Since promising myself I'd really try the nutritionist's program as written,
I've lost 9 lbs! In 2 weeks. I know it will slow down, but in the meantime
I am floating on success. After vacation in August I printed a picture of
myself in which I looked heavier than I liked, with the words "Inspire
Yourself" on it. Since starting this re-committment, I've been putting
little sparkly stars on it for each pound lost. My elder son saw this this
morning and said "So, what, are you in pre-school now?" Hey - whatever
works. I get a kick out of peeling off and applying those stars. I
promised Tom that when I hit the 30 lb mark, since he is of course taking
all the credit for my loss, which in all honesty he is probably due since he
is the one that inspired me to do this, I would stand in the middle of the
gym and scream his name announcing that he was the best trainer in the
world. Knowing Tom, he will hold me to this...I am a little worried. Oh
yes, Chris told me that to read here and post regularly would help and I
agree with her. It has been of great help and support to read of others'
struggles with the same issues!
One other bizarre occurrance...my knees aren't hurting as much. I did one
other thing at the same time I started eating differently. I usually take
my shoes off upon hitting the house. But, I decided one day, since I knew
I'd be on my feet a lot painting, to leave them on and noticed at the end of
the day, my knees hurt less. I don't know if it's less fluid, the impact
absorbtion or the support of the inserts I use. Plus, we are working more
and more on stretching my tendons and ligaments out for a deeper squat.
Maybe it's all of those. All I know, I finished two days relatively pain
free and couldn't help but think to myself that now I knew how other people
felt when they were moving around. It is very nice not to have my knees on
fire!

Hi Elise,
Great job! Regarding your knees... do you have tile floors? I do, and my
legs/knees hurt by the end of the day after walking around here. I have to
wear slippers....

Congratulations on the 9lbs - this is fantastic.
Glad to hear the knees are improving. I imagine it's a combination of
everything you've done - weight loss, exercise and keeping the shoes on in
the house. My knees don't bother me but my arches object to my going
barefoot after an hour or so.
BTW - I love the picture and star idea.

Outstanding, Elise! You're really on the right path now! And I'm so
glad your knees are feeling better.
Yeah, Tom might hold you to it :-). (Tom is probably the most
uninhibited person I have ever met.)

I understand completely! I think it's a great idea, by the way.
I put a Body for Life Calendar up on my kitchen wall and put sharpie magic
marker crosses across days where I worked out and stars on the days when I
did an especially good job of sticking to my eating plan. Hokey? Maybe,
but constant visual accountability is another way to look at it. :-)

Ouch. I promised myself I would get a deep tissue massage. I like my
methods better!

This is like the dirty little secret of knee surgery. My son's 300 pound
teacher is out this semester having her knees replaced because "it's bone
on bone". But the reality is that we've *all* got some cartiledge loss
and it just plain HURTS LESS if you lose weight. It's like doing plastic
surgery to remove facial wrinkles while still smoking. It's pissing into
the wind to fix your knees and not lose weight. But there just isn't a
way to tell a fat person this. (My mother mentioned this summer that she
wants to get a scooter to help her with her knee pain - she's already done
the surgeries and they still hurt. And she weighs about 275.)
My knee pain is gone. Not "improved", not "manageable", but GONE.

I have a piece of graph paper in a plastic folder right above my computer. I
mark my weight on it weekly. In the short time I've been doing this I've had
two seperate weeks stalled followed by little whooshes (I love that word!) but
when I look at the graph I see an overall downward trend. I look at it a lot :)

This can be done at www.fitday.com, too. They'll even let you measure in
kg or stone, as I recall. :-)

I'm an old fashioned girl - I like to see it whenever I look up from my screen.
I also have it replicated in my diary - I find it motivational.

I also found that my various pains were all gone with the weight and
achieving a level of fitness. The only thing that hurts now are my
occasional sports injuries, like my stupid hip flexor that seized again
during my race last week and in spite of religious stretching hasn't let go
yet. As you develop your muscles and strengthen them it really takes stress
off of the joints.

That is a GREAT!!! idea wendy! :) I think I'll try that one. I can hang it
up in my bedroom and it will stare me in the face every morning.

Very cool Elise! I love it when you make a plan, a commitment and it WORKS!
(btw - my poor puter is in the shop and I'm using a loaner, so if this looks
odd don't fret)

Congrats! Re: stars - one suggestion I heard was to fill gallon milk
jugs with water equal to the weight you've lost. A gallon is 8 pounds
of water, so you'd get over a gallon.
