I weighed in on Friday and I hit my -50 lb mark which was an amazing
feeling but at the same time gives you a false sense of accomplishment
imo. I battled the desire to nibble Halloween candy all weekend combined
with a schedule that didn't allow me to walk even one mile. I hate this
like this!!
I have to put ME first and somehow I am letting that slip. How do others
battle this scheduling issue with b/f, job, kids, holidays etc?

I didn't stray too far except for the fact of not getting my walks in so
I am hoping this week will be a successful productive week. Hope the
same for ya'll :)

Congratulations on -50, Susan.  This is a big deal!  I don't think
it's a false sense of accomplishment.  You're not done yet, but you've
made huge progress.  It proves you're doing it right, and should
reinforce your confidence that you'll get to your goal.

I don't know what to say about schedule stuff.  I don't have kids,
which helps, and my job usually -- though not always -- allows me some
scheduling flexibility.  We can all only do our best.  If your weekend
was that busy, I expect it involved a reasonable amount of physical
activity, even if it wasn't formal exercise.  It all helps.

Our approach to Halloween candy is to buy something we don't like.  DH
shopped this year and bought a big bag of little packets of mini Sweet
Tarts.  Neither of us was even tempted.  I'm taking the leftovers to
the gym tomorrow for the trainers.  (And since we don't have kids, no
one is bringing any other candy home.) (Anyway, if we did have kids,
they'd be grown up by now :-) .)

I was glad I did it, for myself, but didn't particularly care for the reunion.
There were only a few people I talked to. Most of the rest I didn't recognize.
And no one mingled much.

But hey! *I* looked great. :)

Congratulations Susan!  50lbs is a significant milestone and only one of
many I'm sure you'll see.

Finding time for exercise can be tough with family, job, etc.  I joined
Curves for this very reason.  It's my commitment for at least 3 weekly
workouts.  Can you include the kids on some of your walks?  I often include
my granddaughters on my bike rides.  It's a chance to spend time with them
and get my exercise.

Thanks Beverly,
My 10 year old son walks with me almost everyday so it is already a
family affair. Just this weekend it was difficult because we had so many
commitments going on with my b/f's family and the holiday. Also it was
opening day of deer season here (whitetail) and it is always a big event
and we spend alot of time outdoors here on the ranch with family and
friends - which in a way is "exercise" but it's not my walks. I am
finding if I don't make the time to walk I blow it off and I know that
is unhealthy thinking on my part. There are several reasons why I have
not joined a gym/curves/etc. First being that I live in the big middle
of absolute no where and the closest Curves or a gym is over 20 miles.
Second reason is frankly.. I am too damned trifling to pay the money for
a membership. lol
Anyhow I am just going to have to schedule better to make sure that
nothing interferes with my evening walks. No if's and's or buts.

Congrats, 50 lbs is a lot of weight. Try picking up one of your 50 lbs
feed bags and walk with one for a little while. Maybe then you will
appreciate how much easier your life is getting. You are getting
within a much healthier weight range also. How does one manage
family/boyfriend etc? I do not have a boyfriend, but I am married and
I try to exercise before big demands are placed on my time. That means
early in the morning and then walking back from the train. But it is a
constant work to get the time I need. Now that I am in maintenance
exercise takes me a little less time though.

I am glad that you did not give up when you hit that plateau at 219.

Thanks Ig. I am really glad that I haven't given up either, there has
been alot of times when I sure wanted to. But the way I feel everyday
keeps me going. I never ever want to go back to that way of life I had
before. I reflect on that sometimes and wonder why the heck didn't I do
this years ago?

to think about it, you are done with half of your weight loss!!!

The second half will be more pleasant, as you can actuyally enjoy
walking, you can do more stuff, etc. It may take more time
however. Try to slow down your weight loss as you get close to the
normal weight interval. (starting with bmi 26 or so)

When you are done, it will seem like it did not take that
long... After 2 months of maintenance, I now look back at my weight
loss phase and it did not take that much time! It seemed like an
eternity when I was done with half of what I wanted to lose.

Well, first I ditched the bf!  Just kidding....  My gym also had childcare,
so I take my daughter with me, and I *try* to leave work at work when I
leave.  Holidays I am deciding to approach completely differently from now
on, for stress reasons...  I'm doing very little shopping, and focusing on
my immediate family only.  We will be doing lots of crafts this year, and
other group hands on activities.

Susan Jones-Anderson - 03 Nov 2003 20:26 GMT
LOL, I tried! remember? He came back hehe. I think you have the right
approach to the holidays determined. I am also not going to focus on the
shopping and extended family. This year we are going to do a simple
gathering for close family. Try to keep to tradition and remember what
the holidays are all about.

I took a similar approach to the holiday shopping a couple of years ago.
I have teenage granddaughters and it was a big headache trying to buy for
them.  I now give them a small gift such as perfume and a gift certificate
to the local mall.  We all get together a few days after Christmas and
spend the day shopping and then out to dinner.  They love it as they can
get what they want.   My adult kids have expressed a desire to be included
in the after holiday shopping trip so this year I think I'll just give them
a gift certificate and really cut down on my shopping.  This leaves my
daughter who lives at home, my sister, the 3 youngest grandchildren and the
cat on my holiday shopping list.

About ten years ago, I had possibly the worst Christmas ever.  The cath lab
where I worked was owned by three sets of practice groups and they all had a
Christmas party and then there were two new docs in town and there was a
reception for them that I had to attend.  I had a botched root canal.  My
kid got chicken pox (a really horrible case) and if you know anything about
insurance, all the patients wanted to squeeze their cath in by the end of
the year because their deductibles had already been met.  The tree went up
on Christmas Eve.

I was exhausted, cranky and miserable.  The next year it occurred to me that
although I really enjoy the people that I work with, they are not family.
Although some social obligations are expected, it doesn't mean spending your
entire evening there.  Chances are very few people would have noticed my
absence and almost no one would have been offended.  I got to thinking about
clothes.  Do people really notice if you wear the same thing twice?  I can
shop so much and then I hate it, especially at Christmas time.

Our big family  holiday is Thanksgiving.  Usually, the Friday after
Thanksgiving, I make soup with left over turkey and entertain a few close
friends. For the past nine years, Christmas has been low keyed and subdued.
Mom hosts Christmas at her house and everyone brings something and we just
hang out doing the family thing.   This year, I plan to take off after
Thankgiving and spend as much as the winter as possible at my BF's hunting
camp.  I am able to be selective about the projects I take on and will focus
on regulatory stuff that does not require me to be onsite as long as FedEx
is running.

Work is rough.  I left a huge company almost three years and could not get
into getting another job which is sort of like being married to someone who
doesn't owe you alimony if you divorce.  I work for mysef now putting in
long and hard hours but I design my work to fit my schedule.  It is very
risky going out on one's own to work (especially a single Mom) but honestly,
the people that I have seen fail are those that think working at home means
being able to watch The Price is Right.

It was when I worked for a large corporation that I really began to enjoy
waking up very early in the morning.  I am all alone to read newspapers,
work crosswords, drink coffee and slowly ease into my day.  Most days, I am
at my computer working by six.  In the afternoons, I have time to pick up
groceries or tend to personal business.  I try not to schedule meetings
before ten (which is NOT always possible) and when I have very early travel
days, I use the travel time to think about stuff and make plans for the
future.

Every day in my work as a consultant I see people make poor career decisions
and people who are so much more talented than their job requires.  Security
is good but even Enron folks weren't protected by their huge corporate
shelter.

How do others  battle this scheduling issue with b/f, job, kids,
holidays etc?

Hey Susan, Good work! Congrats.

As far as ME time, I'm lucky to have a workplace that allows and
encourages employees to take advantage of the U's wellness program. I
work out at work, so I don't have to worry about a lot of the issues
that others face, except...

DD's volleyball season begins this week, so I'll have to start skipping
the PM Pilates classes. My girls were sorry about that one:  I'm pretty
serene and wiped out on class nights, after an hour of lifting and
cardio, and an hour of pilates, so I'm not my usual psycho-mommy self. I
hate to be rushed or hurried, and like to have my schedule down
pat--works at work--never at home.

I'll have to find something else--maybe I'll just attend VB practice and
run, jump, and spike with the teenyboppers.

You can burn off a lot of calories shagging balls :) One of the women on my
team *never* retrieves balls that go past her so I end up doing it just to
get a chance to run across the gym and move.

Re: 50 lbs Way to go!  Re: exceptions For me, no excuses.  No birthday
cake, no candy, no skipping exercise except for illness.  I'm on the
"tough love" program - and frankly, I  don't feel deprived.  When I
eat my oatmeal with peanut butter I think how much money I'm saving,
what good nutrition I'm getting, and how yummy the food is.  I don't
mind if my wife is eating a fudge brownie with ice cream.  I will
admit that I can't stand being too hungry.  I don't know how anyone
could stand being hungry for more than a few days.  I think any diet
that involves being hungry will not work longterm.

Actually, you should take a day off of exercise weekly to allow your body to
get neeed rest. To exercise each and every day is a quick way to sustain an
injury.

Woo hoo Susan!!!  It *is* an accomplishment even if it isn't the end of the
road yet.  DH bought me beautiful two toned gold earrings to celebrate the
first 50 :)

I don't have kids and yet I'm still having a hard time balancing it all.  I
try to look at the upcoming week and everything that has a scheduled time,
including work, and then I figure out when I can fit in workouts.  One of
the things I've done is change my time for going to Curves to first thing in
the AM which means getting up an hour earlier.  Sometimes that's the answer,
getting up an hour early, but it does lead to sleep deprivation at times.

Holidays are another story.  I have a lot of parties to attend and plan to
go to most, but use strategies like eating before hand and dress in
something fabulous and tight (waistband reminder not to overeat).  Every
year I used to bake cookies for all of my students.  I teach over 200 kids
and gifts are prohibitive.  This year I'm making trail mix and putting it in
clear plastic cups with colored saran wrap and a ribbon with personalized
labels I'll print on the computer.  I already have a day planned for this
and DH is going to help.  Family meals will be easy because I'll be
recovering from surgery at Thanksgiving and at Christmas my entire family &
DH's all understand about my WOE and are totally supportive.

Congrats again!
