Eating my words...I joined a gym!

Many times I've said I'm not a gym-type person. The truth was, I never found
one that fit me.

I think I found one tonight. I've been wanting to learn how to rock climb
and do some mountaineering for a while. So I surfed for some info and found
a place in SF called Misison Cliffs.

I went down there after work tonight. It is the most amazing gym I've ever
seen!!! There are climbing walls everywhere. There is also lots of weight
equipment and cardio machines of all sorts.

But the main draw are the climbing walls.

The initiation fee is small and the monthly fee is quite reasonable. I had
lots of questions for the staff. The main focus is climbing. The other
equipment will make it a nice balance. The customers were normal looking
folks; no bimbos or attitudes.

I'm going for my first Belay class this Friday night. This is a real step
forward for me. Pretty soon you'll see me hanging off sheer cliffs. : )

Oh wow - I'm so jealous...

Weve got a rock wall at the gym, but nothing like you've explained.   WOW..
that sounds just too cool.

It really is cool...just like being on the side of a mountain. Check out the
website. There are a few of these gyms around the Bay Area.

Now I'm even more jealous.  And BF is sitting here next to me saying "and,
to think I was getting excited about climbing the wall at our gym"...
DAMNED!!

I have to ask - what does their membership cost?   (you can email me
privately if you aren't comfy with posting it).

No problem. $125 initiation fee and $59 a month.

I was surprised it was so reasonable. The only hesitation I had is that
you're on your own with the weight equipment (and there's quite a lot of
it). But I figure I've done well on my own with dumbells, so I'll just
investigate a bit further on my own and find out what equipment will help me
the most.

The climbing lessons are all free for members, and I can't wait until
Friday.

I.m hoping this will also lead me to meeting people into backpacking and
mountaineering for next season.

I'm still drooling after last night's info.  I went to DH and showed him the
website.  He said we're not moving to California.  LOL

You sound so enthusiastic and that's just wonderful.  We don't have many
rocks to climb here but rock walls are very popular.  Enjoy your lessons.
Maybe you could share a tip or two.

I bet you'll find that there are lots of people in the weight room who
will be happy to offer advice.  If you approach someone with a
question (between their sets, of course :-) ), most will be flattered
and take some time to help you.

Congrats Martha!  The place looks fantastic.  You'll have to let us know
how it goes.

It was funny. I told the woman who showed me around that one of the reasons
why I wanted to do this was I was afraid of heights. She said she used to be
afraid of heights and now she's only afraid of things out there (outside the
gym). : )

I've never really been afraid of heights but I have tinnitus and mild
vertigo which often affect my sense of balance.  I've had episodes since
childhood and have learned my limits.  I can tolerate heights if I'm seated
and feel secure. I can ride roller coasters but not climb the steps to the
high slides at water parks.   I'm afraid rock climbing is out of the
question

Here at Cornell we have what is billed as "the largest natural climbing
wall in North America." The Wellness program is sponsoring a bouldering
class, but--like many others--I'm too chicken (and broke) to try it.

Let me know how you like the rock climbing--I might--eventually--give it
a try.

Thanks, everyone! I'll try it later this week.

Good for you!  It's times like this I almost wish I lived in civilization
again cause that sounds like an awesome place.  Let me know how the rock
climbing goes.  DH said I'm not allowed to pick up any more new sports
except for XC skiing this year, but there's always next year :)

And did you ever think you'd hear those words come out of your mouth???  I'm
tapping my foot saying "SNOW already!  I want to try the skis!!"  My
snowshoes are all dusted and ready.  I have skates if it doesn't snow but
just gets nice and cold.  (This is the kid who hated every minute of every
gym class in her life)   It's so cool to be healthy<s>

A-men!  We had snow on Tuesday and it's still here today but not enough to
do anything with except make things kinda white.  It should make the race
interesting on Saturday since it's a cross-country 5K run.  I despised gym
class and now I wear a t-shirt at work that says Get Yourself Moving (GYM)
courtesy of one of the phys ed teachers.  As a matter of fact, I'm covering
one of his classes in two weeks while he does a favor for me during my prep
period.  I do love being active.

BTW, are you enjoying the northern lights?  I hear they're putting on quite
a show out there.

OMG  it's spectacular!  I've seen the green/blue ones before bit this is the
first year I've seen the rosy red ones.  My friends and I have a sort of
Northern Lights Alert System - whoever sees them first has to phone the
others.  Doesn't take more than 2 words and we're all out the door into the
magic.

There were so many reasons we moved here - the northern lights were a
surprise bonus.

Martha, I'm so glad you found somewhere you can get into the rock
climbing, as I remember you saying you wanted to do this.
I can't even bear to watch people doing this IRL, but starting in the
gym seems a good way to get into it.
Let us know how you get on.
