I can't quite believe it, but I did eat to plan yesterday (if you don't
count one slight timing error of postponing afternoon snack until after I
lifted.  If I lift with food in my stomach, it can make me real burpy and I
don't feel very well).  The bad thing is I awoke at 2:00 am with a very
conjested chest, and here I thought I was coughing because I inhaled some
chalk at the gym, and I was so very, very hungry.  I had a great deal of
trouble getting back to sleep; I am sure that had I had one or the other
problem that it wouldn't have been as hard.  Two of them at the same time,
though, and I was double whammied into a few hours awake working at my desk.

BUT, the good news is I didn't eat, the scale showed it and I feel very smug
about it.  I still feel like garbage though.  What really makes me mad is
that this weekend my husband's boss is treating us to dinner (ANYWHERE!!!)
and the theatre.  If I am still slugging through this cold on Saturday, I
will be quite upset.  Think positive.  Think positive.

Any suggestions for dealing with middle of the night hunger?  And please,
don't say just go back to sleep.  I am a lousy sleeper under the best of
conditions.  Saying "Just go back to sleep" is right up there with "just
don't eat that".  I wish it were that easy.  Elise

On those rare occasions when I wake up in the middle of the night and I'm
starved I'll usually grab a handful of grapes.  If grapes aren't available
I'll go for one slice of lunch meat or a cheese stick.  Most of these are
below 100 cals and seem to satisfy the hunger.

How about you get a jump on your water intake?  I sometimes take two
fibercon and a large glass of water before bed if I'm feeling like I need
something in my belly.  (It has positive effects the next day, as well.)

I do pretty much the same thing, but with sugar-free Citrucel.  Since
I have trouble eating a lot of fruit and veggies, I sometimes need the
added fiber.  And a big glass of this makes you feel full.

But, Elise, if you are hungry in the night, eat something.  Something
like yogurt might be good, as it's easy to digest.

I often awaken in middle of the night (several times) and I TRY to
visualize myself skinny! It gives me a real high. I see myself in a new
out fit that looks sheek LOL     I LOVE to imagine !!!!
I WORKS for me!

DH is a middle of the night snacker for the same reasons - lousy sleeper.  I
sleep though natural disasters, but I also get up one or two times a night
for potty visits and have no trouble passing right back out.

Try a glass of water or something before you eat anything.  Wait a few
minutes and if that doesn't do it, try something else that you like to
drink, then make sure you have a small amount of something you can eat set
aside and only eat that.  For example, I put aside some fruit from my daily
"allocation" if I know it's going to be a late night and I might be hungry
before bed.  When I was completely on shakes, I once stayed up until 1 or 2
AM and I was pretty hungry so I hit into the next day's shakes (which I
pre-mixed and kept in the fridge).  I didn't miss it the following day.

I got the munchies this evening though I had a huge dinner and was not
physically hungry at all.  It was enough though to bring me into the
kitchen.  Drank fruit2O (step 1 of plan to avoid emotional eating) and left
the room.  If that hadn't worked, I would have made a cup of decaf coffee
with sf syrup or herbal tea and gone into the guest bedroom (has a comfy
couch) with a book until I fell asleep or decided that I really was actually
hungry and would have grabbed an apple or a slice of soy cheese.  I was
supposed to be in bed an hour ago but I'm a little stressed about work
tomorrow because I have my very first student teacher, which is probably
what is making me want to eat in spite of the fact that I'm practically
bloated from the dinner I ate.

It's not easy, but it's manageable if you plan ahead.  Sticking to the plan
is always another story and I understand where you're coming from.  Hope
this helps.

I have to eat a little something with carbs before I go to bed or else I am
up all night.  Usually, a small piece of bread and cheese works well for me.
(One piece of lite bread and one piece of 2 percent cheese is less than 100
calories).  Also, are you sure it is hunger pangs and not indigestion or
something?
