope to
be inpsiring someone myself someday . . .

I'm adjusting.  The house is nice but cluttered with a great many unopened
boxes of my DH's books.  Those are for him to open and put up.  I'm so glad
that there *isn't* a good bookstore in town here.  He'll have to go to Del
Rio or San Antonio when the book buying urge strikes and maybe the urge will
pass before he decides to make the trip.  I tell him that he doesn't have to
own every book published in the English language.  That's what libraries and
inter-library loan are for.

I had a bit of a crisis.  One of our cats went missing for a week and a half
and just came back last night.  I did a little bit of comfort eating out of
worry but since I don't keep the dangerous snacks like chips and guacamole
around, it wasn't too damaging.  I had lost down to 174 but all the fast
food I ate while we were between houses caused me to gain up to 180.  I've
already re-lost two of those pounds. I miss having a gym to go work out at
but I'm making myself do 45 minutes a day on the ski machine (going on two
days in a row) and today I also did one of my weight work-out disks.   It
wasn't as difficult as I remembered it being so maybe I haven't lost all the
gains from when I was going to the gym regularly!

Great job Matty, I keep an eye on your progress with some amazement.

I must say though, that at some point it would be worthwhile to slow
down your weight loss a bit. 3.5 lbs per week is pushing it and there
is no reason to be in a great hurry to lose weight. This would be a
small adjustment to your plan.

How would I accomplish this? Increase my calorie intake? Right now I am at
2000 calories daily during the week and 2500 calories daily on the weekends.

I was planning to increase my calorie intake in October/November for the
winter...

Thanks for the encouragement and advice!

I'm curious as to why you plan on increasing the calories for the winter.  I
find I'm less active during the winter and usually have to keep an eye on
the calories.

Your current plan seems to be working fine.  Your weight loss rate is still
less than 1% of your total weight and considered very reasonable for your
current weight.

I figure with walking in the cold weather with a coat, hat, balaclava, &
boots that I'll be expending more energy, plus the extra calories will help
boost my metabolism and cut down on the chance of plateauing(according to
information I've gathered from previous posts - if I am wrong please correct
me).

I plan on cutting down my walk route by 1/4th when the snow flies(we have
heated sidewalks downtown that cut off 3/4ths of the way of my current
route), but the extra weight of the winter clothes should make up the
difference.

Wow...heated sidewalks!  We certainly don't have those around here.  IIRC
you live much farther north than I do.  I'm in southern Ohio.

Check out this link:

We've won a couple of 'beautiful downtown' awards because of it. It's nice,
but kinda of a pain right now, they're in the process of extending the
heated sidewalks past my office building so the road to work & sidewalks
will be torn up for a couple of months. Should be done by late October (I
stress 'should')...

Something tells me you'd like the original Holland too.  As I'm sure
you know, it's about the most bike-friendly country on this planet.
We took our bikes when we went on a camping trip round the whole
country, and there are just miles and miles of cycle tracks.  This
compares very well to Britain, where they are very poor despite some
efforts having been made in recent years.

But the difference in Holland is that cycling is in the culture, which
means things that happen here, like motorists parking on roadside
cycle tracks, are not "acceptable".  I guess I'm lucky it's only a
short ferry journey - just talking about it makes me want to go again.

Well...yes, I knew that.  That's why I referred to the "original"
Holland in the first sentence of my message, and said "too" meaning in
addition to the one referred to in the original post.

Or have I goofed - was there a Holland, Michigan before the
Netherlands were there?  I just assume most names in Europe predate
those given by settlers in the US.

This is getting too complicated for me:)

I would love to ride the original one<g>  I've been looking at a tour

loved it.

Here's the trip.  They seem to offer this trip every year.

I would eat slightly more, of the foods that you like and that are
rich in nutrients... Say, 300 calories more per day. It would make
your dieting a bit more pleasant, not that I suggest that it is not
pleasant for you...

Since, when you walk in snow of some depth, and with clothes, you
spend more energy, I would tend to agree with your thinking. See if
your changes lead to positive results, if yes, they are good
changes...

In my opinion, you have plenty of wiggle room for changes.
