I've switched from bulking (muscle growth) mode to cutting mode this week,
and it sucks.  When you get used to eating at an 1800 calorie level, then
drop back to 1300, there's not much margin for error - you pretty much have
to make every bite count towards daily nutritional needs.  I'm struggling
with the reduced calories, and I'm having to retrain myself after only 3
months of being off "weight loss mode".  It's hard!  And I've been
constipated beyond belief, which isn't helping, despite constant water
intake and high fiber diet.  And now, to make matters worse, I started my
period today!  Wait a second...  I'm not supposed to have a period, I'm on
depo.  But when was my last shot?  duh, not since July.  So, in all my
efforts to start losing weight again, I think I'm actually up about 4 lbs
today.  And I'm leaving on Friday for a week long vacation, so I might as
well just screw it until I get back...

It's hard to be on 1300 calories. Why did you switch from weight loss
mode to bulking up mode and then back to "cutting" mode?

Can you try to find some middle ground, such as eating 1700 calories
and spending 200 calories per day on some easy exercise activity.

Anyways, yes, cutting on food is difficult sometimes!

I'll respond for Determined.   The weight loss mode - loses some
muscle.   The goal of the bulking phase for both myself and
determined, was to build muscle (and at the same time we have noticed
some fat loss or fat re-adjustment).   Then you do another cutting
phase to lose fat again.

The end result is having the same measurements but being about 10lbs
heavier.  Which also means a slightly higher metabolism, and makes it
easier to maintain a steady weight without feeling deprived.

Consider this - both Det and I are about 5'3" tall and try to keep our
weight less than 130lbs.  At that rate - for an average person, your
BMR is only about 1300/day, 1800 w/ exercise.    That is easily
consumed and can leave you feeling deprived as you MUST watch portion
control all the time.

The extra 10lbs and continued activity levels can bring your daily
maintenance calories up to about 2000+ if you are lucky.  Those extra
few hundred cals that you make up from increased muscle mass and
exercise can really make a difference in how you eat.

When you lose fat, you lose some muscle.  Then, when you gain muscle, you
gain some fat.  The ratio depends on how carefully you eat and exercise.
The goal is to maximize fat loss and minimize muscle loss during a cutting
phase, and to maximize muscle gain and minimize fat gain during a bulking
phase.  You cycle between the two until you reach the body comp you are
looking for.

I see. Anyway, it is a lot easier to maintain weight if you spend a
few hundred calories per day. This way you can get away with eating
more and feel less deprived.

I'm 5 ft 3 inches. Left on my own recoginicance, I find it hard to eat as much
as, or more than, 1200 to 1400 calories unless I'm like really on a
go-out-to-dinner mode. I'm slowly losing weight on maintenance, and I'm
beginning to preceive this could conceivably become a problem. So very much
depends on the size you are, how active you are, and how much you really *want*
to eat.

Then you shouldn't be doing it.  You should be doing something
you don't have to switch on and off of, that you can keep up
with for the rest of your life and be healthy on.  If it's this
much trouble, you're doing something wrong.
