Need Sugar Free Jello recipes

Gene - 15 Nov 2003 04:00 GMT I've been trying the Wal-Mart Sugar Free Jell-O knock-off stuff & really like it. The package says that it is 5 calories per serving, and 4 servings per package. So I eat them all, it's only 20 calories:-)
I use 1 cup of water, not the two they recommend.
A few minutes ago I got out the wife's little food blender thing & pulverized a whole package of tough carrots. I poured the warm Jell-O stuff over the ground-up carrots. It's in the fridge now. The warm stuff tasted pretty good. My plan is to use this as snacks to keep from getting too hungry. I dropped in a few raisins on one side to see if it can be anything close to a dessert. You can pretend that you are a dive bomber & drop in the raisins one at a time - but that's probably a guy thing.
If anyone has a recipe that uses this low calorie stuff, please post it. Thanks:-)

A logical place to start is www.jello.com
Susan Jones-Anderson - 15 Nov 2003 05:54 GMT Read your label on your raisins, I personally was very surprised at their high calories.

There is just something about the taste of eating a raisin/peanuts mix:-)
I tried the sugar free jello & smushed-up carrot thing a few minutes ago & it tastes just fine. I find that carrots are the most filling for snacks. I think this jello/carrot combo will be even better. I suspect that there are other such jello recipes that will have virtually no calories and be filling at the same time.
BTW - Nick (my grandson) shot a small deer within the first hour. A "really" nice old 10 or 12 pointer came by, but in our excitement, we bumped the .243 against the deer blind roof & spooked him. He slowly walked into the brush, Nick never got a shot. He can't wait to go again. He was so excited, it really was a great memories for both of us. The deer too, I guess.

It takes a real man to hide in a blind and kill a hungry, defenseles animal when it comes to feed.
Great job on teaching a youngster that it is ok to kill animals. You certainly would not want to teach him to observe and appreciate their beauty. No, be sure to teach him how to kill them.
I know that there is no justice in this world but if there were, the gates of hell would open up and take pieces of sh.t like you in.

Why do you think God put animals on this earth? To make movies like bambi? Not. Obviously you've never tried really good backstrap...

Just had to add to this and say that deer jerky is YUMMY! :)

I love beef too. And buffalo is a new favorite of mine. What can I say? I'm a carnivore at heart!
Gene - 15 Nov 2003 21:22 GMT This stuff is a winner for me!!!
I've eaten the first batch & can't believe how good it is. It's hard to believe, but if I had a complaint, it would be that it is "too sweet" - something that I never expected.
Try this:
1. Go to Wal-Mart & buy "TWO" packages of: Great Value - Strawberry Banana Low Calorie Gelatin Dessert. (5 calories per serving:-) The stuff costs something like a quarter a box, so get a bunch.
2. Go buy a package of the cheapest carrots you can find. Get the large kind with a lot of roughage - not those little sissy processes kind.
3. Clean the carrots (scrape & trim each end) then put the full package in a blender, food processor, etc. Whatever you have that will turn said bag of carrots into a mound of finely ground carrots. I made mine a little on the mushy side, and it worked fine. Put the ground-up carrots in a bowl that has room for a couple more cups of liquid.
4. Bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Put the "TWO" packages of Strawberry Banana into the hot water & stir to dissolve. "I know that the directions say add 4 cups of water total, but you lose the sweet taste - so only use 1 cup per package."
5. Pour the warm jello over the smushed carrots in the bowl. No need to stir.
6. Put the bowl in the fridge to cool.
7. Once it looks like jello is supposed to look - eat it all:-)
I'm not sure what the total calories, etc. are, but it can't be that bad. There are only 20 calories per box of jello - so add 40 calories to the bag of carrots ... (Carrots are, of course a Negative Calorie Food":-)
Conclusion: I can eat said raw carrots as snacks & not have the normal stomach cramps that I sometimes get when eating raw carrots from the fridge. Left overnight, the stuff tastes really sweet - like a dessert.
I'm sure that there are other concoctions like this out there, but other than my almost daily salty popcorn snack, I can't find any.

It's not my favorite, I like fruit better - but it tastes ok.

However, the fruit seemed to have too many calories. As it turns out, this carrot/jello mixture is REALLY sweet, and I suspect that the carrots have far fewer calories than the fruit we were using. I'm going to keep messing with it; kind of fun being an experimental scientist:-)

(5 calories per serving:-) The stuff > costs something like a quarter a box, so get a bunch. Or make your own flavors by using unflavored gelatin and adding your favorite flavors. Here's part of a column I wrote a decade ago. Depending on your dietary perspective, substitute sweeteners for sugar (I mention Equal in it, but I'd probably use 1/2 each, Equal and Splenda now.) or whatever else would work for you. The idea remains.
<<<<<<<< begin quote >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Gelatin comes in various forms but we're using the powdered, unflavored stuff you can get in the supermarkets and bulk food stores. We're going to make four flavors of gelatins from scratch: Lemon, Orange, Stupid-flavored juice drink gelatin and a very adult Wine gelatin. If you want more intense flavors, a teaspoon or two of readily available extracts will certainly do it. In it's simplest form, it may take 10 minutes to whip up a batch and it's hard to mess it up. Time out here for unflavored gelatin facts: * One packet weighs about 1/4 ounce and is a tablespoon. * One packet will gel from 1 3/4 to 2 1/2 cups liquid. * For molding and blocks, use less water so it's more solid. * To use, pour packet over cool liquid to soften and dissolve by adding boiling liquid, stirring until clear. Or, pour powder over cool water, let soak and microwave to near-boiling, stopping to stir until fully dissolved. * Calories - one packet runs around 30 calories. One cup sugar is about 770 calories. One packet artificial sweetener runs about 4 calories, and to my taste, Equal brand tastes best. Your call. You can substitute packets of artificial sweeteners for sugar but be aware that the total volume of dessert will be much reduced. A little trial and error here. For my taste, 8 packets of sweetener substituted for 1 cup sugar. That means a 2-cups-liquid, one-packet gelatin recipe can, in total calories, range from a low of about 80 calories (one packet, 8 packets sweetener, low-calorie liquids like lemon juice, flavored waters or extracts with water) to a high of over 900 calories (one packet, a cup sugar, sweet juices).
LEMON GELATIN Ingredients: 8 servings 2 packets or 2 tablespoons unflavored gelatin 1 cup cold water 2 1/2 cups boiling water 1 1/4 cups sugar or equivalent sweetener 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup lemon juice grated rind of 1 lemon Method: Pour the gelatin onto the cold water and let soften for a minute or two. Stir into the hot water to fully dissolve. Add remaining ingredients, pour into bowl or mold and chill for at least 3 hours until set.
ORANGE GELATIN Ingredients: 8 servings 2 packets or 2 tablespoons unflavored gelatin 1/2 cup cold water 1 cup boiling water 1 to 1 1/2 cup sugar or equivalent sweetener 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup lemon juice 3 cups orange juice or dietetic orange-flavored water grated rind of 1 orange Method: as above. Sugar varies depending on how sweet the juice is. Try the kind with pulp in it.
STUPID-FLAVORED JUICE DRINK GELATIN This will work with any fruit juice (except fresh pineapple which prevents jelling; canned will work), fruit juice drink, fake fruit juice drink or nowhere near fruit juice drink. Imagine a layered dessert that looked like this: fake blue raspberry, puzzling green Gatorade, purple Hawaiian Punch, store-brand white grape, mostly juice red grape juice cocktail, chemistry set pink lemonade and actual orange juice. Hey, hey. Watch the language. Ingredients: 8 servings 2 packets or 2 tablespoons unflavored gelatin 1/2 cup cold water 1 1/2 cups boiling water 1 cup sweetened fruit juice 2 tablespoons lemon juice sugar or sweetener cut up fruit (optional) Make a few strange layered desserts like these and you'll be the hit of the 9-year-old social set. They'll think you're most cool. And, yes, they're saying that again.
WINE GELATIN - FOR GROWNUPS This will still have alcohol in it and will make your ears get nice and warm. You might want to keep it away from the kids. The sweetness of the wine will determine how much sugar you'll want to put in. Taste as you go. Have a designated driver. I got the original recipe for this one in the 70's from friends named Tom and Vickie Powers who said it was an old Victorian secret recipe. Since she gave it to me and since she said it was Victorian, I named it Victoria's Secret. Oh, stop. It was well before I ever heard of them. Makes 8 servings 2 tablespoons gelatin 1/4 cup cold water 3/4 cup boiling water 1/2 cup or more sugar or equivalent sweetener 3/4 cup orange juice or dietetic orange-flavored water 6 tablespoons lemon juice (optional) 2 cups semi-dry or sweet wine grapes For interesting variations: make half the batch with red wine and half with white - fill wine glasses half full of one until lightly set, then add the other for a two-color dessert. Or, fill the glass halfway and let it set, drop in a grape and fill the rest of the way with gelatin mixture - the grape will appear to be suspended. Pretty. Serve with a nice dab of whipped cream. <<<<<<<<<< end quote >>>>>>>>
Extracts work wonderfully. You can make root beer or licorice or any other flavor for which you can find extracts. Chocolate.
And you can make fizzy ones. For an example, here's Diet Coke. Dissolve the packet of gelatin in a little Coke (like maybe 4 tablespoons, heated) until it's fully in solution. Chill (but don't freeze) the rest of the Coke in the freezer while the hot portion cools. When the hot Coke is room temp, stir it into the very cold Coke from the freezer. Chill to solidify. It will still have a little of that fizzy tingle that the soda has. Or substitute flavored carbonated waters or whatever you like.
The fizzy one can have other stuff incorporated, as well, but it needs to be very cold but not frozen. If you freeze the carrots or whatever, when they thaw, they'll "purge" liquids and mess up your pretty gelatin.
