Egg beaters -- nice Protein supplement

Ignoramus29553 - 29 Oct 2003 19:38 GMT Someone asked a few days ago for a nice tasting protein supplement. Yesterday I was shopping at sams club and I saw "egg beaters". Supposedly they are egg whites, with very little other additives that appear relatively harmless. Probably preservatives.
A pack has 4 cartons, each carton has 8 egg equivalents.
That stuff has no cholesterol (in eggs, cholesterol is located in the yolks) and very little fat. Essentially it is protein from eggs with water.
I am not big on supplementing my diet with protein, as I think that the theories that gorging on protein will make your muscles bigger are bunk. (as long as you eat enough protein that is). But I was very curious about that product as it seemed that it is protein without saturated fats etc. And I just wanted to try it.
So I bought it and drank a little. It tasted like egg whites (duh). Pretty bland taste. I want to try making a big scrambledd egg type thing with it tonight and will report results.
As far as I can see, unless you are allergic to stuff, this is maybe the safest protein source ever.

<digression> I think it is gonna be home-cooked surf'n'turf for birthday dinner tonight. (and my very, very pleased with my wt loss) DH is an incredible cook when he has the time. and he said he'd "make" the time tonight. I am Officially 38 today. I had told myself that I was going to have this problem beat by 35 but then I had my little 'oops baby S3. but by golly-wally I sure got it licked before 40!!! I am actually looking forward to the next decade coming up.

Ignoramus29553 - 29 Oct 2003 20:37 GMT I love steaks too, however the meat sticks between teeth, they have a lot more calories, etc. Plus I am not on Atkins and I am not lowcarbing. Egg beaters can be a better low calorie source of protein than meat.
I have had great success losing weight without lowcarbing, so please no advocacy of lowcarbing, okay?
Happy birthday.

We don't want to push LCing on you if you're not interested, but your post came to both alt.support.diet and alt.support.diet.low-carb. I suspect that's why you're getting LC responses.

Egg Beaters have been around for decades. I would imagine most everyone else has already tried them.....

I've seen them discussed on this group more than once before, and they sound useful. Anyone care to email me some:) janice

As soon as we figure it out I'll try the egg beaters <G>

Okay, I e-mailed the doughnut holes. It is up to you to mail the doughnut part. I can't be expected to do EVERYthing.

Can you estimate how much is 2 pounds of protein and fat?
Is that like a typical steak and piece of ham and 4 bacon strips?
Just curious!

I actually use a combo of egg whites and real eggs with yokes and all to make omlettes and scrambled eggs. You still get the yokey taste eggs are supposed to have. And for those that are inclined to watch cals as well as carbs..it's a good way to knock off 50 - 70 cals if youre eating 3 eggs at a sitting. My rule: 2 real eggs to 1/4 cup portion of eggwhite/eggbeater.

Anne - 29 Oct 2003 21:56 GMT Egg Beaters work great for scrambled egges, omelets, etc. They are easy to keep in your freezer or fridge for when you need them.
I cannot imagine in a million years, though, *drinking* Egg Beaters out of the carton! <bleah!>

Egg Beaters, IIRC, has some garlic or onion flavor added. Some other common brand of egg whites in a carton does not, so it's better for adding to shakes. I think it might have been called Better'n Eggs.
I keep Just Whites (powdered egg whites) around as a protein powder.
