gym ramblings

rambling #1...  some doofus put 100lb plates on the leg press machine and
didn't have the decency to remove them when done.   When I got there I tried
to find someone to help me get them off - but no guys were around and the
women were all old.   So, I skipped that and worked on other areas.   Idiots
and morons in the gym...

Rambling #2...  I observed tonight on the elliptical.  It appears that it
doesn't really matter what level of resistance or speed I go at on the
elliptical, it calculates calories burned at just about 100 cals per 10
mins.   This is an observation I've been noticing over time.  As I gain
strength and endurance and increase resistance and rotations/min I still ony
get 100 cal per 10 min.  I find that a bit odd.  I'd think the higher
resistance you've got, the more calories you burn.  Likewise the faster you
go, the more you burn.   oh well - its not that I am calculating calories
burned as an endall beall.

Rambling #3...  Tonight I noticed I wasn't as strong or had quite the
endurance as usual.   My legs got jitter pretty quick during the weight
workout and my endurance and heartrate went skyrocketing during cardio.
Then I remembered - I didn't eat my usual pre workout snack.  (something as
simple as a handful of trailmix or a piece of cheese or something)...  Big
difference there.

Rambling #4...  Post workout stopped at the grocery to pick up a few things.
Checked my BP and pulse on the machine.  Pulse was 120 still.  BP was
109/72.   Well, no wonder I was a bit lightheaded.  :)

The things the mind thinks about during a workout.  :)   Off to get some
food.

Lots of people leave the 75# plates loaded on the leg press at our gym.  I
can see where that would be a problem for some people.

My elliptical at home lists approx 100 cals per 10 minutes too.  There is no
way to enter in a weight so it pretty much says the same thing whether
you're 130 or 200 lbs.  I haven't experimented with the resistance since
today was the first time I paid attention to it.  Changing the incline
didn't have much effect but I'm also thinking that the incline on an
elliptical isn't that big of a deal.  I didn't think it was all that much
more difficult as it went higher.  Oh well.

I guess I could have just been an a.s myself and just pulled the 100lb
plates off and let them drop to the floor and leave them there.   Maybe that
would have made a point - but doubtfull as the a.s who put them on was
probably already gone (must'a been a 6pm guy..  one that goes right after
work or something).

I can change the weight and that hasn't made a difference.   Likewise the
incline or the rsistence doesn't appear to make a difference.  Granted, I
havent' tried large weight changes (like 200lbs vs. 100lbs)..  I'll have to
go enter into calorieking or something.   I'll also have to check my r-bike
and see how it works w/ weight and resistence, I've never really paid
attention.

I caught on tonight as I enter in the usual program I have usually done but
increased the level from 5 to 8, which during the hill climb sessions the
resistence went from 25 (level 5 max) to 35 (level 8 max) and I think in the
30min workout it showed I burned 5 more calories yet I know the resistence
was higher as well as the incline was higher (which allowed me to lean
forward and target the butt muscles more, so I liek that)

Anyhow - just random ramblings.

Chris - I live in retirement capital.   When I say old..  I'm not talking
50's or 60's (that's young around here).  I'm talking 70's +

My dad & stepmom live in Jacksonville, FLA and he'll be 84 this year.
:) I talked to them yesterday but they were too busy on their way to
yoga class. They're more active at their ages than people 20 years
younger.

Next month, they're taking a cruise from London to NYC on the Queen
Mary II. I asked them if they could smuggle me aboard.

Yeah, there are plenty of active older folks around here.   DH is always
amazed when he gets his a.s whooped in tennis by some 70something guy.
Although the majority he doesn't like playing with because they play these
slow lob games, there are the rare few that are still fit and active as a
30something.

My grandparents are approaching their 90's and still travel and have such a
socially active life that I have to book time to see them.   My other 93yr
old grandma still lives by herself on the island and is still fairly active
with church, chior and other things, although she is slowing down more and
more these days.

Yes, the very same! At least his money is going towards a great trip.
He deserves it. Eleanor, my stepmom has been a very positive influence
on him.

He still loves to travel to Mexico and eastern Europe, because he can
bargain there. He loved Turkey because of the cheap prices. And he is
so good at haggling.

He sounds very cool, Martha.  I was so pleased when I learned to bargain
at yard sales, moved up to flea markets and then antique shows.  It's
fun!  Like our calorie budgets, we pick what we *really* want to spend
on.

I'm saving a few calories for a mid-winter Tropical theme party tonight.

That's just an excuse. You know there are other exercises that will work the
same muscles as the leg press machine.

Sorry for the inclearity...  I still did work on my quads.  I used the
level leg press machine instead as well as others.   It was my lower body
workout day, so I did what I could with alterative equipment.

Isn't that what they pay the kids in the blue shirts to do? That and
wipe down the equipment???

we don't have any of those at our gym...  There is a 60yr old, 90lb lady
who is the "equipment instructor" (seriously, she's skin and bones and is
there instructing people how to use the machines and proper form)...

I don't know what the days are like - I only go in the later evenings.  :)
