Hi,

I have been reading this helpful newsgroup for awhile and appreciate it.
Can anyone tell me a good program to use to put my food intake into in order
to track calories?

I am 42 and started out at 232lbs August 18th,2003.  I recommitted again
after joining a gym August 2002 and never going.  I took beginning tennis in
Sept and Oct, and now continuing with the next level in November! It has
been much fun and has motivated me to loose!  I watch Denise Austin daily
(with the help of Tivo) and try to do her routine.  I am trying desparately
to cut back my food intake since August and getting honest about what I
truely do eat....pretty much snack all the time, at different times,
different foods....some of you may know what I mean.  Well today I have new
hope of finnally seeing some change!!!!!!!!!!!

As an aside I wonder if anyone here has tried "total Lean" from GNC.  I am
considering taking this drug to help.

Good luck and congratulations on wanting to be a better, healthier person.

If you start making gradual changes -- getting rid of junk food one
day, cutting sugar another day, starting to substantially exercise,
then giving up constant snacking, then controlling how much you eat in
total -- you will do well.

You are carrying about 60 lbs of extra fat on you, that's a pretty
heavy burden to carry around all the time.

You have to be honest with yourself, which means recording your weight
and knowing how much you eat and how much you exercise. Very
substantial exercise is an indispensable element of weight loss if you
want your health to be preserved. 30 minutes of walking per day is not
enough, even though it is better than nothing. 3 40 minutes tennis
classes per week is also not enough.

I can't believe that I sweat profusely with my tennis lessons while others
in the group are not.  I tend to think that this means that I am pushing my
heart rate up to where it needs to go....but I did increase it where I am
doing an "aerobic tennis workout" and have added more time...now doing
tennis two hours Tues, Wed, and Thurs.....the Denise Austin show I try and
do is the pilates part and weight stuff....I have to admit that I sit and
watch some too but like her spirit and information.

The FTC says Weight Watchers is a good program; it codes
calories as points.  Listen to the counselors and make sure
they tell you that this as a lifelong change because as you
can see from some recent postings, if you go back on the
healthy eating plan they try to teach, it will all come apart again.

Don't use supplements.  If they are following FTC rules, they
come with a disclaimer that the weight loss reported in their
testimonials is not typical.  They should also report that you
have to reduce calories and exercise, if they are being honest.

You are already doing that.  Save your money.

A lot of people here use fitday.com to log their food.  If you need or want
something that isn't internet based, I use DietPower.  It's not perfect, but
it does a lot.  You can download it from www.dietpower.com and use it for a
free trial period.  It logs food and exercise and allows you to create
recipes, add foods that aren't in their database, and tracks your weight and
nutrients. I like it because I can't always get on the Internet when I
travel.

Thanks so much! I will check it out!  I am so happy to see my weight under
230 for the 1st time in 5yrs!
Now I know if I start tracking my food intake it will go down faster.

Many in the group use www.fitday.com   It's free but you will need to
register.

I find it much easier to exercise when it's something fun.  I've only
played tennis a few times and it seems to be great exercise.

I was forced to play tennis as part of PE way back when in high school. The
only muscle I exercised to any degree was the one I used to bend over and pick
up the ball when it landed on the ground after I was unable to hit it....

I wish I were kidding. But I'm not.

When I was in school for my AA degree I had to take some PE classes as
part of the standard ciriculum for the comm college.

I took tennis one semester.   Had alot of fun.   And they taught it as
a beginners class.   Much different than what we had in highschool.
(highschool tennis was for the birds - as they might have been the
only ones to actually get the balls.  :)

The next semester I took Water Aerobics.   Now tha was an awesome
class.  :)

I attended a very small rural school and tennis was never offered.  The only
thing we did were volleyball, basketball, baseball and track.  I was in my
late twenties before I ventured onto a tennis court.  I think I could get to
like it but I've never taken the time for lessons.  Maybe in my retirement
years :)
