Weird morning scale fluctuations

I weigh myself at the same time everyday, and record a "number" weekly
(Wednesdays). Today it was acting very screwy-- first it said 114.4,
then 114, then 113.2, then 113.6, all in the span of 5 minutes or so
(all I wanted to do was double check the reading, but then it kept
saying different things). After I got out of the shower 15 minutes
later, I thought I would see if anything changed, and it still said
113.6, and then a little while later (before eating) it said 114 again.
For the past couple weeks, it said 113.4 everyday without fail. About
three weeks ago, it said 114 in the morning. What would you assume
here? Would you interpret this is a gain? Or not, since it fluctuated
so much in that period and the scale has read 114 before? Perhaps it's
my floor, as the tiles are grooved and uneven, but I try to put it down
on the same place everyday and always make sure it's not teetering. Or
perhaps it's the fact that I hadn't gotten rid of all of yesterday's
food, or my stomach was having some bloating or gas issues that caused
it to be so variable? I'm new to the scale thing and I don't know how
to interpret fluctuations like that.

That's interesting. My scale seems to start showing higher weights
after shower runs for a while. Perhaps the sensors inside are
influenced by humidity. There is some inaccuracy in all scales,
though.

We all have normal fluctuations of weight, so comparisons of weight
between different days are not saying much. As you said, weight of
food ought to play some role in that, among other things.

My normal daily fluctuations are about 0.5 lbs, probably because my
day to day eating is consistent.

Sara,

Try weighing something with a constant weight(a 5 lb. bag of sugar, a
gallon of water (8 lbs.), a 10 lb. dumbell, etc.) and watch it for a
couple minutes. If it shifts like your results did, maybe it could be a
side effect of barometric pressure on your digital scale?

Given your past trouble with this scale, I would interperet it to mean you
are likely to weigh somewhere between 105 and 125. If it matters, perhaps
it's time for a new scale.

No no, this is a new one! My old one was analog and this is digital.
It's one of the WW ones that measures body fat% and water% by sending
something through your body or whatever.

Have you tried stepping off, letting it re-set, and then immediately
stepping back onto your scale?

Try that 3 times and see what happens.  I have an older Tanita bodyfat scale
that's accurate to 0.2 lbs.  When I do the step-off, step-on test it almost
always shows no more than a 0.2 lb change in readings, and almost always
records the exact same weight twice out of the 3 weights taken.

If you try this with your scale and any two weights are more than 0.2 lbs
apart, or if you don't see the exact same weight 2 out of 3 times, I would
have to assume that your scale is defective.  Try this test on a hardwood or
linoleum floor to rule out the possibility that it's caused by the bathroom
tiles.

FWIW - for weight recording, I weigh myself more than once until I see the
same weight twice (typically, this is on the 2nd or 3rd weight).  This
becomes my "official" weight for that date.

I think I did that this morning and it showed 113.6 at least twice,
because I only remember both 114 coming up once and I weighed myself
like five consecutive times. It might have just been a fluke or the way
I was standing.

isn't weight supposed to fluctuate throughout the day? and i hear showers
are supposed to change it too--but in the same 5 mins? i am stumped...
i recently got a body fat analyzer thing that does the same thing--the
readings keep changing, but stay in the general range; it makes me wonder
about the accuracy of things

I would assume that you're driving yourself crazy with numbers. You are
doing great with recording your weight once a week -- just look for the
general trends so that it doesn't become such a numbers game. I am a little
curious -- since you have described yourself as underweight, what makes you
want to post to ASD? I am only asking out of curiosity since I believe that
you are certainly welcome here if you want to be here.

I don't know if you remember me from earlier, as Sarandipidy. I posted
when I wanted to lose weight and I came here for advice often. Then, I
lost more than necessary. Anyway, I do like to post here for nutrition
advice and everything. After all, I'm still on a "diet" (try watch my
refined carbs and junk food) and once I gain a little, I'll be trying
to maintain it.

Well sure I remember you! I didn't realize you had changed names -- I can be
quite dense in recognizing when someone has changed screen names (except for
our battery-obsessed troll :-) -- so thanks for letting me know and
congratulations on your maintenance -- you are a great example to follow.

You're only fluctuating within one pound. That's just about as accurate
as those things are going to be.
First of all, you're weighing yourself too often.
Secondly, the lowest number is ALWAYS right.

Of course!!!!!  All upward moves are mere blips.  All downward trends are
entirely accurate, absoutely failsafe and completely due to our own hard
work!! :o))
