The past experience with weight loss wonder drugs has been relatively
uniform.

1. Most just do not work and represent snake oil.

2. The ones that do work carry certain risks, for example fen/phen.

3. The people who successfully lose weght and keep it off are those
who do it without drugs and who continue substantial exercise (if my
memory serves me right, 2800 calories/week on average). This is
according to the studies done on NWLR (national weight control
registry).

This may be a result of self selection and not causation. That is,
"strong" people may lose weight the old fashioned way and they keep it
off because they are strong. The "weak" people try one drug after
another and they cannot keep the weight off.

There is no secret to weight loss for most people. If you drop junk
food, start exercising substantially and somewhat curtail how much you
eat, you lose weight. The trick is to find a diet where a caloric
deficit is palatable _to you_. It has been reported that on some diets
you can eat more calories than in others, but it does not invalidate
my basic message -- you still have to cut on food (maybe certain
kinds) and exercise and eat better.

There is no way around the fact that you need to spend efforts on your
weight loss and being in shape. If you want to lose weight while
gorging on ice cream and watching TV, you will be in a very sorry
shape.

Hurrah.  Sometimes this ng gets too much involved with the latest fad or
drug.  I can't agree with you more.  I have tried some of the quickie fads
over my lifetime, and I find what I am doing now works...slowly, but it
works. And, believe me, I am NOT one of those people who loses weight
easily.  I have found further that, when I quit keeping track on paper (or
my pda) and give myself "permission" to "let up a little" I get "zapped."
Like diabetics or anyone else with a chronic condition related to our food
intake, we have to do this for life.  Just get used to it.  We are NOT among
those lucky few who can chow down on whatever and however much they like.
It really is a matter of acknowledging that.

Excuse me, didn't you read the thread just above you on this newsgroup?
Or are you a spammer who thinks that because it was discussed, you
can cash in on it.

Your choice.  Troll or spammer.
