I've never hit one but my DH has hit 2, both on busy roads with oncoming
traffic. I've witnessed many car-deer collisions and it's not pleasant for
anyone. On Thursday night, two cars had a head on collision on the main
road near my house - one driver swerved to avoid a deer. Both drivers came
out without serious injury due to airbags but the fire dept said neither
would have survived without the airbag.
I once had a deer coming toward me from the left and slowed down and braced
myself for the impact. Lucky for me it decided to jump the hood of my truck
and was going fast enough to clear it. Oh, if you know you're going to hit
something and have an airbag, try to slide your hands to the lower
quadrantsof the steering wheel. It's instinct to tense up and sometimes the
airbag impact can break your arms if they're in the way.

<ALL GOOD STUFF SNIPPED FOR BRIEVITY>
One time my ex-wife and I were driving down the road home and there was
this bloody roadkill I slowed down and avoided. My ex asked what it was
and I said it as an opossum.
She actually asked "Is it dead?" and I replied "no, it's just playing
dead."
She laugh/cried and then punched me in the shoulder.
Served me right for trying to interject a little humor into roadkill.
One of my hobbies is listening to the wide-band scanner. I hear
roadkill comms all the time. And if you call the game commission fast
enough and get permission, you get to scrape it up and have it for
breakfast, lunch and dinner. No nutritional labels on those, afaik.
Have a nice day,
Andy

my mom had a colleague who hit a deer. i don't know how fast she
was going, but apparently she hit the deer and knocked it down in
the road, and before she could brake, ran over the deer. ew.

i've heard about the arm breakage thing. painful, but i'd
imagine it's better than being dead (you know, having never been
dead before).

Most of the time it's not the initial driver that runs it over but the cars
directly behind it or the ones coming from the other direction. I stopped
to help a woman who hit one this fall (worst time because of rutting) and
the animal was not dead. We couldn't get it out of the road before more
cars came and a panel truck finished it off. In a way that was a blessing
because the police took a long time to get there, neither of us had a gun in
our vehicles, and it would have been illegal for either of us to shoot it
and put it out of its misery.
I still get very sad when I witness these things or even seeing the dead
deer on the side of the road though I did get some great photos of a bald
eagle gutting a dead deer once.
