Hi All,
Well my weight shot right back up to 215 after 2 weeks of eating a lot of
fast food.  I was almost at 200, but I went right back to my bad habits.
I'm starting over again for the last time, I start the gym in a couple of
days and I'm cutting out the fast food.
I'm insulin resistant, so I'm trying to cut out a lot of carbs and sugar.
I'm trying to eat more meat, which is difficult for me since all I really
like is red meat and chicken.  I'm trying new things like salmon, steaks,
pork, etc.  I'm always the one who likes side items more than the meat!

Jenn, try to think what made you overeat for those 2 weeks. It is very
unhealthy to have such weight fluctuations. Does not do your body any
good.

Salmon needs to be cooked right to be tasty. Cook it in a way that
retains moisture and do not overcook. Check out electric grills at
walmart, they are excellent for fixing a quick delicious meal with
meat or pork or salmon. Not overcooking or undercooking is the
key. For that, you can buy a $2 meat thermoteter that you can leave in
the meat during cooking, for quick reading.

Cheap beef can be cooked for many hours in a crockpot, that way you
make the meat softer.

I think because it's that I've always been used to eating fast food, until I
hit 20.  When I hit 20 and moved away from home, I gained 50 pounds in a
short period of time.  I have what's called PCOS (polycystic ovarian
syndrome) and with it comes insulin resistance.  I was on Gluocphage for a
short period of time, now going to Metformin becaus eof the Gluc side
effects.  Not trying to list this as an excuse, just sort of a challenge to
lose weight.

My husband and I have started cooking salmon on our George Foreman grill.
We put it in low fat butter and garlic powder, then use the grill.  I never
tried salmon because of it's red color, but I'm finding it's the best
tasting fish to me!  :)

Sure, it makes things more difficult. After all, something made us
become fat at some point. Try weighing often and change your eating
soon enough if you notice devations from your course. If some food
makes you overeat, stay away from it.

salmon is a pretty fat fish, by itself, adding "low fat butter" to it
is not going to help you much.

It is very good fish unless you overcook it.

I do not own a crockpot, but I am considering buying one.

Forgot to mention that I think I misworded something in the first post.  My
highest weight was 230 and I got down to around 200, now I'm back up to 215
over time, not in 2 weeks.

I see. Well, if it took longer, it is less unhealthy. But still it is
good to maintain stable weight.

Glucophage is the brand name for metformin; they are the same drug. It
is one of the few currently prescribed diabetes medications that does
not have the side effect of weight gain.

Insulin resistant people should educate themselves on the glycemic
index (GI), which ranks foods by the effect they have on blood
glucose. In the New Year, I'll be making my review article on the GI
publicly available, but in the meantime a great place to educate
yourself is the University of Sydney's Glycemic Index site:

http://www.glycemicindex.com/

It also has a database of thousands of foods!

Good luck,

If you're trying to eat more protein, then you should be looking at eating
more beans and nuts.  Those will give you protein and fiber and healthier
fats than you'd find in meat.

Pardon my ignorance but is insulin resistance at all related
to diabetes?  Can you get a referral to a registered dietitian
that specializes in this problem?

Hi Patricia,
Yes it's related, in fact it's the stepping stone to diabetes.  So if I
don't get my act together soon it's goign to turn into diabetes.  My
grandfather has diabetes, so it's in my family.
My RE put me on the Zone diet, which is more balanced than Atkins.

The Zone diet is fine, as long as you follow it. That's the secret with a
way of eating, it will only work if you stick to it.

One of the hardest lessons I've learned in my weight loss is it's OK to
overeat for one meal and even one day, but I have to get back into the very
next day. I won't gain my 23 pounds back from one day's worth of over
eating, but I might for 20 days of over eating.

It is getting exciting - although I have fallen behind.  I NEED to
find someone to perform the service.  (yeah, yeah..  details,

Hey Jenn,
Hang in there, I just had a few weeks off where I went back to my old
eating habits, and it was difficult to pull out of it, but it's done.
Personally, I don't know if I'll ever be able to kick those bad habits
forever, but I do know that I can keep them to shorter and shorter
times, while having good habits longer and longer, and that will keep
me losing weight in the long run. It's not about being perfect all the
time, it's just being good more than being bad.
I like the side items too. :)

Jenn.
Best advice I can give is to get a food scale, weigh your portions - log
it on www.fitday.com
I personally still weigh every bite that goes into my mouth when I am
here at home (I work from home as well) But I have been known to stick
my little scale in my purse and take it with me when I go somewhere else
to eat. I have no shame in doing that anymore. If folks find that odd or
funny, Oh well.
Second best advice is to completely cut out the sugar and simple carbs.
It sucks the first week or so, but you will find that you don't want it
anymore after that. At least that has been my experience. I wont put so
much as even a peppermint in my mouth any longer. I refuse to go back to
those cravings and that way of life. A potato would send me over the
moon carb wise and I want to be healthy so bad that it's just not worth
it.

YMMV

Knowing your own demons must be half the battle, I think.

Don't give up, Jenn. The same thing happened to me. I started out at 222 and
lost 20 pounds or so, then shot right back up again--same thing, eating fast
food. I was living in LA, working 3 jobs, and the stress was killing me. I
had no time (or energy) to plan meals, plus my on-the-run schedule made it
difficult to transport healthy food. So I took the "easy" way out and hit
the fast-food places for lunch and dinner.

After making some serious revisions in my lifestyle, I was able to
successfully lose 80 pounds. It hasn't been easy, of course, but I feel so
much better. I can now wear a size 8 in clothes and I feel like a new woman,
healthy, etc.

I'm glad I didn't give up after that first slide.

You can do it!

Hugs, Cat
