Hello list,

I'm wondering if any of you out there know of any good online weight loss
support groups out there?  If so please reply back, so I can view them.  I'm
a 39-year-old male that was in an accident almost 2.5 years ago and was
overweight at the time of the accident.  About 3 months ago I had visited my
doctor to get tested for diabetes and to find out options for losing weight.

Luckily I didn't have diabetes.  My insurance doesn't cover weight loss
prescriptions.  My doctor said I was a candidate for the gastric bypass
surgery, but I really wanted to try getting help with a dietician or
something more before making a permanent change to my body.  I'm glad I did,
I asked my doctor if he could recommend a dietician to try learning how to
eat better.

It's been about 3 months now and I've lost around 48 pounds and plan on
losing another 52 to 77 pounds.  I don't measure my food anymore, but know
about what portions to eat and I haven't had a burger or any fries since I
started my diet.  I told myself this isn't a diet anymore it's a way of
life.

Today, I'm feeling better about myself and look forward to losing the
remainder of my weight.  I have never really understood all the calorie,
carbs, and other things that you need to watch in order to make sure your
getting the proper amounts in a diet.

I'm hoping to find site where I can learn more from others and share their
joy in weight loss and better living.

Thanks for any links you can provide,

Paul

I have two questions.

1. What is your weight and height

2. What is the nature of your injury and what kind of exercise can you
perform.

I lost 47 lbs without needing any prescriptions or any help from my
health insurance. Did so by giving up junk food and sugar, walking and
eating less.

Most outstanding!

If you are losing weight, feeling good, and eat a varied diet, you are
on the right track. After weight loss, continue doing everything as
during weight loss, but eat a little more.

Hello,

Just to answer your questions I am currently 250lbs and 5'11".  I plan on
getting down to 200 w/o much difficulty and have a hopeful goal to reach
175.  I have always believed that this was impossible because I believe I've
been 200+ since my early high school days and they say it gets harder with
age.

Even serving in the Army and then Marines I was always looked at with a
weight problem even though I could carry my own weight and run faster than
some, that 10 years my junior.  As you can imagine you burn a lot of
calories in the military and that required a hearty appetite, at least
that's my feeling.

After my accident I gained an additional 40 pounds, due to laying in bed
and sitting in the chair recuperating.  Now I can't run, but walk 2.5 to 3.5
miles at least 5 days a week and I have a stairmaster in my home which
doesn't require you bend the knees all the way and I spend an hour a day at
least 5 days a week on it and think it's a major reason for my weight loss
as well as changing my eating habits.

Thanks to all for the reply's.  Just found this group yesterday and
realize this is a support group in itself.

Kudos to all with a successful weight loss,

Paul

I see. I am also 5'11", amusingly.

I also was overweight since childhood, but not by much. Then my weight
ballooned after I got married, from 200 to 223 lbs.

It is harder, but achieving reasonable weight (175 may be reasonable
for you) is possible. I am 176 at this point and still have quite a
bit of fat on me.

Absolutely.

Well, that's excellent that you can walk a few miles per day. It won't
be a magic solution, but it will be helpful.

Good luck, hang around!

Welcome to ASD, Paul.  I think you'll find lots of information and support
in the group.

Congratulations on the 48lbs - that is fantastic.

www.fitday.com is a site many of us use to log our daily calorie intake.  It
will list the carbs/protein/fat ratio for you and provide other useful
information.  It's free but you have to register.

Hope to see you posting often.

Wow!  Good work!

Actually, I have found this group to be informative and supportive --
although there are some personality conflicts from time to time.  It's
good to have a people with a mix of backgrounds using different
techniques to maintain their weight because there are a lot of ideas
floating around within the newsgroup.
