I keep going in binges, exercising regularly for a while, and then
getting bored or lazy, and not moving for 4 months at a time, and
repeating pattern.

How do you stay motivated to do sports or exercise ?

cheers

Find an exercise that you enjoy.

Same here. When it became less fun, find a way to make it more fun
again.

In my case, I had to buy new skates for my nephew because his old
skates were hurting his feet. The skates I bought were much better
compared to his old skates or my own skates, so I suddenly found it
much harder to keep up and have a good time. I bought new skates, and
I am in heaven again. Now, we are outgrowing our old trail, so I did
some surfing on the web, and I found a website that lists trails for
skating, and tells what skill level is needed. We plan to try one of
the new trails next week.

If you have goals of improving, either by doing more, or doing
something better, then you can keep the enthusiasm by striving toward
those goals and then setting new goals. We like to time our skates to
see if we are improving. And we like to go farther.

Or find several exercises you enjoy and alternate between them. Or find a
workout partner. Or establish a regular workout "appointment." Or set goals
and measure your progress. Etc.

I second what Phil said, and must add that I try not to overdo my
exercise beyond the point of relative pleasure.

I agree with the suggestions to pick an exercise you like and stick with it.

Another way is to get involved with some charity sponsored walk/runs in your
area.  It's a great way to get some exercise and support one of your
favorite charities.  You might also look into some volunteer work with a
local park district.  I do volunteer bike patroling for the local park
district.  They also have positions for volunteers to lead walks, help kids
learn to play tennis, etc.  There are so many ways to include exercise and
have fun with it.

I don't particularly like running but I've set a goal of running a 5K and
have been working out on the treadmill this winter.  I'm not there yet but
it's been fun to see my progress over the past couple months.  Now if I can
just get over this sinus infection I might just be able to reach this goal
later this summer<g>

Signing up for a charity walk or run is the best motivator for me. I
signed up months ago and it kept me on track.  I am a real slacker when
it comes to exercise.  My first walk is May 1st, then a bike ride May
22.  It's getting closer.
All good things,

I go to a gym and i am a member of a karate club. The akrate club has
become a big part of my soical life. That makes it easy to go to karate.
I have got to like the gym, at long last. I have become semi-acquainted
with some poeple there, and I like it more now that I have goals for
improvement. I have also found I now miss the exercise when I don't go
for more than half a week. My body starts craving it.

So what works is: goals,  social stuff I shoudl add ebing outdoors  - i
am considering taking up rowing.

My goals are: another belt in klarate, more musle, feeling fitter,
bevcoming more agile/skilled in something. Martial arts have the
advantage that you can continue to learn and get better up to a very
high age (I know people in their seventies who practice it).

I hope there is something in here that would work for you.

Yes, I LOVE to be outdoors! So, my favs are running, skiing, walking,
hiking, backpacking, climbing and hopefully in the future,
mountaineering.

My boyfriend is heavily into kung fu san soo and T'ai Chi, so he's
teaching me T'ai Chi on our weekly hikes. It's a wonderful exercise and
meditation to do in a redwood forest or mountaintop.

Jake, what form of karate do you do?

I practice Wado Ryu. I am not familiar with the other types, so I don't
know what the differences between the various styles are. I just pcked a
clubn and a trainer that I liked.
