Haven't been around much, but wanted to say HI, I've missed you all. I've
been walking every night after work. This week I put in (so far) a total of
12 miles. I'm slowly upping my miles. This week, I alternated 2 mi. then 4
mi. then 2 then 4. My muscles were screaming, but now they seemed resigned
to the torture. :>
It is VERY cold here (in the 'teens) so I bought lovely, warm pants, socks,
a hood/mask thing that makes me look like a "cat burgler"--what else? I'm
toasty-warm. The stuff was expensive, but I bought top quality. I compared
the things I ended up buying to the cheaper models and these were truly
warmer and seem more durable. Meanwhile, I'm making do with last winter's
coat. I couldn't even get it zipped up last winter. Now there's enough room
inside for two people....
Also, more good news....I finally broke through another wicked plateau. I
dropped 3 pounds after not being able to lose anything for almost a month.
Phew!
Tonight, going out for Middle Eastern food--hoping I don't order anything
too fattening, but I'm already planning on having lots of leftovers to take
home, because I'm used to eating so little for dinner, I'd never be able to
finish the huge portions they give you in restaurants.

It's good to hear from you; I'm glad you dropped in! Sounds like you have a
number of weight-loss successes under your belt. Um...well...so to speak.

Thanks, 'wings. :) I was good last night and didn't eat too much. Had lamb
shishkebob and rice, and a salad. The food was marvy. They had a funny belly
dancer. She was funny because the restaurant was very tiny and narrow and
she had to wiggle around dodging the waiter and people coming and going. I
thought she was pretty good at it, though. It almost seemed like a new art
form.

Hi Cat! It's just as cold here and I agree with you that quality is worth
the price, especially when it comes to keeping warm. I couldn't use last
winter's coat cause it was a size 28, but I found a great full length down
coat with a hood good to -20 at Land's End for only $98. Also got an LL
Bean Thinsulate Anorak for $79 (a gift). Both are very toasty and the down
coat is great with skirts. Turns out that normal misses sizes cost less
than womens sizes.

Your coat sounds wonderful, Jenn. That gives me some idea of what might be a
good buy (and places to buy) when I get a winter coat next year. I saw a
nice parka for $300 at REI, but it wasn't that warm. I thought that was a
lot of money to spend for something like that. Your coat sounds much more
practical. I like the idea of the longer length, too, because I always have
a problem keeping my legs warm.

The coat is great on the legs, especially with high boots. I can't believe
how toasty it is. I have yet to find another down one for under $100.
The anorak is great for sports because it's easy to layer. The only thing I
don't like is that they changed the style again and there is no longer a way
to cinch it along the bottom, just at the waist. It is long enough to
comfortably cover the butt though so there won't be drafts going up my back
on the ski lift. However, if I was going to downhill ski with real
mountains and do it regularly, I'd buy a high quality ski jacket. What I
have will work for the occasional skeeter bump skiing we have here in the
midwest and for XC skiing.

Good to hear from you Cat, and glad things are going well. Sharing
your winter coat with another person could be a good way to keep warm,
I hadn't thought of that:)
Congratulations on breaking the plateau, and on the walking. I walk
regularly and managed to fit in a 10 mile walk earlier this week, but
finding the time for this length of walk is sometimes a bit difficult.

Wow, ten miles! That's very impressive. The most I could ever do was 5
miles, and that messed up my hips. I seem okay at 4 miles, though, so that's
my limit for now.
How long does 10 miles take you?

Well, since you asked, there's nothing special about me Cat:) It's
just that walking is one of the things I've loved to do all my life
since I was a child and lived in the country. Even when I was older
and weighed in the 233s it didn't stop me doing 15 miles in a day. I
think it's a case of something you enjoy for itself being much easier
than something you feel you do because you should be!
I belong to a walking group, and DH and I also walk a lot - a day's
walk would be anything up to around 15 miles, more usually around 12.
This takes up most of the day with getting there, stopping to eat a
picnic lunch and so on. Lovely!

Very cool Janice! I never did 10 at one time - my best was 8.5 once. It
was an early Sunday morning walk and I was *starved* when I got back home.
Just got back from my favorite 4.75 walk. Really had to put on the layers.
(note to self: even if the temp isn't low enough for the long johns, wear
the wind pants!!!)

<waving> Hi Cat! Keep up the walking - it WORKS!!! and you know what
else? It won't be long before your muscles feel *wonderful* from walking.
Good job at the plateau busting.

Thanks, Snugs. I'm loving this walking. Did another 4 miles yesterday. Even
though the weather is cold, I'd much rather walk in the cold than in the
high temps we had last summer.

It was never hot enough for me to sweat outside this past summer - not one
day. This year i've only worked up a sweat on my treadmill. It was
glorious outside today - 28 degrees and sunny. I did 5 miles.

Hi Cat,
Glad to see you've been able to continue the walking even with the colder
weather. I've always loved to walk in the evening when it's snowing. I'm
hoping for some snow around Christmas so I can walk around the neighborhood
and enjoy the decorations for the holidays.
