Body fat % "Ponderal" vs Weight Waist

I just went to a site that calculated my body fat, and one method
(Ponderal Index) had my body fat at three times the other (waist
-weight).

What gives? Anyone aware of these methods?

Could you post the link?

Interesting...thanks for the link.

I'm not sure where they get that formula from, but you may want to compare
it to the "Navy" method for estimating body fat percentage.  The Navy method
was developed by the US Dept. of Defense, as part of their personnel fitness
evaluation program.  They needed an easy-to-administer way of estimating
body fat percentages, and they did quite a bit of research to back up their
approach (your tax dollars at work).

The Navy method is built into my WeightWare program (you can download a free
30-day trial version), and is available on some websites, including:
http://www.he.net/%7Ezone/prothd2.html (just ignore their "ideal" body
weight, and their recommendations for diet).

It says I'm either 33% or 8%... it can't tell which.  My practiced guess
is that I'm at 23-24%.  Last caliper test was about 4 months ago and I
was at 27% then if I recall correctly and I've lost quite a lot of fat
lately.

So, my conclusion: it's pure bullshit.

Hmmmm...mine showed 15.6% and 13.3% on that page, both of which are in the
ballpark.  According to the Navy test, I'm at 15.2%, and my Tanita says
15.5%.  But, I agree that it's only a rough estimate based on BMI, and the
fact that it doesn't consider age or gender makes it very suspect.

FWIW, I've seen the research that backs up the "Navy" method, and it seems
reasonable to me (though limited to military-aged adults).

The Navy method says my BF% is 28.6, and this site says it's 23.6 or
10.7, when I enter my measures in metric units. When I enter them in US
units, it says 24.3 or 10.4 - so one value is up, and the other down.
That can't be right!

based on my own knowledge of my bodyfat and measurements and using other
sources for finding body fat % - the Ponderal Index appears to be pretty
close to the true figures where the waist weight is way off.  (Waist/weight
had me at 2% bodyfat.  Uh - there ain't no way in hell!

I think the Ponderal figures is just BMI dressed up.  It's only
measuring height and weight and gave way too high a number for me.  Bear
in mind that I'm an unusually muscular woman at 165 pounds.

I also noticed it neither asked gender nor activity level.

Smacks of BMI to me.

I would not consider a "body Fat" calculator that only bases its
measurements on weight and height or weight and waste as a good standard
way to measure anything.

Even the more traditional bf% measurments have their own room for error and
I can do 4 different types that are easily accessible and come up with 3
different answers that are off by up to 5 percentage points difference (22%
- 27% range)

The types I'll use are
1.  tanita foot scale at home
2.  caliper - 3 and 7 site tests
3.  tanita bf analyzer at the gym (includes foot and hand contacts to get a
better full body reading)
4.  various websites that use tape measurements, height and weight.

Hey, thanks for all the input.

I think what I'll do is just keeping working my program on a day to day
basis, and next time I move to a lower pants size, I'll give myself a
pat on the back.
