Study: Obese Salespeople Face Discrimination in Sales Industry
InsideINdianaBusiness.com Report

3/23/2005 3:22:37 PM

A study conducted by the H.H. Gregg Center for Professional Selling at Ball
State University found that discrimination against obese professionals is
rampant in the sales industry.

The study found that obese salespeople were less likely to be considered
for quality assignments even when their performance and qualifications were
the same as someone of a lesser weight.

Ball State University Press Release

MUNCIE, Ind. – In the eyes of many sales managers, employees of ideal
weight are more qualified to work the best sales territories while obese
sales people are relegated to the worst areas — if they are hired at all,
says a new study from Ball State University.

A survey of 122 Midwest-based sales managers, directors of sales or
business owners found obesity-caused discrimination is rampant in the sales
industry, says Ramon A. Avila, director of Ball State's H.H. Gregg Center
for Professional Selling, who co-authored the study with Shaheen Borna, a
marketing professor.

"Our findings support the proposition that obesity is a factor when
assigning territories, which is the fundamental management activity in the
industry," said Avila, who is also the George and Frances Ball
Distinguished Professor of Marketing. "Obese salespeople were less likely
to be considered for quality assignments. Even when performance and
qualifications were constant, sales managers are likely to discriminate by
weight. While it may not be conscious, it still exists."

In the study, managers were asked to assign new employees to territories
based on an information sheet and two versions of a photo of the employee —
one at ideal weight and the other obese. Both male and female candidates
had the same facial shots and clothing, but computer morphing added pounds
to create an "obese" person.

Sales managers were informed that two territories needed sales people. They
had the option of rejecting the candidate or allowing the person to be
assigned to a sales territory out of his or her control.

The study found managers:

--Were less likely to assign an obese person to one of the two vacancies

--Were less likely to hire an obese woman than an obese man

--Were less likely to assign an obese woman to the most desirable
territories

--Were more likely to assign people of "ideal" weight to better territories

The study also found that managers with 10 or more years of experience were
less likely to assign or hire an obese person to fill one of the vacancies.

"Sales managers in this research project, and in most recent studies, have
shown less of a tendency to discriminate by sex," Avila said. "Sex
discrimination has received much more attention and is much more likely to
be included in sensitivity and diversity training. The time may be right
for more attention to obesity in these types of training programs.

"We also found indications that obesity discrimination is more likely to
occur when women deal with obese women," he said. "Although the social
identity explanation for

this phenomenon is theoretically elegant, sales managers and higher-level
managers must acknowledge and develop ways to deal with this real and
potentially sensitive problem."

Avila said the study pointed out that experienced managers, who were less
likely to assign obese people to vacant territories, also need to
participate in such training programs.

Of course, fat people are discriminated against. Especially if they are
women!

Get over it or lose weight!

I think your brain is too weak and fragile to be out by itself. You
must be one of those dime-a-dozen idiots.

(The first 4 posts in this news group are about weight, at 3:30 EST on
3/27/2005 ?)

Anyway, the "lookism" goes farther than weight, companies with a sales
force discriminate on anything and everything related to appearance.  I
can tell you from experience that both Computer Associates and Eli
Lilly hire mainly "attractive" people as sales reps., for example.  Not
just "not fat" but actual Barbie and Ken lookalikes.

The same thing goes in all facets of customer interaction.  You never
see a fat hostess at a restaurant like Friday's (insert bland corporate
restaurant name of your choice).  You never even see a male.  It's
always some 21 year old hot chick.

Some qualities are necessary for doing the job, for example, when you
call a company to buy something you never get someone on the line with
a speech impediment.  Although some accents might as well be
impediments.  But one's weight has nothing to do with one's ability to
sell and one's appearance has nothing to do with one's ability to show
someone to a table and hand them menus.

On this Easter Sunday for my fellow Christians - why is Jesus always
portrayed in the movies as a physically attractive person ?  He was
probably a skinny, dirty, short guy with a scraggly beard.
Corporations have idealized him into a (sometimes blue-eyed !) surfer
dude.  Does it make a difference that the word of God has to be
delivered by someone physically attractive ?  Would we Christians be
less willing to accept Jesus if he looked like a Jewish vagrant, which,
arguably, he was ?  What if he had a deformity, like a hairlip ?  Would
we say, no thanks, I'd rather go to hell than follow a messiah with a
hairlip ?

Especially in the US we place far too much stock in appearance and
especially in people's weight, and esp esp on women's weight.  Like
when Jessica Simpson first started out and Sony told her to lose
weight; she was beautiful and normal looking before she lost the 10
pounds.

That's really true. Go to the mall and look at the sales people at
Abercrombie, or Gap, or Aeropostale. They all look like their clients. All
the waiters at Red Robin are beautiful, skinny, young people. Just try to
get a job at Hooters if you don't fit their profile! I'm not defending any
of this, it's just the way things are.

Rather than complain about all this, just realize that life is not fair.
Understand it and develop strategies to succeed in spite of it. Bitching
about it will just turn you into a bitter, lonely person.

One can affect their own space. Because discrimination exist and we
have to put up with it, doesn't make it right or acceptable.

Defeatist attitudes get you nowhere. Make life better for others does
not result in becoming a bitter lonely person. Not attempting change
and whining about it is what causes bitterness. One should not blame
others for a situation until you have at least tried to change it.

And they should.

I personally don't *choose* to deal with obese salespeople.  Much in
the same way the gluttonous obese *choose* to shovel the food in their
face.

You make your choice, and I'll make mine.  If you're not chosen, don't
be surprised.

> I personally don't *choose* to deal with obese salespeople.

I know an obese estate agent.
He has become so large that he cant button his shirt anymore.

After his latest weight gain, his employer sacked him, because customers would
refuse to deal with him.
