Anyone else try Boca meatless burgers? I had one this evening and was
not impressed. Maybe they are better grilled? I followed the microwave
directions. They are low in calories (70) and fat and high in protein
but just don't taste very good. I also bought the chicken patties but I
haven't tried them yet. Hmmm.........trying to decide what to do with
the rest of the box.

I like them better with a couple of slices of melted fat-free cheese
and some catsup, but I prefer burgers made of ground turkey or
chicken.  There are some flavored veggie burgers that are pretty good.
I particularly liked some mushroom ones I bought at Trader Joe's once,
but then I couldn't find them again when I looked.

Anytime I eat one of the meatless burgers, I pile on the veggies and
condiments, mustard, pickles, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and lots of black
pepper.  I haven't tried grilling one.

I don't care for them microwaved.  I heat them in a non-stick pan with a
spritz of olive oil or on the grill (also spritzed with olive oil.  I don't
eat the chicken patties so I can't tell you what those are like.  The only
meatless "chicken" I like is Smart Menu chicken strips.

I tried them a long time ago and found them unattractive also. Perhaps
if you look for high protein, low fat food, you can try chicken breast...

I'll have to give them one more shot grilled, with lots of
condiments/lettuce/tomato. They are much quicker and easier than
preparing a turkey or beef burger and come in single serving packages
and that's handy. Also, soy protein is supposed to be very good for you.
I'm just getting a little tired of chicken breast and other meat so I
was looking for an alternative.
I think I'll try the black bean burgers. Black beans have better flavor
than soy, IMO. I have also heard of making a hamburger with half beef,
half black beans.....any one tried this?

I haven't tried the black beans and hamburger but I do make hummus with
black beans.  I make a wrap using a whole wheat tortilla, spring greens,
diced cucumbers, tomatoes and the hummus spread.

I haven't tried their plain variety but do like their cheeseburger type.  I
eat them quite often on whole wheat bread with a slice of onion and spicy
mustard.  It's one of my favorite quick meals.

I also like Morningstars spicy black bean burgers.

What brand of fat-free cheese do you use?

I like Kraft Free shredded cheddar.

Sorry -- just saw this.  When I was away I was reading the group with
Google Groups and I miss stuff with it all the time.  Anyway, the only
kinds readily available around here are Kraft & Bordens.  I prefer
Kraft but will use Bordens if it's all I can find.  Neither is too
exciting, really, but I like them anyway :-).

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I had no idea there were so many
meatless products with so many different flavors. I'll have to look and
see if there is something else that I could try that looks appetizing.
The breakfast sausages sound good.

I still haven't gotten around to grilling so Boca burger yet. I'll have
to try it this weekend.

DH loves the breakfast sausage -- both the links and the patties.

I didn't plant any tomatoes this year so I haven't had easy access to
them.  I get a few from co-workers who bring in the surplus but those
never seem to make it home<g>

Beverly - who eats them as an afternoon snack.

I usually toast a slice of bread, with the cheese, then add ketchup or
light mayo, and microwave the burger.

I actually kind of like them.  I prefer turkey burgers at the moment
though. I like to have the Boca Burgers or the Morningstar Farms Spicy
Black Bean burgers on hand for something quicker/less messy than turkey
burgers or beef hamburgers though.

i think the best thing to do is follow a recipe for some kind of black
bean and vegetable burgers, make a good amount of them and then freeze
them. it's both cheaper and healthier in the long run-- boca burgers
are still a processed, frozen food, you know? they are definitely
better grilled though so try it before you throw out the box. spice it
up with chili powder and stuff, then grill it and top it with cheese,
ketchup, mayo, mustard, etc. put it on good-flavored bread (i could
never eat one of those things by itself! since the burger has so many
complex carbs then some kind of ciabatta or something might enhance
flavors).

Original Grillers (Morningstar Farms), are MUCH MUCH better.  Try them
next time.

Chula,

I wasn't 100% sure what you were replying to -- just to clarify, you
like the Morningstar Farms original better than the Boca original?

I haven't tried the Morningstar Farms Original Grillers, but I have
tried their veggie corn dogs.  I thought they were pretty good.  I ate
half a package, then put the rest in the freezer.  Then my husband tried
the other two a little later.  He liked them also, though he was pretty
surprised when I told him they were meat free after he had eaten them.

The Morningstar product I love the best are the breakfast links. But I
have to be careful, because I can eat more than one serving. :)

I feel the same way about Boca Burgers, but my best friend loves them.
I like Gardenburgers better.

I think they're delicious! I have them once in a while when I'm in the
mood for a burger. I grill them with a quick spray of veg oil.

Sorry for the lateness in my reply (I've been busy) but I find the
roasted onion boca burgers very enjoyable. I eat them bunless.
I eat them in place of red meat which I have given up due to
inflammation.

Wendy,

Yes!!  I have eaten the almost every product Boca and Mornng Star Farms put
out, including the BBQ Ribs, which are delicious, by the way.  Do not follow
the directions for preparing the uncooked products.  The best way to prepare
the burgers are to fry them in a little olive oil.  I saute onions, green
peppers and mushrooms (adante); meaning that they are still a little crunchy
but not raw.  I make my burger, adding my tomatoes, Romaine lettuce, onions,
peppers and mushrooms.  This is beyond delicious and better than any meat
burger you ever ate.

Prepare the chicken patties in the oven on a piece of foil or a non-stick
cookie sheet.  You can, also, cut the patties in cubes or strips, saute them
in a little olive oil and make chicken stir fry.  You can use the strips to
add to top off a rice dish or add to a salad (fry the stips first).

If you want more ideas, just reply to this thread and my email will notify me.
There are numerous vegetarian dishes you can make.  You can, also, make your
own burger patties.  Quite frankly, the homemade ones are better than boca!!

I have lost 44 lbs by changing my lifestyle, including diet and exercise.  I
am always interested in a more healthy approach to life.  So, if you have
anything to share, please do.
