My department is going out for a birthday luncheon today.  The birthday
boy selected a Cuban restaurant for the celebration.  Given the choices
on this menu, what would you select?

http://www.cubaraleigh.com/menu_lunch.html

Ceviche?  The ceviche is described as: "Fresh sea scallops and shrimp
cooked in citrus and served on mixed greens with avocado, Cilantro and
plantain chips."  (skipping the plantain chips)

Ensalada de Pollo?  "a scoop of chunky chicken salad, stuffed into a
jumbo tomato served on mixed greens with cucumber, avocado and plantain
chip"  (again, skipping the plantain chips)

Do you have any other suggestions?  I was unable to find nutritional
information for anything similar to these items, do you have any
suggestions about what these items was count as (caloric content at the
very least)?  Thanks!

These sound great. Easy oin the avocado and skip the plantain as you
said.

I'd also consider the Black Bean Soup for which Cuba is noted and it is
very filling.

I would select something meaty, such as cerdo mojo, or a big piece of
fish such as salmon for $10.95.

Thanks for the response.  The Ropa Vieja seemed to get good reviews as
well.  Of course I will ask the folks that have birthday boy what he
recommends.  I just wanted to have a clue before going there so that I
can spend more time relaxing and enjoying the meal and less time
deciphering the menu.  I am not at all familiar with Cuban food.

Thanks!  This does sound like a good option.

I agree with Carol...the Ceviche sounds great.

I wouldn't be able to pass up the black bean soup.  It's always my
first choice for soup.  Panera Bread has a delicious black bean soup I
always order when I eat there.

Thanks for your response.  The black bean soup is an excellent idea.  I
have never had ceviche and I really thought that I was going to give it
a try but I found a review of the place and they said don't get the
ceviche ("But seviche is disappointing, yielding only a couple of
average citrus-marinated shrimp and three or four scallops on a glass
plate, with a smattering of avocado and cilantro.") from there so....

Usually I've seen ceviche as an appetizer rather than a main course,
so it's always been a small serving, and it sounds like this is no
exception.  It's very low calorie, but wouldn't be enough for a whole
meal.  Maybe that plus the black bean soup?

Very, very healthy. Basically, it's citrus juice on aw fish. the acids
from the juice cook the fish. very tasty. a classic recipe.

i would ask whther this comes with a dressding and if so, can they serve
it separately

I just might go with the pork stuffed with spinach.

Ceviche rules!  Not "cooked in citrus" but more pickled
in it.  The meat is never exposed to heat yet it comes
out cooked and that's more a pickling process.

Nice but it doesn't seem much different from what's
available at a lot of places.

> Do you have any other suggestions?

The shredded beef and pork sound okay but I'd ask what
veggies they come with.

I'd go with ceviche especially if I could see the portions
and it was neither too small nor too big.
