I am new to the group and am classified as a prediabetic.  I would really
like to try leaving out all starches as for years I followed a diabetic
diet which had 2 starch choices at every meal and for 3 snacks.  All I did
was gain fat even though my weight at 155 ibs. and 5'5''is not all that
bad I have a body fat % of 38-40%.  Interestingly I am neither an apple or
pear shape.  I am in my fifties.  I would replace the starches with extra
vegies, and have protein, fat/oils, fruit and dairy.  Anyone tried eating
this way?

Yes.  When I first started dieting, I cut out almost all simple carbs like
white bread, pasta, sugar, potatoes, rice, etc.  I replaced these types of
foods with fruits veggies and whole grains.  made a HUGE difference in
cravings and kept me from the peaks and valleys of rapid blood sugar change.

Of course, the bottom line is you have to consume less calories than you
burn - so you need to track you calories (try www.fitday.com) and shoot for
8-10 cal x lbs of current body weight.  Also, exercise - cardio and
resistance training, will make a big difference in your weight.  You don't
want to become a skinny fat person - someone who has lost alot of weight,
mostly muscle, who still has an unhealthy level of bodyfat.

What were you doing for exercise?  Exercise will help hold
off diabetes and if you do go over the edge, exercise is
necessary as part of the treatment?

I have to eat that way in the sense that i can't have any dissaccharide
sugars which would also be in refined products, flour, pasta, bread
etc. i eat fruit, vegetables and nuts for carbs and use some honey but
use dairy with little lactose. It's The Specific Carbohydrate Diet.

I always wonder how people know they're "prediabetic".  We don't
usually have access to tests that tell us things like this here in the
UK.  I'd be really interested to know how you came to know this, what
tests you had, and what the results were.
Just curious, and convinced that prevention is better than cure.

there are inexpensive tests such as glucose tolerance and h1bac or
some such. you can even buy a home kit on ebay, if I am not
mistaken. I would check it out if I were you.
