when there are SOOO many cravings for bad stuff!
Mary_Gordon@tvo.org - 27 Jun 2005 03:11 GMT
Well, if you could have just ONE cookie or one candy or whatever you
crave, it would be okay. Its when you inhale half the box that you are
in trouble. I can't keep those kind of things in the house, or they
call to me. I have three kids and you should have seen me last
Easter...omigod, all that chocolate in the house.
Mary....Mary....they'll never miss a few of those Lindt eggs...come get
one...or two....or three...and eat the ears off the bunny at the same
time!!

One thing that works for me is to keep low cal but high flavour stuff
like jars of pickles around or some spicy salsa, so if I just have to
have a snack I can have something with some taste bud snap.

Same here

I've tried buying those bags of candy.  You know the
small candy bars like you give out for Halloween?

But instead of just eating on or two when I have a
craving.   I just went nuts and eat the whole bag in a
few days!! <G>

I have to absolutely keep that stuff outta the house!
Its better for me to physically have to drive my car
and get a candy bar..... then keep it in the house.

I like how Oprah outs it. She said that she has to
treat carbs (sugar and chocolate) like a drug addict
must treat say heroin.  That is.... absolutely keep
away from it. To not eat any amt of it cause it will
only trigger craving for more

Would you all agree with this approach abt keeping it
completely out of the house?

For the most part, yes. The only exception that works for me is when I'm
having a gathering of folks over to eat; then they all have the foods that
are not so great for a person, and I can slip them the rest with doggie bags
out the door.

Keeping it out of the house is the only thing that works for me.  As the
commercial says, "Bet you can't eat just one."   If I don't start then I
don't have to make the decision to stop.  However, keeping stuff out of the
house isn't always an option.  Other family members may want the junk or
whatever you want to ban from the house.

However, when I am truly hungry, I can end up eating just about anything and
eating too much.  Even the so-called good stuff can cause weight gain.  I
even have to be careful to keep some things that are listed on my diet out
of the house.  Nuts are a problem for me, listed on the diet, but oh so
tempting to eat way too many.  And they are so loaded with calories.  I try
to avoid getting hungry by spreading my total food allowance throughout the
day, but sometimes nothing seems to work.

Keeping it out of the house is probably the best approach.  When I was
losing weight that's pretty much what I did.  Now that I'm in
maintenance I've been experimenting with keeping treats in the house
and moderating what I eat.  This seems to work pretty well for me.  My
excesses happen when I'm at restaurants and parties, and I sort of
allow myself to do it, but I still feel a bit guilty at times.  I've
been very good with the stuff at home, though.

You need to do what works for you.  If having it there makes you
overeat, banish it!

True enough.  I suppose if I didn't crave the bad stuff, I wouldn't
have gotten so fat in the first place!  Why does fried chicken have to
taste so darned good?  /sigh
