A thought on chocolate cravings

crafting mom mentioned that she sometimes has chocolate
cravings. There is "baking cocoa" for sale at Sam's club, which is
basically just ground cocoa. Because there are no cheap components
added (dry milk and sugar) it is kind of pricey, about 8 dollars per
pound. On the other hand it is a pure product.

I wonder if anyone with such cravings could just make a drink with
that pure cocoa and see if the craving goes away. I do not have
chocolate cravings anymore, otherwise I would try to do this
experiment with myself.

Ig, you mean a drink like --- let me think -- HOT CHOCOLATE?  :-)

Hot chocolate = unsweetened cocoa (about 1 tablespoon to 1 cup milk),
milk, sweetener of your choice

Pretty much, sans the sweetener. I am just interested in finding out
if the craving is for sweet chocolate as opposed to just cocoa. I
could finance this clinical study by giving $8 to crafting mom if she
tries it.

Way ahead of you.  I like unsweetened chocolate, with no sugar, no
sweeteners.  Stuff that everyone else would make a pucker face at, I
actually love and enjoy.  THAT is not what I crave during *my* period.
It is chocolate covered almonds.

Where do you buy unsweetened chocolate?

I would like to buy some but could not find any. The "sugarfree"
chocolate all has sweeteners that I do not care to take.

I would very much like to eat something from the chocolate food group,
but without sweeteners and dry milk.

Bakers brand unsweetened chocolate squares.  Ingredients pure chocolate.
In the baking section of my supermarket.

Yep.
I often make my own unsweetened chocolate almonds.  I melt a square over
some almonds, freeze to harden, and then eat.  THAT is how desperate the
chocolate almond craving gets before my period.  So no, it's not the
sweet that I crave, but in a pinch, I'll take it.

Bakers is the cheapest chocolate you can buy and I think it tastes like it.
I prefer Valrhona, Ghiradelli or Schaffen Berger myself.

Once you try the better chocolate, you'll wonder why you waited to long. : )

I've tasted "the better chocolate".  But I am still easy to please.
The Bakers is what's *available*, and I'll take it.
Should all those exotic kinds be equally as available, I will choose
them.

OK, cool. Sorry, sometimes I don't stop to think that others can't get what
I can get here. Enjoy!

Actually that sounds good.  I put unsweetened cocoa in my coffee sometimes
and don't always use a sweetener with it.  But melting unsweetened chocolate
over nuts could be a nice treat, or maybe as a dip for fruit on a special
occasion or when a craving hits.  Fortunately I really haven't had PMS for
months but my cravings were always for the salty sweet combo, not
necessarily chocolate.

Check the baking aisle for both unsweetened chocolate and unsweetened cocoa.

Thanks jmk and crafting mom, I will check. I saw "semisweet" chocolate
and such, but that is not what I was looking for. Will check again.

Check for the blue colored box of unsweetened chocolate squares.
I agree, the semisweet is not what you want.

The ingredients should say simply: chocolate.

Appreciate your help... Somehow I suspect that such stuff is not sold
in the grocery store where I sometimes go, but I will doublecheck and
maybe try another store.

I mentioned that it is chocolate ALMOND cravings.  When it's just a
chocolate craving, trust me, I eat half an UNSWEETENED chocolate baking
square (I like those - I don't need no steenkin drink) and it will
satisfy the craving.

However, like I already mentioned, I simply eat the chocolate covered
almonds in the 4 days prior to my (irregular, unplanned) period, and on
the day of my period's arrival, the craving goes away, and I actually
abhor the thought of chocolate or almonds.  Both are very high sources
of magnesium, which sometimes women need more of during their period.
It satisfies my craving in a way which does NOT interfere with my
regular way of eating, and like I mentioned, I am starting to lose the 5
pounds I gained over these past 2 months.

It's a woman thang.  My body knows what it needs and will not shut up
until it gets it, LOL.

I was just wondering if you've ever considered getting the depo shot.  I've
been using it for years, and have only had a period maybe twice since my 6
yr old daughter was born, due to letting my shot lapse.  I LOVE DEPO.

I HATE DEPO. I had the shot for six years--the last year the side
effects really caught up with me. Was not pleasant. But I loved not
having my period.

Just curious - what side effects did you have?  I have none...  I guess it's
another ymmv.

It took a while to catch up (or for me to notice), but I started feeling
more angry/aggressive/bitchy, starving when I got my shot, and
suffered--much to my DH's chagrine--loss of libido and was as dry as the
sahara. I normally wouldn't share such info, but after talking with
other woman, I found they were feeling the same things, but didn't know
why.

My doc said it may have been the combo of the Depo and the inhaled
steroid I take for asthma--steroids can enhance the effects of hormones.
I'm now taking a BC with estrogen, and it has helped a lot--with
everything.

And yes-YMMV--my sis would never give up her shots, come hell or high
water.

I had the shot and had my period for 3 straight months along with hormone
induced anxiety attacks.  It was awful.  No thank you.  Haven't tried it
again since the weight loss and can't take the pill because of edema (sp?) -
severe water retention.

The chocolate I eat does have sugar and other additives in it, but it has a
proportionately high cocoa content (72%).

A half of an ounce leaves me completely satisfied.

It's my compromise.  I'd rather have a half an ounce of real dark chocolate a
day than several ounces of nonfat, artificially sweetened chocolate pudding or
frozen dessert.

Chocolate, _good_ chocolate is one of those things that is so enjoyable for me
that totally giving it up was a nonissue.  Compromise and have less, sure.  But
give up? No.

That's the way I feel. I have a couple pieces of hard candy or chocolate
before a workout; I get a sweet fix and work it off.

Well, I usually indulge in my chocolate fix at night.  What I do is buy a
Caffarel 72% cocoa chocolate bar.  Cost Plus World Imports has them for $2.49.
There are 6 rows of 4 squares.  I eat a row of 4 squares at a time.  The bar is
3.5 ounces, so a little over half an ounce a serving.  It's about 100 calories
and about 5 grams of sugar.

I get quite a few calories a day.  (My limit is 2500 at my current weight, I
try to stay around 2300 as a happy medium.) That bit of chocolate is pretty
negligible.  It's not even 5% of my total daily caloric intake.

It certainly satisfies me and I have no need for other sweet treats.  Some days
I will melt it in a cup of milk and have cocoa. Most times I just savor it as
is.

The same amount of cheap milk chocolate doesn't satisfy me.

I tried chocolate with less sugar and even with no sugar, but it had a very
pronounced coffee flavor to it.  Maybe not the flavor of coffee itself, but it
was very coffee-ish.  And I cannot stand coffee.  Haven't been able to enjoy it
for a long time.  This is the one option that's mellow enough to actually taste
_good_ to me but be strong enough to satisfy with just a little bit.
