treadmills and catching up

The place I stayed at had a fitness room with treadmills so I finally used
one for the first time since I started running.  It had some sort of "level"
that determined the speed and I was wondering on most treadmills if this was
MPH or some other type of measurement or if it varies based on the model?
The grade control was interesting.  The first day wasn't that great of a run
because I'd set it too low and spent the rest of the time playing with it to
get it right while trying to run, plus the TV's were distracting.  The
second day I went manual and just changed the speed as needed.

I admire you guys who do treadmills.  It was harder than running outdoors
because of the need to keep a constant pace and how much time it took to
adjust the speed faster or slower.  Mentally it was different being indoors
and "going nowhere" but I could get used to it.  Physically, it was more of
a pounding on my back than running on blacktop.  The faster I ran, the
louder my steps got.  I need different shoes for this type of running.

Anyway, I practiced a 5K and broke 30 minutes, so hopefully I'll do the same
in the real thing on Saturday.  My typical 5K run times have been 31-32
minutes when I run on my own. I'm going all out since it's the last race of
the season and I haven't raced since July.

I have many posts to read and I'm working on catching up.  Also trying to
get ready for next week's festivities (work and more travel) and spend some
quality time with DH (tomorrow night is dinner out and then grocery
shopping).  Off to bed now so I can get to Curves bright and early.

It depends on the treadmill.  The one I use at 24 hour fitness is a
life(something, I think lifestep).  You can adjust the speed based on miles
per hour.  You can walk 1 mile in 20 mins on level 3.  I don't run or jog, I
just walk on Hill Mode.... where the incline varies during the workout.

I haven't been going to Curves that much (2x this week) since I joined 24
hour last week.  I've been there 5 out of the last 7 days, using the
exercise bike, treadmill and weights.  I've been seeing a personal trainer,
who monitors everything I do and shows me how to use the machines as well.
It doesn't hurt that he used to compete in body building competitions and is
really cute.  He is concerned that I am not taking in enough calories to
fully recover from vigorously working out with the weights, so he isn't
working me as hard as he normally would.

I am *considering* making this the last month I do the HMR fast and increase
my calories a bit, while incorporating HMR shakes and soup into my daily
diet.  I am not sure yet, I have not made up my mind.  So far, in 3 months,
54 lbs gone.

Do what you're comfortable with.  The Healthy Solutions (1200 cal) plan does
incorporate 3 shakes with food, 2 entrees & 5 v/f  Instead of entrees I
can't remember the combo though I know it includes 5 v/f, a protein, a
grain, and I think a fat and a dairy but your dietician is the best one to
know this.  The exercise is key.  I'm down to 2 shakes and entrees optional
(total maintenance).  After grocery shopping tonight and a day of cooking
tomorrow, I'll have my own "entrees" in the freezer and ready to go for the
next week and a half so the HMRs will be for emergency and travel only. Keep
up the good work.

Good luck with the 5K Saturday.  I hope you have nice weather for it.

My treadmill at home is a NordicTrack with ifit.com compatability.  It has
some pre-loaded running programs but I seldom use them.  I just use the
manual controls for speed and incline.  Since I normally watch tv while I'm
on it I don't want it surprising me by changing speed and incline.  It must
be the difference in treadmills as to how long it takes for them to react to
speed changes.  Mine seems to respond quickly to these types of changes.
I find I'm able to run longer on the treadmill than I can outdoors.  I think
it's because I'm forced to keep up with the pace or be thrown against the
wall behind it<g>   Mine often becomes a clothes rack in the summer and only
gets regular use in the winter.

It's supposed to be in the single digits tomorrow.  Fun.  I won't care after
the first half mile.

I am definitely not buying one because we have no room for it.  I am going
to join a place that has a few so I can run through the winter but
fortunately it also has other equipment like an elliptical and stair machine
so I can vary my workout and not pound myself.  Plus there's the pool...

I love the treadmill but I typically walk very fast with the grade set on
seven to ten percent.  For me, running either outside or on the treadmill is
hard on my knees.  When I was a member of a gym, I had very specific
treadmills that I liked.  Then I bought my own.  They are sort of like cars.
You get used to the one you drive even though someone may have a better
machine than you.

The noise, especially in those little hotel gyms is distracting.  It is
especially bad when there are several people in there.

I cannot watch anything serious or read anything that requires critical
thinking but I do watch inane sit coms or read 'women's magazines' while on
the treadmill.  At the gym, there was one room that just had about five
treadmills.  I always used a walkman with the earbuds that fit inside the
ear canal.  When I complain about being hard of hearing, you will know why:)

Good Luck at Curves.  A treadmill is a great alternative to running outdoors
when the weather is bad or hot or cold or if you have allergies like me:)

Hiya Jenn,

There's no wind resistance on a treadmill, so your actual race time may be longer.

That's what I do except the fan is behind me......  Damn I hate being
dyslexic.  I get everything backwards.

But during a race I have other people to try and keep up with :)  My goal is
to stay with the pack as long as possible.  The wind has been rather
horrible the last two days though.  I guess we'll see.
