Two pounds per week, that is.

[insert evil maniacal laughter]

Before photo: http://techmart.com/~cubit/11_2001.jpg

Current photo: http://techmart.com/~cubit/Cubit187.jpg

Chart: http://techmart.com/~cubit/Chart61.gif

Today's chart (above) shows a 2.14 pound per week average.  Fitday shows the
entire diet from November 2003 to March 2005 at 1.78 pounds per week.

My original goal was 165, but I'm now planning on 156.  I have lost about
125 pounds, and have about 31 pounds to 156, or 22 pounds to the original
165 goal.  My lifetime peak weight was 328 fully dressed on a friend's
bathroom scale.

You look about 15 years younger.

If I remember your height correctly, your goal weight is quite
sensible. Congratulations!

Good job Cubit.

I can't recall if you have been doing any lifting.  If not,
I think it will help you overall (it certainly has helped my
wife and I.)  If so, keep it up.

Have a great weekend.

Interesting, same height as me. My original goal was 175 pounds
(starting weight 248), but I've revised that downwards to 165, as I'm at
177 now and there's no way 2 more pounds is going to make enough of a
difference ;-)

It will be interesting to see how I feel at 165. How did you select 156?

My doctor suggested it, and it sounded like a good number.  I can remember
being around that weight when I was about 20.

I have read in CRON groups that the best life expectancy is with a weight at
a BMI of 18.  However, in our obese society men who are too slim look like
they are ill.

I suspect that my lower belly bulge will be hard to remove.  There might be
a case for dropping to around 137 to presumably remove the bulge, and then
regaining weight back up to around 156 to look healthy.

Time will tell.

I can't even remember when I was around 177 ;-)  I would have to guess
sometime in high school. I was extremely thin up until around 7th grade,
when we moved to Maryland from western New York, into a much more rural
area with fewer kids to play with. I imagine the decrease in activity
led to the weight gain. Plus an increase in eating. My mom says she can
remember when I wouldn't come home for lunch because I was too busy
playing outside. Surprisingly, I am actually finding that happening
today. Well, not the playing outside part, but too busy doing something,
and then not realizing until 2 or 3 in the afternoon that I'm hungry.
It's nice to let my stomach set mealtime, not the clock.

Life expectancy was one of the major reasons I decided to lose weight,
and re-start loosing weight after I let my loss lapse. I just keep
reminding myself that there are extremely few fat old people. (Old
meaning > 90 years old) You don't seem to make it much past your 60s
being overweight, if that far. I think that genetics may set a maximum
age you can obtain, but what you do to your body can take years off that.

> I suspect that my lower belly bulge will be hard to remove.  There might be

That's an interesting idea. You don't think maintaining around 156 would
*slowly* cause loss of the belly?  I'm having a difficult time
visualizing myself at 156, let alone 137. I'm at the point now where I
am only thinking ahead around 10 more pounds of loss at a time. It's
entirely possible I'll have to end up around 156 as well. When I started
at 248, I figured 175 would have to be thin enough. Now I realize 2 more
pounds is not going to remove the belly, as well fat from the other
areas where too much remains.

Problem is, wouldn't your belly just come back first? Or not go away even at
the low weight, so you're a stick insect with a belly?

You can minimize the problem via proper weight training and bulking/cutting
phases.

Sure.  With a proper weight training routine and a diet designed to put
weight on, you can cause the gain of muscle and fat, with the focus on
maximizing muscle mass and minimal fat gain.  But you will gain some fat.
After a while, you switch your focus.  You keep training with weights but
your goal is now to lose fat (maximize fat loss) while keeping muscle
(minimize muscle loss).  So you now must restrict calories (LC  is good for
that) Yeah,  you may lose a bit of muscle, but you won't lose all of your
muscle gains (unless you employ a retarded training protocal) but you will
lose the fat.  Hence, the overall weight gain over time will be muscle, not
fat. Thus, no big belly.  It is the type of routine commonly employed by
bodybuilders, but without the extremes they apply (you don't get nearly as
big, no drugs, no insane eating, etc.).

Well, I haven't got down to goal weight yet - I'm 5' 7", and goal will be a
BMI of 25. There's about 10lb still to go. I now have slim everything except
this belly - I've dropped 10 clothes sizes up top, but my waist is still
over the obesity limit at 90cm. I weight train 3 nights a week at the
moment, with 3 nights cardio (salsa dancing is a new thing : ) plus walking
10,000 steps, and the weight is still going down - but not off my waist! I
know adipose tissue is a particular problem for diabetics, although my blood
work suggests that's pretty well under control; I'm beginning to think I'm
going to have to put up with looking 8 months pregnant... OTOH, maybe a bit
of patience would work wonders, never my strong suit... I also think I need
one more hike in my thyroxine levels to get to my optimum level, which may
also help.

Start thinking about a BMI of 20 if you want to lose the gut.

Of course you'll have to eat less.

Chris, in helping yourself you devised Diet Sleuth, something simple
and useful to help others. I tried Fitday for a short time and beat a
path back to Diet Sleuth because it is not obsessive or complicated.

It is nice to have had even a slight connection with someone for so
many years on the Internet as see how  they helped countless others.
I believe DS has been my weight loss buddy since 1996.
Have you made it available for the PC yet?

Hi Carol,

Thanks for the kind words. Diet Sleuth actually started as a program for
my wife, who wanted something easy to use.

Unfortunately, there is no success to report or show.  In fact,
I actually went backwards and regained all of my lost weight and
then some over the past 4+ years.   So, if you want to see where
I stand, have a look at the July 1998 photo when I was at around
458 lbs.  Blect!  :(

Well Done!

Im totally amazed at the photos, they are very impressive.

Can you tell me by how much you decreased your food consumption by eac
week.  And how much are you consuming now??

I'm very interesting, because I have tried everything, I weigh abou
210 lbs and my target weight is about 150lb, and the no-weightloss i
incredibly depressing.

I would appreciate your help/advise very much.

Cheers,
