Hi everyone,
I am a 23 year old female who wants to lose 20 pounds. I started the
south beach diet 5 days ago, thats Friday Sept 16th. I've been very
careful with the diet and have not cheated and have been making my
meals using the recipes in the book for phase 1. I dont seem to be
losing hardly any weight though. Today is the morning of my 5th day on
the diet and I weighed myself, only down 1 pound. Its really
frustrating! I spent so much money grocery shopping for this new diet
and have been satisfied with the meals and food, not starving like on
most diets. I want to make this one work for me! What could I be doing
wrong?? Thank you for your help!

I am not sure why you think that you have a problem. You lost 1 lb in
5 days. That's not yet enough to make many conclusions, but it is a
move in your desired direction. If you, hypothetically, continue to
lose at this rate, you would lose 20 lbs in 100 days.

With relatively little weight to lose, you would not be experiencing
very rapid weight loss on a diet like you adopted. And there is no
reason to be in a hurry.

As far as spending money, there is plenty of cheap foods that are
allowed on your diet.

I think the South Bean diet book encourages people to believe they will
experience a sharp drop in weight the first week or so on the diet,
when they're in the first phase, which restricts carbs radically.
Perhaps most people do.  But I agree that the OP is going to lose more
slowly as she has relatively little weight to lose.  (And she hasn't
said how much she weighs now or anything.  For all we know, she could
be of relatively normal weight and wanting to become extremely thin.
That makes it even harder.)

To Erin: I don't know to what extent South Beach requires that you
limit your consumption of the "allowed" foods.  But -- no matter if you
cut out carbs, sugars, or whatever -- your weight loss is ultimately a
function of how much you consume.  You may be simply eating close to a
maintenance level of calories, so that despite dropping carbs your body
isn't really dropping much weight.  (Yeah, it's great not to be hungry
:-).  But that may be related to the slower weight loss.  And anyway, a
pound every five days will still get you where you want to be.  I lost
130 pounds at about that rate of loss.

Thank you everyone for your quick responses. I guess I had expected to
lose more as everywhere I read it says you should lose between 8-13
pounds in the 2 weeks. I am 5' 9" and currently 161 pounds. I would
like to be 140.  Perhaps I am eating too much, I keep reading in the
south beach book a basic theme of "There are no requirements for
portion control, eat until you feel full" and "If you want to snack, go
on ahead, it is encouraged". I think perhaps I should cut back a bit.
Thanks again,
Erin

That would be a normal thing to happen to very fat people, but not to
a slim person like you.

In fact, there is no guarantee that you would lose 20 lbs without
consciously limiting how much you eat. Chances are that you would not.

For example, I am slightly plumper than you (5'11", 174 lbs), I am
eating a low carb diet and I am not losing any weight. (I am aware
that South Beach diet author does not want to call it low carb, blah
blah, but it is still a lower carb diet that promises weight loss
without restricting quantity) That I am not losing is fine with me,
since I have no further weight loss plans.

> I am 5' 9" and currently 161 pounds. I would like to be 140.

That would make you very slim.

Your case is not the case of a typical fat/obese person who ate with
abandon and then adopts a better diet and loses weight.

Quite possibly, you will have to make an effort to "eat less" to lose
more.

Exercise could help a little bit, also.

You may also find that losing that 20 lbs involves a very substantial
effort to accomplish it and to maintain the loss, and it is worthwhile
to reassess, at some point, whether it is truly worth it.

It sounds like you are already a reasonable weight making it difficult
to take of weight quickly.  People who are extremely overweight lose it
very quickly at the beginning, but almost everybody struggles with
those last 20 pounds or so!

Try to eat a little bit less, that could work!  Are you doing any
exercise now?  If not you might want to throw some in... Basically, no
matter the diet, if you burn off more calories then you consume, then
you should lose weight!

At 5' 9", 161 lbs, and 23 years old, your Body Mass Index is 23.8 (in the
Normal Range), and you are in the 53rd percentile for weight (i.e., just
slightly over the US average for 5' 9", 23 year old women).

Losing 20 lbs would result in a Body Mass Index of 20.8, and you would be in
the 31st weight percentile.

Given that you're already in the healthy range for weight, your goal weight
is feasible, but it will take dedication and patience to get there.  You'll
need to cut some things from your diet (e.g., all sugared sodas is a good
place to start), and regular vigorous exercise can also help (running,
cycling, etc.).

It's easiest, and best, if you lose the weight slowly - taking a year to
lose those 20 lbs would be a reasonable goal.

Best of luck.

For health and metabolic reasons, you should try *NOT* to lose any
more than 1.5 lbs a week.

Erin, listen to me. I just put my first posting. (big loser) You MUST give
your self TIME!!!! I gave myself a full year..you have to have iron
determination, and be willing to do it SLOWLY. I lost 160 pounds in around
ten months. I was a monstor fat guy (335) and NEVER thought I could EVER lose
weight, but I did it on my own. I was made fun of my folks around heer (the
"he is on drugs" or "He has AIDS" comments) I ignored all that, and did my
thing, and now folks sotp me daily wanting to know my SECRET. Erin there are
THREE THINGS you must do NOW : 1) change you eating habits forever. 2) begin
a cardio program 3) begin a wieght lifting program.  Doing those three things,
in the RIGHT balance saved my life.  O lmpw it sounds over-whelmin,g but if
you want, I can give more specifics if you, and anyone else want s to hear
how I did it.

I applaud you for wanting to lose 20 pounds, but remember, once you lose it,
you have to continue your new lifestyle for the rest of your life, or it will
come right back....that is a given.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I cannot see taking a year to
lose 20 pounds, I've lost that much in 6 weeks before.  I was heavier,
I lost about 15 pounds over the course of about a month around May.
Kept it off with no problems, but am still working on these last 20.
Its kind of surprising to think that 5' 9" 160 is considered to be
fairly slim and 140 to be very slim. I mean goodness, Nichole Kidman
for example is 5' 11" and only weighs a reported 115 pounds and
everyone thinks shes got the most amazing body, people never say shes
too skinny. They were talking about different celebritys in this
magazine I have, and a doctor was giving his opinions about their
weight. He said she would like to see her at 125. Thats 15 pounds less
that what I want to get at and shes 2" taller! That seems awfully thin.
I was also watching Americas Next top model one season and this girl
was like my height, and 139 and they were all concered that she would
have to be a plus sized model. I mean...jeez!  Hmmm....

Well, I think that she is skinny. She has a nice face, but otherwise
is unattractive.

I am not sure what you are trying to say. Would you be at healthy
weight at 140? Most likely, yes. Is it going to be easy to get to 140?
No one knows, but example of Nicole Kidman is not going to help you
answer that question. It may be hard for her to stay that slim, also,
but she has a lot of $$ at stake. Is it worth it to be so slim, for
you? It depends on what you want from life and on how hard it is to
get to 140.

If you want to lose weight quickly, at this point, your only answer is
to eat substantially less. If your new diet makes you eat a lot less,
you will lose quickly, if not, you need to limit your eating somehow.

There is no weight loss miracles, you need to eat less than you spend,
in calories, to lose weight. If your diet makes it happen, great.

The camera adds weight so models and actresses are often below
insurance tables for weight.

Each of us except those with serius psychological image problems have
to reach a level of acceptance about a weight where  they look and feel
best. For me it is less than now, but because I am old, although my
body looks best in the mid 130's, my face fares better at 140.

With so much going on in the world it seems unimportant to be that self
absorbed.

Completely OT: I enjoyed Martha's debut episode of her "Apprentice."
Talk about organized and multi facted!

Yes, and I think she *is* too thin. I didn't know her, but I googled for
her just now, and see for example http://tinyurl.com/7a9j9

I just read today in some magazine that even Kidman herself thinks she's too
thin.  Using movie stars and celebrities as guideposts for weight is
unrealistic.  Many of them use extreme measures to maintain their weights
and some let their weight fluctuate 20-30 lbs on a regular basis, slimming
down for movies. If you think you need to look thinner I would suggest
trying to add some muscle.  It will give you a slimmer, sleeker look and you
will be more healthy (think Jennifer Garner)and you might even go down a
size or more in clothing without the scale changing all that much.  The
thing is, it takes quite a bit of time.

Listen closely, now.

"Nicole Kidman is way too skinny."

Should I say it louder? The woman is frightfully thin. I saw a photo of
her in a bathing suit and I was afraid of getting poked by bones. She
looks good in draped clothing, plus, we are of course seeing her in
photos or films with make-up and cameras adding weight and so on.
She is unhealthfully thin for herself and even for her own elongated
body type. Her body type is very unusual, which is why models, etc., get
paid so much for having it. Maybe 10% of the female population is long
and thin to begin with.

You cannot possibly look at celebrities for any kind of physical
inspiration or guidance. They are in a very different world, and they
are paid well to do unhealthy things.

I agree she's unattractively skinny.  I'm not an authority on sexual
attractiveness of women, but if I were inclined that way I'd go for
someone more along the lines of Beyonce, I think.
